I remember the author Ishida came out to said he/they got the wrong company/studio to adapt the manga. Even the live action adaption has better review than the anime.
uh oh we got a mangatard..."source material" that's what gave it away. Once you become an anime only watcher you don't care about that source material bs. Not following the source material doesn't ruin an anime, it ruins the manga and if you don't read manga it doesn't matter
It was a very strange show. I started it just to see if it was going to be just unique pov camera angles, then the bath scene happened and I just couldn't. But I did skip through it to see if there was any form of plot or just a reason as to how or why he turned into a dog which was a mistake because it became a harem.
@@herlastborn hot take: it's an entertaining show, you can laugh your ass off for the pure stupidity and you can enjoy it without popping a single boner.
I love that once when Junji Ito talked about Gyo he basically just said he thinks sharks are scary but they are in the ocean so it's not that bad and then he went ...but what if they weren't... just in the ocean. And so came land sharks with robot legs lmao. Love him so much
To be fair, only one of them wants to bang the guy when he's a tiny dog. It's a good thing they didn't use a bigger breed of dog or we may have been looking at a much worse plot.
51:00 I think my favorite part about Gyo is how Ito came up with the idea for it apparently. Apparently, he was terrified of the ocean and the creatures in it but was like "well, at least they can't come on land.... but what if they could?" And supposedly, that's how Gyo was born into existence.
I’ve always wanted to do that because it sounds so much fun even though I hate being scared, and I remember in high school I think was 15, a girl in my class was going to be a scare actor for that season and she got to lie in a coffin and jump out and scare people
I remember a nightmare where i was watching anime when the monster just charged directly at the camera and started tearing through like the boundaries of the world, the art becoming more and more realistic before the hero would drag it back. Fucking horrifying
I love Connor's outrage over the dog anime. The giga brain plot line from that episode of Ghost in the Shell is literally the plot of the money making scheme Peter and his friends use in the American movie, Office Space. Also, I don't think any of them have seen the Street Fighter anime films. The movie for Street Fighter II is one of the old school classic anime films. They're referencing it in the new Street Fighter game in one of Cammy's Super moves.
Junji Ito's Uzumaki is actually getting an adaptation, it's in the making for a while now, looks awesome in the trailer and the music is so eerie and cool, have high hopes for that (And it's not the goofy Gyo 3d animation, its actually good)
Yeah its looking killer and they're properly taking their time with it from the looks of it. As long as they're using their time wisely, it WILL be groundbreaking... I'm surprised the boys didnt talk about it
1:15:15 Joey and Connor's reactions to Garnt explaining the isekai dog anime had me dead 😂💀 Like BRUH, like I'm advocate for free speech and creative freedom... but that should NOT be an anime!
Isn't it considered Japanese horror ? Or old school japanese scary things I know it's prequel series ayakashi samurai horror tales is definitely considered horror so Tldr yes
@@yatogami8828 "more like psychological type of horror" so it is horror? I don't see the need to be so anal about genre labels, reminding me of the metal community: "that's not death metal, it's blackened bdsm gothic deathcore," and why is body horror supposed to be harder to adapt? it's literally easier than other types of horror because it's so visual
@@grey_f98 maybe because there are different genres of horror? you know so that we can put stuff in different boxes to make it easier to know exactly what type of genre it is.
I've been to the one Connor went before the pandemic. It was a lot of fun and even though I'm like Joey and Garnt, it's incredibly tense and has a scary atmosphere. Although I will say, the cast members in the haunted house did touch people, myself included. Maybe they got rid of touching people because of the pandemic, but I was like Connor where "oh they won't touch me, it's not scary", then they touch you and it gets real scary real quick cause that invisible barrier gets shattered and you're exposed
When Hereditary ended, I just started crying. My body couldn't handle the intensity lol. But I still always recommend it, even if people don't like horror. How those movies engage with the theme of grief is very well done.
