The Orphanage is so sad. I remember being so afraid of it when I was a kid because of the trailers but when I watched it, it wasn't at all what I expected. It's a very sad story.

Thanks for acknowledging 'The Fly', I think it's a somewhat forgotten film from the 80's and doesn't get enough praise.

Before you suggest movies I think people should think about the difference between horror and suspense/thriller. I don't agree with Silence of Lambs being on the list because I don't think it's a horror.

Trick R Treat is another great film. Not super scary but the individual stories are great

Babadook was just obnoxious. The kid made me want to rip my eyes out the whole time lol

I actually thought Drag Me to Hell was more comical than scary, with it being a Sam Raimi Movie I wasn't suprised

Silence of the lambs was a beautiful movie. Anthony Hopkins was amazing and epic. The relationship between his character and Jodie Foster was well written and a classic

“Carrie” has such a rad ending.. Totally comic book like. Loved it!

I'd like to see When A Stranger Calls on a list like this. That is, the original with Carol Kane. I know there was a remake which I never saw. I don't think the story translates today but for those of us who remember life before cell phones, the film hit all the right notes.

A little surprised that "Let the right one in" isn't mentioned anywhere. The original version, not the English one. A truly disturbing film on so many levels but excellent at the same time.

i honestly thought IT chapter one was basically perfect, i love it so much. literally my only complaint is that it relied on jumpscares more than it needed to, and emphasized the jumpscares with audio stingers, which it didn't have to do.

Great list. I love all these movies but you should make part 2. The Shining, Black Christmas (1974), Suspiria (1977), Tenebre, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), The Thing, Inside, Jaws should be there too

The Orphanage is my favourite horror film. It balances drama, creepy ambiance, constant dread, and it doesn't rely on jump scares. Many horror films end in tragedy and contain twists, but not like this one.

Fun fact, the orphanage was filmed in some Spanish speaking country and was filmed in Spanish dialogue so my 8th grade Spanish teacher let us watch in class

I've watched almost all of these movies and The Orphanage is the one that hit me the hardest. It even made me cry a little. I left that movie shaken.

I love movies like Hereditary where it's not trying to scare you the whole time. It tells you a twisted story and the scares seem beautiful that way

Thing about the shining, the thing, and the exorcist, is that everyone knows they're perfect.

I remember seeing A Nightmare On Elm Street at the theater when I was 11, and couldn't believe how packed the local movie theater was for the Saturday matinee. Still one of my all time favorites today, better than all the sequels combined. It's not that they're necessarily bad ( for those who love them) ; just not as good.

I can`t believe "It follows" gets so much praise from so many people. When I watched it I found it totally cheesy and cliche but I guess I`ll have to give it another watch.

How did "The Ring" not make the cut? That scene where the Samara crawls out of the TV was extremely terrifying! Everybody in the theater, including yours truly, was jumping out of their seats.

So we're just going to forget about THE EXORCIST and THE SHINING? Oh, and Re-Animator, Cat People, Evil Dead II, Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, Cannibal Holocaust, Suspiria, Phantasm?

The Orphanage was just unbelievably sad. I bawled while watching that one, it's heartbreaking..also - Fragile is a perfect horror movie. So is the Taking of Deborah Logan.

The Orphanage is one of the most tragic, yet bittersweet movies I have ever seen. Wept like a baby. Standard Guillermo del Toro. Something horrifically tragic happens, and then something bittersweet and beautiful.

They needed to break this list down into decades!! What's considered scary or good in one decade could look laughable in just a 10 year time period. At least this way, the films have even playing field.

"Drag Me To Hell" is basically Stephen King's "Thinner" ... change my mind.

I sat in the parking lot and cried for a few minutes after seeing The Orphanage. So profoundly sad. And perfect.

Saw Alien on the big screen at our local cinema yesterday - picked up things I have never noticed before. And what happened to The Exorcist and The Thing? You can replace either of those with Drag Me To Hell which was a second rate film at best.

People need to see the French film "High Tension" for unrelenting horror.

The ending of the fly is so good and sad at the same time. I love how there is really great emotion between The couple and the hard act she must commit while the man as the fly knows what he has become and urges her to shoot.

