HORRENDOUS NEW BUILD ELECTRICAL WORK? What is going on in New Build???

We find another awful New Build electrical installation with a Niglon Dual Type A split load dual row consumer unit. EV and PV running through it, no grommet strip, CU not screwed to the wall correctly, 2way light switches with no intermediates, MCBs not sat in the busbar, overheated RCD and more.
Fixed with a CPfuse box dual row RCBO board along with a Myenergi Eddi to go alongside some existing solar panels and battery storage.

Its all about the money price work on sites basically killed off the high standards that used to be used. Not just on the electrical side either all trades are dropping standards to earn more money.

Nice work mark , but this is becoming a familiar thing on new builds . Shoddy work I’ve going loose terminals , lamp holders with one screw , poor terminations . Etc etc. it’s all about speed and money , plus contractors.pass work around to who knows who ? I went to a house last week ( 1970s ) wiring yes it was a lot better than some today ( the work ).. glad I retire in august ..

9:00 I don't understand why standards even allow breaker terminals that can close with cables or busbar on the wrong side of the clamp - it's not rocket science to add a leaf to the clamp to prevent this

Standards are shocking iv being doing some condition reports on property's under two year old and getting things like wrong size cable for rings and cookers and showers in property with reference method 101 to 103. You can only expect lack of knowledge tbh quality should be number one priority not be negotiated due to price if they don't want a good job then don't do it at all the industry would soon pick its game up and pay whats needed cheers for the content and keep the interest going

I can’t remember where the article was but it said most of the people never second fix their work they might just do first fix for £190 per house and if they can smash them out they get a bonus then on to another site They need to do proper snagging and quality control If you bought a car or van with faults like that you would be able to send it back if they couldn’t fix it If the responsibility was on the house builder and not the electrician and cps they would be more interested in selling houses fit for purpose KRT electrical services has just bought a new build and found some lovely wiring Sorry it’s so long 😃

Good job Mark and crew, I use a cordless Milwaukee screwdriver or a Mikita cordless screwdriver for repetitive chores of screwdriving, the Milwaukee is really good and has taken 120 volts by accident of course and still works, it is 2.4 volts and last long time. The Mikita is 7.5 volts and comes with two batteries and has a build in light and is a little pricey, but has more features, it is 180 in price and the Milwaukee is a little over 100, but is reliable. one battery, one charger, Good job again.

Interesting video Mark, Thank You. I know that the original sparks has to earn a living etc but some of those faults i.e. the loose busbar connections are a danger to life. I would have been interested in the isolation procedure of the battery banks etc. Maybe on a future video.

Hi Mark, I noticed you were using blanks pushed in from the outside on the DB, I have used FuseBox Blank Module Single Pole Din Rail Mountable which allows you to leave the busbar at maximum length unused sections of the busbar are covered by the blanks leaving room for future expansion. Regards from Ray in North Wales.

You're 100% correct, all aspects of new builds are lacking compared to those built pre 2000, the people running the companies set ridiculous project goals and it's the trades people who end up taking the blame as the general public see the trader as the one who cut corners to "turn a profit" that those on site will never see

@@geraldelwood9660 in a domestic setting with good division of circuits these can be really useful. But 100% for say office or kitchen ccts with white goods leaking up to 3.5mA not suitable. All in the design I suppose.

I just put one of these boards in my fathers house. As he's still an engineer and likes to tinker with faulty items at home he kept blowing the RCD on the split load board he installed in 2001 much to his wife's annoyance. First time I've used the double stack, really nice board but wish you could swap the main switch to the bottom but the fly leads to the extension aren't long enough. Only complaint but it would of allowed for much easier dressing of cable as all the high loads are on the bottom due to the length of wire he had at the time. I need a new ident kit though as the one I was getting on Amazon isn't available anymore, any recommendations Mark?
@electrician247

Hi Effer Vescence(only got it now!!) if you really want to do that, purchase a din rail connecter same current rating and dimensions for a 16 mm cable run the main power to that connector and run a jumper to the main breaker at the bottom as you wish. takes up a bit of space, but will meet all standards.
@etch9
@etch9 2 года назад
Recently used one of these boards and found when I torqued up the busbar the RCBOs would twist and then end up not sitting straight just wondering if you had the same thing just something that annoyed me after trying to make the board look as neat as possible maybe just be fussy
@electrician247
@electrician247 2 года назад
This annoys me on lots of boards. I've found best way to avoid it is start on the right and work left. Making sure the first rcbo is dead straight. Hold the next one on it during tightening. Not ideal but works.

called out to a new build (by the customers insurance) to a light fault in may 22, built by a large hose builder cert date feb 22, found the light to be tripping due to line cable on switch been trapped by the back box lug, took the lid of the consumer unit, found all cables running through the back, no grommit strip (bare edge,) tails running through one side earth the other ac rcds and excessive holes with no seal at the back of the board (stud wall) and excessive holes above the lights, the customer also informed us, we were the 2nd spark to attend due to other faults, when will someone goverment/ cps schemes get a grip on all the industry not just new builds

Loads of room to see on the dual row boards that is for sure

@@electrician247 my only real gripe with hager dual stack boards is not being able to see if the tail that feeds the top rail is connected properly into the main switch with the busbar. There's no real room to get the old inspection mirror in to check. I shoulf really try a fusebox CU soon. Nice content by the way bud.

Why doesnt CP electronics install a second busbar for the neutrals as SBS boards do? it would make those fly leads redundant overnight.

There's only one person allowed to make money in the building trade and that's the builder. That aside, I blame the governing bodies, they should be clamping down on this crap. I also blame the electrician's, because they are as thick as shit, they spend a fortune on tools, test equipment, books courses etc, then sell themselves cheaply, I am not keen on plumbers, but I will say one thing about them, they know how to charge and they are all the same.

@@electrician247 that's true, I have worked on many new build sites including persimmon, redrow, wimpey and many more and the electrician was one of the lowest paid and that's because these electrical firms are buying the work. Issue is not enough time to do things correctly . Inexperienced blokes teaching new apprentices incorrect practices. And a barely meeting the regs approach instead of taking pride in the job all new builds are a make it look nice from the outside sham.
@edc1569

Seems pretty decent for a new build. Since the government did nothing of any significance to fix the building industry after Grenfell, it's entirely wishful thinking that you think they give a monkeys about some domestic wiring issues. I used to work for London Underground, everything changed after the Kings Cross fire, and those changes and standards remain as robust today. Go figure.

Makes me angry that the government brought in Part P & CPS, but the likes of NIC don't effectively police their members, so the cowboys get away with cutting corners time and again.