I remember that I couldn’t finish Hereditary the first time I watched because of the scene where the little girl was having an allergy attack and I have a severe nut allergy so it really messed me up and I never thought a horror movie could ever use something that is literally my worst nightmare, and that’s what made Hereditary so good
i think another great example of a horror/unsettling moment in a non-horror anime is the infamous scene from fma with nina and her dog. the reveal made me feel so unnerved and sick, it was so well done.
I feel like the 2003 adaptation in particular really leaned into the darker aspects of the manga in a way which Brotherhood shied away from somewhat. I suspect that this is because the series composition for FMA 2003 was handled by Shou Aikawa, who started out writing ultraviolent schlock OVAs-most infamously Genocyber, Angel Cop and Violence Jack-and while he later mellowed out and lost most of that venomous misanthropy, there's still a downbeat, even morbid edge to a lot of his writing which lends itself well to horror.
I tend to find Japan is way better at psychological horror than conventional horror. When you consider that stuff like End Of Evangelion and Madoka Magica come under that label, there really are some amazing psych horror anime
Man, imagine if you tell them about the Golden Age of Porn back in the 70s when they used to legit have porn with plot in theaters and have it reviewed by mainstream publications
Some of the artwork was pretty unsettling but I dropped it after one volume because the fanservice felt so desperate and pointless. Maybe I’ll go back to it in the future, I hear it gets better further into the story.
I can't believe the guys went through a bunch of lists of best anime horror, full of anime that barely classify as such, and none of them even cited Shiki anywhere
@@wherestoomy8880 True, more people need to find out about the greatness that is Umineko. Higurashi got me into it and i cant thank it enough for that
5:40 'I know Japanese houses have small backyards, but I'm *pretty* sure they're big enough to bury a body' That would have been a good contender for Best Out of Context moment...
The boys reaction to the dog isekai is the hardest I’ve laughed at a trash taste episode in months. Also, I’ll always have a fond memory of Highschool of the Dead even tho I haven’t watched it simply because that’s how I originally found Gigguk and got dragged into the anime rabbit hole. His review video way back when was my first introduction on RU-vid
Honestly if done right Nightmare on Elm Street would probably be an amazing anime. Like make it take place in Japan and make the nightmare sequences really trippy . I don’t know but would definitely watch it if they did it right.
Hearing Gigguk talking about falling asleep through history of the universe videos is hilarious because that's literally the trash taste podcast for me xD I finish one video in like 4 or 5 days
Talking about Tales of the Macabre with my friends, I think we figured out the exact way to phrase why these Junji Itou adaptations keep failing. Junji Itou has a ton of incredibly camp ideas. You look at some of his stories and the premise is just rediculous. However, he presents it in such a way that you can't see the camp, you just see is horrifyingly skillful artwork. Without that level of skill, they are just camp stories. I will say the Uzumaki adaptation is looking promising. The 45 second teaser they released shows that they are putting everything into making it look good. However, between already being 3 years late, not getting an update since last June, and the knowledge that Adult Swim's parent company axed a large majority of non-Velma animated series and I have to say at this point it isn't likely to be completed.
@@vivvy_0 I'd guess they either mean Tldr: A) Campy: as in like a spoofy horror movie. B) Camp: like a campfire story. Full explanation: A) Campy: "absurdly exaggerated, artificial, or affected in a usually humorous way." Basically just a story that seems basic and a bit mundane, not hitting anything deep. Like a spoofy horror movie. I disagree personally if that's what they meant, because I think most of his stories follow a plot line that, while it might be simple and can ramp up quickly, usually hit some pretty interesting psychological horror points that seem more focused on a person's fear than their thought process of said fear. Or B) Camp is meant to mean campfire story esque, in that they're the story you would tell to your friends if you're in a spooky mood. Usually these don't focus on too much detail, and tend to lack a lot of substance, so once again I disagree, but less so than with A.
