This video shows a quick flight of a Giant Scale Sopwith Pup WWI Warbird on a windy day. It was the only RC Plane Crash at the 2015 Warbirds Over Whatcom event today and it was horrible! Even so, I feel lucky to have captured it on video!

This crash was pretty bad, but it wasn't quite as bad as my buddy Bill's HobbyKing Durafly MK-24 Spitfire WWII Warbird exploding when it hit the ground. Both will be on my next RC Plane Crash Compilation video though!
Here is what Wiki has to say about this Bipe:
"The Sopwith Pup was a British single-seater biplane fighter aircraft built by the Sopwith Aviation Company. It entered service with the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service in the autumn of 1916. With pleasant flying characteristics and good maneuverability, the aircraft proved very successful. The Pup was eventually outclassed by newer German fighters, but it was not completely replaced on the Western Front until the end of 1917. Remaining Pups were relegated to Home Defense and training units. The Pup's docile flying characteristics also made it ideal for use in aircraft carrier deck landing and takeoff experiments.
In May 1916, the RNAS received its first Pups for operational trials with "A" Naval Squadron. The first Pups reached the Western Front in October 1916 with No. 8 Squadron RNAS, and proved successful, with the squadron's Pups claiming 20 enemy machines destroyed in operations over the Somme battlefield by the end of the year.[2] The first RFC Squadron to re-equip with the Pup was No. 54 Squadron, which arrived in France in December. The Pup quickly proved its superiority over the early Fokker, Halberstadt and Albatros biplanes. After encountering the Pup in combat, Manfred von Richthofen said, "We saw at once that the enemy airplane was superior to ours."[3]
The Pup's light weight and generous wing area gave it a good rate of climb. Agility was enhanced by installing ailerons on both wings. The Pup had half the horsepower and armament of the German Albatros D.III, but was much more manoeuvrable, especially over 15,000 ft (4,500 m) due to its low wing loading. Ace James McCudden stated that "When it came to manoeuvring, the Sopwith [Pup] would turn twice to an Albatros' once ... it was a remarkably fine machine for general all-round flying. It was so extremely light and well surfaced that after a little practice one could almost land it on a tennis court."[3] However, the Pup was also longitudinally unstable.
At the peak of its operational deployment, the Pup equipped only four RNAS squadrons (Nos. 3, 4, 8 and 9), and three RFC squadrons (Nos. 54, 46 and 66). By the spring of 1917, the Pup had been outclassed by the newest German fighters. The RNAS replaced their Pups, first with Sopwith Triplanes, and then with Sopwith Camels. The RFC soldiered on with Pups, in spite of increasing casualties, until it was possible to replace them with Camels in December 1917."

Sorry for the loss. Abort that takeoff next time, I think winds were not favorable. Sometimes the hype of the crowd makes you want to fly when you should not. Did that with my DC-3 crashed on the maiden flight in front of everyone at a scale fly in. Bruised ego but I learned something and rebuilt the plane. On to the next one!

Lack of experience no doubt. To anyone that want's to fly a large scale plane but worried about loosing a lot of money, do what I did, get a 1/4 scale Piper Cub because they are so easy to fly. I have a 50cc in mine so I could have unlimited vertical. 104'' wingspan 16lbs. I've had it for 6 years without as much as a scratch on a wingtip for about $750

Adam Houston That is solid advice. I do need to clarify that this pilot flew this plane without issues for close to a decade before this happened the other day. GB

Anyone who comments that they prefer "foamies" is only experiencing half the RC hobby. Nothing can take the place of opening a box of sticks, unrolling a sheet of plans, and immersing oneself in a winter-long building project. That's the half of the RC hobby that is sadly sinking into the past. Beautiful airplane, and its owner should be very proud of the great work he did long before it ever got into the air.
@GBLynden
@GBLynden 8 лет назад
+ytdhable That is true and priorities depends a lot on your goals in the hobby along with time, financial, and space resources. I have and always will have a ton of respect for folks who take the time to build planes like this. Everyone that gets to see them fly is privileged.

@hotdogandahayride9823
@hotdogandahayride9823 9 лет назад
I'm having trouble understanding the last few seconds of this unfortunate event. Is the plane simply unable to fly without thrust from the engine? It looked like the altitude and airspeed should have been enough to get it back for an emergency landing. I wasn't there and I don't fly scale planes like this, so maybe I'm misjudging the situation.
@mrvoyagerm
@mrvoyagerm 8 месяцев назад
Not.
@Twangmaster22
@Twangmaster22 7 лет назад
ouch... outta Power, outta Altitude, outta Ideas, and outta skills all at the same time = crunch! Honestly, this plane was WAY out in front of the Pilot in terms of his flying skills. It appeared to be out of control from the moment he opened the throttle. That was a typical torque/throttle turn on the take off run, and with the short coupling of that design, it's gonna be touchy to any control input. Flying that close to the flight line, or over the heads of the pilot stations (or so it appeared), is strictly verbotten according to AMA rules. Doing just that is a sure symptom of an 'I aint got it" yell, when he's actually waaay behind the airplane. I've seen way too many magnificent builders who just can't fly much more than a Cub try to build and fly something that's either a way under-powered kite, or an over weight over powered missle, either of which is way beyond their flying skills. That's why there is a team event for builder and separate pilot! I hate to see good building skills, money, time, blood and probably more than 1 late night go down the tubes so quick. Guys like this need to just hand the transmitter over to a good pilot who's never done anything but assemble Chinese made ARF's. He'll probably try to hover that Pup, and get away with it whining about how it 'wing rocks pretty bad in a Harrier, dude!'

Yep they reliably deliver crash videos year after year. At no point during this flight did I feel he had full control. No right rudder on takeoff, could not hold pitch going up then down erratically, a botched loop and ended with a high speed stall at which point he stopped flying the plane all together. Classic

***** I think it was a mechanical issue combined with pilot error. I watched the flight a number of times and it seems to me like there was something off with the elevator and/or it was tail heavy. The wind was strong, but it just flew strangely.

You don't fly those at right angles like unless they are with full power. This should have been a rudder only landing with little elevator as necessary to give as flat a landing as possible. I actually think the guy got disorientated and flew it into the ground. These bi-planes fly at very low speeds so its not as though it was stalled or anything. Nightmare as they take around 100 hours to build.

As others have pointed out; this guy was waaaaay over his head. It's sheer luck that he didn't end up plowing into the crowd. I hope the host club officers realize that and don't allow him to fly at events until he has a couple seasons flying sport planes if at all. In fact; the AMA should look into how the host club decides which people are qualified to fly when there's a crowd. Also too. Taking off without actually running the throttle up and down a few times is another warning sign. I'll bet the model never even had a "tilt test" to check the jetting.

Get better grammar if you're going to critique someone and add some videos while you're at it so we can judge you too. The guy flying it was trying to show off for a crowd and clearly wasn't thinking. It happens.

OUCH!!!..........................I always cringe when I see a model that is poorly controlled right from throttle up to the crash scene. The take off should have been aborted, that's a sign that the model was flying the driver not the other way around, the driver was just going along for the ride to the point of impact, what a shame it looked great too:-(
