I grew up in a dark creepy old house at the top of a hill with a dirt floor cellar and with a long dirt driveway leading up to it. One Halloween night as we were getting ready to go out trick or treating, this same movie was playing on tv (3 channels days). When I saw Dracula dissolve, I was horrified and traumatized and had nightmares about it for many nights after that. Then in college I just happened to get to see it again and was finally able to make peace with how it effected me as a child.
Hey guys! Just as an aside, the reason Christopher Lee never really talks much as Dracula is that he really hated the lines that were written for him and he didn't have much say in them. He was supposed to have a lot more dialogue, but he just chose to play Dracula as more silent and use his physical presence on screen to make up for it. :)
Dear Matt and Craig, I don't know if you've seen it, but I have to recommend the 1928 silent film "The Crowd". The cinematography is breathtaking, especially a certain staircase shot, and the acting is very good even despite the fact you can practically hear the director yelling direction in their ears. One of the most of not the most realistic silent films ever made. Thank you guys so much, the enjoyment I get out of your show, it makes the good days richer and the bad days easier. Cheers!
Matt - I have been a huge fan of everything you've done for the last ten years, but when you said you didn't like "Army of Darkness" my foundation of respect and admiration was rocked a little.
Okay, on the "diminishing quality" comment - yes, mostly, but "Horror Express" is one of their best, and "Hound of the Baskervilles" is my personal favorite adaptation of that title. There are a couple of gems.
I just recently watched "Moon" (which you guys talked about in the "DarkStar" episode. It was awesome, i now see why you didn't want to ruin the ending. i did not see it coming. Thank You for the Recommendation
THIS IS THE MOVIE!!! O_O When I was little, maybe 8 or 9, I was home sick from school. I was home alone watching tv and I know it was October because Classic AMC ran only "scary" movies during the month. And I watched a vampire/Dracula movie that freaked me out while watching it, but it was daytime so I thought I was ok. But that night (and for A WEEK) I was terrified! I couldn't sleep or would have nightmares! I had no idea what it was until now. It was just "that vamp movie that scared me!"
15:30 I don't think it's _that_ amazing that someone who was stuck playing Dracula also got to play evil wizard and evil space wizard (who is also a count).
I saw "Bubba Ho Tep" a few days ago. It's a low budget horror/comedy with Bruce Cambel (from Evil Dead). An egyptian mummy is stealing the souls of patients in an old folks home. Two of the patients figure out whats happening and attempt to stop the mummy. One believes he is Elvis and the other believes he is President John Kennedy. The characters were pretty good together and Bruce was great as Elvis. So, decent movie, worth a watch. IMBD gave it a 7.1
There's a cracking Dracula book. Anno Dracula, by Kim Newman. It assumes a different ending to the Dracula novel, where he shakes off his hunters and returns to London, bites the Queen and sets up a vampire society. The story picks up years later in Bloody Red Baron, a WW1 era where flying vampires are used instead of biplanes.
This is by far the greatest thing on youtube. I've been looking forward to the Halloween episode. I've watched every episode a dozen times or more. I love it. Thank you guys for entertaining us.
I'm surprised you guys couldn't think of Lord Summerisle when naming Christopher Lee roles. Apparently it was his personal favorite even though much of his work in "The Wicker Man" ended up on the cutting-room floor.
"Lady in the Water" is one of those movies that you have to just sit back and enjoy for what it is. Sure, the story is confusing, and Shyamalan's character is self-indulgent on more than one level, but I still found it to be entertaining somehow.
I'm always flabbergasted when this show tops itself in quality, and in this case, you guys really pushed the envelope on how terrific this show can be. Keep up the good work! I know this show will only continue to get more fantastic.
Seen it: Zulu if you haven't seen it you should watch it as it has Michael Caine in his first major role so you would get to finish your Alfred trinity and it's one of my favourite films.
WOW...best welcome to the basement EVER!! and I don't just say that because I love horror and Dracula! Have you see Stoker? its a newer movie, starring Nicole kidman, and I forget who else offhand. its a must see in my opinion. you NEED to watch this movie!
I loved this video alot :) I watched James Rolf's review of this movie last week, but you guys go into more depth about the film itself and the story, and combining the two reviews made this movie so much more awesome
I wait out of principle, but I really don't need to wait to like any of these videos. I'm pretty sure I'd be completely safe just hitting the like button as soon as the page loads.
Awesome costume choices guys :) Especially Ernesto.... Have the two of you ever seen the 1973 cult-ish horror, Theater of Blood. According to his daughter [in her father's biography], this was Vincent Price's favorite movie to have made. This film is a dark, and at times hilarious pairing of b-movie gore and Shakespeare, as well as being a very cathartic viewing experience for actors, or anyone who has spent time under the thumb of critics. Thanks for another wonderful episode :)
Wow, my comment made it for the second time! Now i actually love American Psycho and even made a video about this movie. This is truelly the masterpiece of adaptation, just as Matt said. Also i would like to know, guys, how do you feel about this whole idea of new Star Wars trilogy. I'm very excited about them, but sometimes i 'm asking myself: Do we really need these movies?