A good horror anime that no one remembers: Ghost Hunt. Everyone forgot it because of it's generic name and character designs, but it delivers pretty well. It's based on the ghost hunting craze of 10-15 years ago, and it delivers some pretty solid scares, good lore, and likeable characters. The execution is better than the generic premise would suggest.
Back in the 80s, I saw Vampire Princess Miyu (OVA only, subbed) and loved it. I only have 2 episodes of it now and have been looking for the other 2 for a long time. Another reason I love it is that it shows Kyoto station before it was rebuilt, back when I was living in Kyoto. They even drew the building I used to work in.
@@orvvollyonthe amount of fanservice in the manga is ridiculous, every single page has something, at least in the first volume. I dropped it after that, how pervy it was just came across as desperate and lazy and made it a serious tonal mismatch.
If anyone has seen Yamishibai (specifically just the first season) that felt to me the closest to a Junji Itou adaptation we could get, where you could have the art style as cutouts, plus some good sound design and lighting to really sell it.
I think the reason why Isekai is so popular is that it's easy to write in. It's basically paint-by-number at the start usually. The reader and the main character(s) are both in the same situation and are trying to understand their new situation all while leaning on the same background (usually). This lets authors basically have their story hit the ground running. Ex: There is a world of difference between introducing a reader to KonoSuba's, Spider-Kun, Slime-kun, or Overlord; versus, Mistborn, Way of Kings, Malazan, First Law, Powdermage, etc. I'm not sure how much this is the author's fault, how much its the publishing industry's fault, or the readers.
The most recent scary movie that scared me so much is skinamarink. Everyone hates this movie because it's experimental analog horror that has nothing going on on screen for most of the time but just as the director said during their first screening that the movie will probably not be for everyone but after watching, try and sleep alone in the dark and you'll probably have trouble sleeping. They've literally captured that feeling of being a kid in your room in the dark at night trying to sleep and you see something weird and you let your imagination run wild and get scared out of your mind as a kid.
When it comes to horror, I hate jump scares. It's too easy. I enjoy The first paranormal and even the first season of American Horror Story cause of how unsettling they are. I remember an episode of Buffy as a kid that gave me nightmares for weeks. Where the guys in suits who couldn't speak and floated slightly above the ground.
Thank you for talking about Trigun Stampede! The director said season 3 is dependent on how popular Trigun s1 and s2 is. Hope more people watch it bc its incredibly well made!
I always say Mononoke is one of the greatest mythical/historical mystery anime... Cause personally it wasn't scary or too unsettling, however that may be because I was too busy thirsting for the medicine seller. 10/10 definitely recommend it.
It's funny Garnt says how fun it would be to be a scarer at a haunted house cause I actually worked at a haunted corn maze when I was a teenager and it was so damn fun hiding in the corn and scaring people
16:31 the coolest thing about Hereditary is that the tiny clues all through the movie that foreshadow the full plot. i swear to god, every time i rewatch it i find a new clue that pertains to the cult.
The flipped POV between a killer and a victim also gets featured in the 1995 movie Strange Days (written by James Cameron!) which takes place in a world where there exist devices that can record and playback every single thing a person was feeling/seeing/hearing when the recording was made. This gets used to a horrifying effect when a woman gets violently abused and is then murdered while seeing and feeling everything from the killers POV in realtime.
i showed KITE to my friend as her first ever anime, the uncut version, she actually liked it. its one of my favorite 90's OVA's. love the story, the art, the action scenes, soundtrack. its soo good.
Kinda weird that they called it a hentai, because watching it. it felt more like a movie with if i recall correctly like 2 sex scenes. I thought it was amazing
@@Bonlaws theres i think 4 sex scenes. but all last less than a minute or so. they clearly did not intend you to fap to it. they also serve a purpose in the story. even if its fucked up.
I too am a Junji Ito fan that's been burned by the anime adaptations, but I have really high hopes for the Uzumaki series - if it ever comes out - because the little teaser they released for it like 1 or 2 years ago is stunning.
