@@melissareohorn7436 Also highly addictive, but they didn't know that yet, for some reason I will never understand, since alcoholism had been around for millennia by that point!
To be fair, the consumption of beer is even older than Victorian era. Most medieval people tend to drink beer than water. And the beer was light enough to not get drunk.
my whole family LOVE horrible histories and after watching this sketch my dad stood up said "fuck i'm inventing the time machine" i was like "what?" he replied "going back to a time where beer is healthier than water... my life would be AMAZING!!"
Chris Winfield I can say that is surprising though not hard to imagine since not every country has access to clean drinking water.. It's like WOW though for the rest of the developed world would be scared and horrified of letting children drink alcohol but in those countries it's like an everyday thing and also they have no access to clean drinking water. Seems the threat of Cholera and infectious disease still is haunting us to this day.
Come to think of it, Jamestown was only founded where they founded it because they ran out of beer and only had water from barrels left to drink. So they stopped at the first opportunity and settled right there.
I can't believe this was made in England. American TV is so reserved, you can't show any actual funny violence on it and we don't even show cartoon characters getting drunk anymore, for God sakes what has happened to our media what we cared he would make fun of cartoons getting hammered.
Yeah it's sad to see that reality. Like AeroDoe says see Homer Jay Simpson or I can say you can blame it all on the Soccermoms which are described as people who blame everything and everyone but themselves and are like rich or characterized like the wife of Reverand Lovejoy from the Simpsons as saying, "Won't someone please think of the children." For that lady I can say I'm not into you or the children and personally I think your insane and are too much in the right wing category. Also I can agree with a lot of other sane people or as sane as can be saying leave our stuff alone and get a life.
@AlSidre That's true, I remember it was brandy mixed with a little water. I guess it works like sugared water, when I had my first blood test, I almost passed out so the nurse bought me some sugared water and biscuits. Horrible to drink but it worked.
Also people had a lot to really worry about back then and I mean really worry and life expectancy wasn't always so good in the past aside from the water.
Kelly Chuang Yes, completely right, there was also the ice-cream because with the penny licks, they would wipe it with a dirty cloth, the toffee made from dirty sugar, the cheese flavoured with red lead, rat droppings in gruel and chocolate that was actually brown candle wax melted down, the food then was very dangerous.
chris winfield Well you are right about the water, that is true, they sadly have to drink water full, of bacteria, dirt and animal droppings which is why Oxfam and Comic Relief is a good idea.
@JuniusFaction But they would have known to boil it, the Greeks figured out that boiling and distilling water can purify it. When brewing beer the water is boiled when it's mixed with the malt in the mashing process.
Draw back, for the first twenty eight years of The Victorian era barely was a heavly taxed product, so the price were very high. Beer was exspensive, so victorians had to find a cheeped alternative. Their answer, gin.
@cyclepod1 The family reunions must have been tense :) Then again, half of my mum's side were pub owners while the other side became methodists and police officers.