Have you watched American Splendor, the biography of Harvey Pekar? The mix of Pekar himself along with the fictionalized scenes was very effective in bringing out the real character of Pekar as opposed to most biographies that just turn into a series of events that don't illuminate the essence of the central figure.
Have you seen The Great Race? Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon do every kind of slapstick you can think of, including Coyote and Roadrunner-style inventions and a giant pie fight.
Have you seen "In Search of a Midnight Kiss?" Its an Independent Rom-Com shot in black and white, I went into it with no clue about the film and I loved every minute of it
Have you seen the spanish version of the Bela Lugosi Dracula? The script is the same, but the actors, and directors choices for shots made that version so much better. Definitely worth a watch if you're familiar with the original.
I laughed so much diring this episode I nearly peed on the couch! You're a brilliant comedy team as well as film critics/anylists. Thanks for making a chronically depressed gal so happy. I am now going to rewatch after I go buy some Depends!
Have you guys seen "Lady in the Water" by Shyamalan? I found it to be quite amusing in how archetypes are deliberately named toward the end and I love the soundtrack.
Man, i only recently found your channel and i've found every speck of content really entertaining! Going to be marathoning this shit tonight methinks :D
So, I was one hundred percent prepared to give you guys a thorough chewing-out over recommending Observe & Report and saying it got a bad reception due to comparisons to Paul Blart: Mall Cop, because after watching O&R, I felt I had to give PB:MC a go as well... not as bad as I was expecting it to be; not great, but it had its moments.
In regards to your conversation about Dracula's few lines, you guys would be shocked to watch the later movies starring Christopher Lee as Dracula. He barely speaks at all. A lot of people see it as the animal side of the vampire not talking, but legend holds that Lee hated the dialogue and was tired of the typecasting, thus refused to speak.
"and we want to get loaded...and we wanna have a good time!". That was used in simon pegg and nick frosts new film, The worlds end, go see it, its pretty cool!
Hey guys, Have you seen the 2010 film Monsters? I found it to be a very touching piece rather than the cold sci-fi/horror I was expecting to see. I discovered later that the director shot nearly the entire movie with a crew of 7 or less and created all of the special effects on his personal computer! Amazing! Seen it?
"Show him to his quarters". For a minute there my mind made me give that phrase a different meaning. An Anne Rice take on vampires meaning if you get what I, um, mean..
I know all that. Just because I remark on something doesn't mean I don't understand it. And I wasn't making some kind of value judgement on Tod Browning's Dracula, just contrasting it with the Hammer one.
Dracula dies like a chump in this version. His enemy is running for the window where sunlight comes in - AND DRACULA STANDS THERE WATCHING. If he had had a box of popcorn, he would’ve been munching on it wondering what was going to happen.
Agreed 100% on Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness. It seems like most people like Army of Darkness the best, but to me it just went all out wacky and lost the balance Evil Dead 2 maintained so well.
You guys don't clearly understand the Bela Lugosi Dracula if you say that they're at time just standing like statues. The reason why they stood like statues was because Hollywood was coming out of the silent film era and there was still some awkward transitions from dragged out silent scenes to dialogue and action which would make films move faster.
Two questions for Seen It: One. Have you seen Mel Brooks' parody Dracula, Dead And Loving It? It's really funny in my opinion! Two. Speaking of Christopher Lee, have you seen Mio In The Land Of Faraway, based on the book by Astrid Lindgren? It also stars a very young Christian Bale.
The Man Who Would Be King is something I recommend for you guys to fulfill your lack of Michael Caine :D. It's a very interesting film and also includes Sean Connery as well.
Repeating what ShrekOnlce's basically said: James Rolfe mentioned in his Monster Madness review that Christopher Lee hated his lines, so refused to say them.
FUCK YES HORROR OF DRACULA!!!! I finally watched the entire Hammer/Christopher Lee Dracula series a couple of weeks ago, and it's fucking FANTASTIC - although my favorite would probably be either "Dracula Has Risen From the Grave" or "Satanic Rites of Dracula" Also, the Hammer Dracula movies have *amazing* titles.
Hi Matt, actually Dracula is appearing also in the book in just about 1 third of it. Yes he is the main threat, but you have to see him as the one pulling the strings rather from afar than acting on his own. This attributes his vile cunningness. In addition, the book has covered everything, as you already saw in this version, the very animalistic and sexual being of the vampire and the other characters depicted throughput (criticizing the Victorian Age.).Enough smartassery, keep up the good work
you guys should do Day of the Dead, its one of the best movies of all time....bloody amazing! To celebrate the new season of Walking Dead that coming in the next few days. It would be a pretty uneventful of Halloween if you skip out on it.