The Junji Ito manga where everyone turn into spirals really fucked me up as a teenager, I had severe anxiety and for some reason my genius brain decided that Junji Ito was a good choice to read 2h before bed. After that i got PTSD basically from just seeing spirals, it took years before i could draw a spiral without getting shivers.
Creepypastas can get some pretty good scares outta me. The best ones have this mythical mystery built in within the entire community where it's believable enough that it's like, "Okayyy, is this real?" When I was a kid, I used to be deathly afraid of the Slender-Man in its peak. All of those slender sighting videos, hieroglyphic evidence videos and articles, and all the signs he was coming after you; especially if you're a kid. I was so scared I literally had a hallucination of him appearing outside my window! As much as I hated those days, you just don't find those types of horror experiences often.
Definitely more fun as a kid when it's easier to suspend disbelief and play along with it. It's that transition from "maybe there's a monster under my bed" to "maybe this post warning about a cursed photo circulating online is legit" to "fuck I wish real life was actually that interesting".
Connor hit the nail on the head on why I can't watch TT videos going to sleep. I'd be halfway into the dream and the boys would start laughing at something.
As someone who’s been a scaredy cat almost their entire life, getting into horror in general was a big deal for me as I felt like I couldn’t handle it but I’m glad I’m desensitised to it now because it’s one of my favourite genres, I’m still finding horror games difficult to handle
Hopefully we will get to see the new ProZD episode soon, as well as Connor's crane game with him. Once again I ask in the hopes of seeing Rachel and Jun on the podcast.
Ghost Hunt is one of my absolute favorite supernatural horror anime. Not every arc is a banger, but it nails the creepy vibe much better than many horror anime I have seen. I rewatch it every year around Halloween.
I am genuinely sad that you guys did not discuss the Uzumaki anime which looks absolutely incredible also I'm genuinely sad that you guys haven't talked about the new Trigun more
My favorite haunted house is the Universal one in America. They kinda theme everything and have a bunch of jump scares while still following a coherent story line which is really cool
i really like trash taste, even though i do not watch anime that much now because i kinda got bored, every time that i got a notification of a new episode of trash traste i watch it through the end, because the way the boys talk about diferent topics you know, just dudes shooting sh..t and chilling makes it really a enjoyable podcast to listen to, thanks always for bringing us this content guys and keep up the good work.
I also don’t watch a lot of horror movies but I enjoyed The quiet place a lot. It is unnerving and the quietness that the monster forces is great. There is no jump scare and the terror comes from dread.
When the boys talked about RU-vidrs with calming voices that put people to sleep I remembered VaatiVidya. I easily get knocked out by his soothing voice lol.
It seems like a weird backhanded compliment but I absolutely understand what you are saying. I specifically listen to VaatiVidya when I'm struggling to go to sleep and it works every time. I'm a fan.
I remember as a kid just walking out of my living room when my family was watching Signs and the scene of the Alien walks across the allyway. I remember just telling my parents "Nope! Ok! I'm done! Goodnight!".
As a horror "fan" I was major side eyeing Connor for saying there's only been 1 to 2 good horror movies in the past decade. I know he did say he didn't watch horror that much. But there's been a huge buzz for all the good horror movies in 2022. And like out of the 3 of them he's the one who's most aware of the contemporary film scene, he's the only who regularly goes to the cinema.
My first haunted house as a kid I was chased by a guy with a chainsaw for about 5 minutes. I remember having the most insane adrenaline rush while being on the verge of tears.
Horror is just as much about how you describe things as it is about knowing what to describe and what not to. Letting someones imagination run wild thinking about the unknowable its key
Hunter x Hunter the first 10 or 20 eps of Chimera Ant arc is really scary. It feels unnerving, thrilling and the way they portray that Chimera Ant could be in real life and how they involve when killing people and Nen users is terrifying. And let not forget, the first appearance of Pitou