I am so glad the Orphanage was on this list and I decided to watch it. Fantastic film. Beautifully shot and directed. The ending gave me chills. Highly recommend

I have to throw out: Event Horizon, Annihilation, and The Void. All of them are truly scary because they leave so much to our imagination and thats when we discover how terrifying our own minds.

silence of the lambs isn’t really a horror movie in my book :/ it’s far more of a psychological thriller than a scary movie.

the orphanage is the only one i've seen of these, but god is it one of my favorite movies. it's so subtle with it's horror and it's horror comes from realistic fears and anxieties such as losing your child or hearing strange noises in your house

Hereditary changed my life. Not only the story, Toni's oscar award winning performance that got to my heart, not just the real-life myths brought into the story, not just the double-entendre title, but also the ending music. I've never felt such grotesque disgust and pure brilliant joy from a song without words. Colin Stetson is the musical genius that I listen to now. I felt actual fear when the movie was over. I've never felt that. I so hope I come across another movie that reignites that feeling. I really do.

This is an excellent list but The Thing and The Wicker Man are missing. A truly disturbing ending to the latter film!

I am afraid this list should be retitled 'alternative creepy films mixed with a bunch of cult classics in a hope to get hits from the cool kids'

I had to give y'all a thumbs down for spoiling tf out of Hereditary. Why say "That scene with the sketchbook..." like your trying to be vague but then straight out show a major character's death scene?

Good choices for the most part, Loops. But you missed a few: Goodnight, Mommy. Ringu. . Descent. Hellraiser. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Donald Sutherland version). Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. The Thing. The Shining. Dawn of the Dead. The Omen. The Exorcist Hostel.

I rarely see eye to eye with yt lists but this one is on point.

Drag Me To Hell wasn’t that good of a movie and does not hold up well in my opinion. It should’ve been replaced with The Thing or The Descent

I had the Halloween theme as a ringtone. One night at work, my cell rang, and a coworker, who had never seen the movie, and did not know the theme song said to me, "I don't know why, but every time I hear that I feel like I should be running for my life!". Now that's one heck of a testimony of how scary the Halloween theme song truly is!

Poltergeist haunted me for years, it's amazing but dated yes. I do love the orphanage from your list. What a movie!

The orphanage ... honestly I was scared at first but that ending made me cry it’s so sad to find out what really happened there and what our girl had to do in the end 😭❤️

One of the most overlooked but perfect horror movies of all time is Pumpkinhead. It's not just a "stalking monster" movie. It's about abject loss and grief, vengeance and redemption. The things we will do in the heat of horrific grief and the ultimate price we must pay to undo what we've wrought in the moment. Ed Harley's visit to the witch to call upon Pumpkinhead to kill those who killed his son was one of Lance Henrikson's best performances (as was the whole movie, in fact). Watching the vengeance demon plow through those who even got in the way of it reaching its target reminds us of how dangerous wrath and revenge truly is. The true brilliance though is watching the movie slowly begin to look more and more like Ed. When he finally realizes he has to take his own life to stop the monster, we see the ultimate price to be paid for vengeance. I still watch this movie every once in awhile and it gets me every time.

I watch Carrie with Sissy Spacek, she was perfect in this movie, I still get creep out watching that scene, when the bucket of blood falls on her head and she goes into killer mode. She looks like she is 17 years old, but was 27 years old when she played in Carrie.

John Carpenter's The Thing. Any "best of" horror film list without this film is worthless.

I recommend Dark night of the scarecrow a 1980's made for t.v. film that actor Vincent Price said "Scared the hell out of me"!

My first contact with "The Fly" was a reading of it on radio decades ago. Scared me so much that summer flies would send me running. It might have been on either the old Suspense or Inner Sanctum program. That's where I also became acquainted with the living dead. Still remember the footsteps of the murdered husband in the basement coming up the stairs , the door creaking hope, and the screams of the wife and her liver as the see him. Don't know what the name of that one was but those old radio plays were better than TV or movies because you could create the scenery and characters in your mind. Low budget but effective.
