I feel like everybody should have their own criteria of what makes a horror movie. If you think The Silence of the Lambs, Se7en, Jaws, or The Terminator is horror, cool. But there shouldn’t be people that say “well actually Jaws isn’t a horror movie”. Everybody definition of horror can be different and that’s cool!

Scream has one of the biggest fanbases when it comes to horror. It saved the genre back in the 90s and still continues to thrive today, thanks to Neve Campbell, Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson. Conventions still have some of the cast members invited today, especially Neve.

I wouldn't go as far as it saved horror, but it gave the slasher new life.

I think some of it too is that the thriller and horror genres often bleed into each other, which can make it hard to classify certain films as one or the other. There are films out there that I personally struggle to determine which genre they should fall into. That's not me gatekeeping, that's me trying to figure out what the most accurate category is. I have also handled situations where someone who has not seen really any horror films and has certain stigmas about the genre because they think horror films have x, y, or z thing that they don't want to see. And in a situation like that, in order to convince them to try new things, I might downplay that it's a horror film just because by their understanding of what a horror film is, the film in question isn't a horror film. Again, that's not gatekeeping, that's just saying, "this movie isn't the thing you think a horror film is, and you might actually enjoy it if you give it a chance."

Smallville is even still popular today, that Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum still do conventions today to meet the fans.

I never thought of them as horror movies but as you point out, there are horror elements to them. I have heard of the big debate, Is Die Hard a christmas movie?

Well, in my opinion, the fantastic classic "Die Hard" is definitely a Christmas movie. 🎄🎅Give me "Die Hard" (and even "Die Hard 2") any day of the week to watch during the holiday season. 😄🙂

Jaws can defenitley be called horror as a horror/adventure, and same with silence of the lambs as a horror/thriller. Terminator blends a lot of genre's so to call it just a horror is fair while a little untrue of the movie as a techno-slasher/action thriller (thriller just because it's got SO MUCH action following two perople trying to survive). But se7en is definitley more noir/crime...to call that horror would be your own choice but also would be kinda weird. I don't think this is gatekeeping but just people trying to understand where their favourite movies fit.

I agree with you on Jaws, but I don't think the other 3 are horrors. Terminator is science fiction above all, Silence of the Lambs is suspense drama and I agree with you on Seven not being horror.

The answer is simple: slashers get a free pass. In the horror comunity only slashers matter. Michael, Jason, Freddy, Ghostface and Chucky all are considered great no many how many bad movies they produce. If you see the Conjuring, for example, that has a much better track record then most slasher franchises, it gets completly trashed by the horror comunity, and the real reason it's because the fact that it's not a slasher. Horror = gore and kills.

Slasher implies slashing. It’s not because we’re gatekeeping it just doesn’t fit the bill for some of us. If the primary weapon is a gun it’s just not a slasher. For me, anyway.

Jaws would be my favorite horror movie. It’s horror completely in my mind. As a Miami kid, being shown that movie at the age of 4 and being taken to the beach the next day freaking terrified me 😂 I straight up would not want to go to the beach for a year. Even the ride at Universal Studios had me on edge first time I went on it.

I don't consider Jaws, Silence of the Lambs or Se7en as pure horror films, but that doesn't mean I don't love them, in fact all three are amongst my favourite films ever (Jaws even surpasses all films that I and most other people would consider "proper horror films")

“Purists” to me sounds like a person who thinks they, for some miracle, understand a subjective movie or genre or piece of art more than you or I Art is Art, to me Halloween (78’) can mean one thing & to you another No Country for Old Men is by some considered a comedy, I disagree

most hilarious part about the horror/not horror debate is the hoops people jump through. it's got horror elements, but not horror. more of a thriller, not horror. dark psychological thriller, not horror.

Most movies are mixed with different genres but I feel like some of you people are reaching with wanting to put Silence of the Lambs or Seven in horror. That would be like putting Terms of Endearment in the comedy section of the video store back in the day. It has funny moments but it's a drama first. Silence of the Lambs, Seven and Terminator are not straight up horror movies.

it's not a splatter fest, but it is horror. he's skinning his victims after keeping them in a well. and he kidnaps them. and lecter is creepy as hell just while locked up. him breaking out is about 10 times worse. how is that not horror?

Here’s the thing I do NOT care for horror films with very few exceptions and I do not consider jaws or silence of the lamb horror films (that is not to say I like those films ( cause I don’t)) I just don’t see them as horror cause is mostly supernatural things (like the shining) or things of fiction (like alien) but something that’s a very real physical threat (not to say the supernatural isn’t real cause it is but it’s just not truly understood by most people) like a psycho or a shark it just doesn’t feel like horror to me

idk something about a real person inflicting real harm is scary. because it's something that could legitimately happen. and the shining is still about an abusive husband going crazy, and trying to murder his family.

@@LukeLovesRose Silence of the Lambs is a mystery/thriller/drama. Jaws is a thriller/adventure. What is wrong with you? Do you seriously think that there are only two genres, horror and drama? Or are you trying to suggest that I was calling them exclusive dramas? If that's the case then you are dishonest at the very least.
