This was one of the worst wipeouts we've seen in a long time... New York surfer Will Skudin towed into the belly of the beast on 12.28.2023, whipped in by jet ski driver Nic Von Rupp.

Here's 2 points to make: #1. He's surfing backside (backhand) therefore on a wave that is a Right hander, his back is to the wave, therefore can't see the wave coming at him. #2. My friend once said (he's a very wise young man) "it's always better to pull in, into the barrel, because if you're gonna wipeout, better to track inside the barrel for as long as you can, and let it swallow you up, inside of it." Definitely do not want to allow the lip to land on you. This is called the impact zone. Worst place you can be.

And closest to the bottom, water at that speed is treacherous, but you really only need to hold your breath ! the bottom is deadly !and not always smooth or without coral or rocks ! California doesn't have coral but my head knows a couple of the rocks personally 😂 And most of California is tame compared to this big time "crazy person place" 😂

Trust Will is okay, if not quite bruised. I live in Toronto, Canada and my son and I have surfed on waves all over the world, but can't practice nearly enough to do what you guys do. Safe travels and always push limits!

@@maverickssurfawards3035 I can't help myself! I've been a licensed California water treatment guy for years. Water is 62.4 pounds per cubic foot but because ocean water is almost 3% salt, seawater is about 64 pounds per cubic foot and there are 27 ft.³ in a cubic yard.

I like big waves but I've never totally understood why people surf here. It rarely barrels, it's super gnarly, comparatively dangerous in the surfing world AND it's cold. . . and yes horrendous wipe out after it all Oh no!

It's bad when the big ass lip hits you, you could get the wind knocked out of you. It's way worse when that lip hits you and knocks you right into your board and you do the split or straddle and your crotch scrubs with fury. OR When you get drilled head first into the board or locked together in a close proximity tumble and the board slides one way or the other when the fins can be like sharp knives with great power and no mercy. I have seen or experienced all these. Cold water is denser and feels harder when you get slammed. Then there's the washing machine and next waves to ponder... Dislocations and broken ribs or worse in this size wave.

I always consider Mavericks to be the standard number is 40 foot. A small day at Mavericks is 20 ft. 35 footers will be common. Pipeline, for comparison is huge at 25 ft. Pipeline reaches 30 ft, but it's nearly impossible (or very rare) for Pipeline bigger than 30 ft. The biggest ever Mavericks, I think it can reach 60 ft.
