When a wealthy stockbroker hires a rough builder to renovate the wine cellar underneath his country house, the two men fall out with chilling consequences.
"Bricks" by Neville Pierce
More About "Bricks":
A tense thriller about wealth, wine and the art of bricklaying, BRICKS updates Edgar Allan Poe's classic revenge tale ‘The Cask of Amontillado’ for the age of austerity and features an original score by David Julyan (MEMENTO, INSOMNIA, THE PRESTIGE). Rich stockbroker William (Blake Ritson, DA VINCI'S DEMONS) hires rough builder Clive (Jason Flemyng, THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON) to renovate his wine cellar. The two men couldn’t be more different: William is rich and refined; Clive is tough and uncouth. But in the shadowy cellar they find common ground… At least at first.

I love the modern day allegorical spin of this film. You have the man who obviously has everything, but rather than lift his fellow man up he wants to keep the other one trapped in his place, so he can never reach the others level. We still live in an aristocracy, veiled in a thin cloth of freedom.

This considerably streamlines the Edgar Allan Poe story that inspired it, but it still handles the reversal of power between them nicely. It's interesting that in this version they made it a class conflict thing, where in the original it's more about false friendship between somebody who is more ascendantly wealthy, and another whose wealth and power have declined. Having one of them poison the other also allows the story to move along very quickly, instead of having them one strategically drink the other under the table over a long evening.

This short was one of the best I’ve ever seen even though I knew from the beginning where it was going. It was the perfect way to put a modern twist on a classic and legendary horror story.

Please, English movie industry, why do you only know one German name. "Hans" is very outdated, you'll rarely find a person under the age of 60 with that name. Be brave, try it, use other German names. Like Felix, Tim, Jonas. A name that's equally old, but still in use is Karl. Or Carl (meaning "beloved/man"). An old name that's not often used, but way better than Hans is "Wilhelm" (meaning "the determined protector/the determined" and was also used by kings). Wolfgang is a very old German male name, means "walking with Wolves". Alfons, means "eager to fight". We have many, many more. I know, "it's to know it's German" quickly. But it's 60 years ago German. You can't be stuck in the past forever.

Do you know when Poe lived?
@CreepyLair
@CreepyLair 4 месяца назад
@@michaelking8391 It's a modern adaptation. They have jackets with _zippers._ Made popular when Edgar Allan Poe was long dead, if you had any doubts left. It's no secret the English movie industry _always_ uses "Hans" and "Düsseldorf". If they love the ü so much, they can stick to Düsseldorf, but Hans is just incredibly outdated.
@michaelking8391
@michaelking8391 4 месяца назад
@@CreepyLair you are correct that it is a rather modern adaptation, however, there is still intended ambiguity as to what time it is, to keep the atmosphere and the characters authentic. Aber bezüglich Hans hast du Recht :)
@CreepyLair
@CreepyLair 4 месяца назад
@@michaelking8391 In my personal perception, it's just an average 20th century wine vault with characters that just tried to act boasting and timid, only to switch it for the plottwist later. The flyer/card of the German vineyard is also modern. •whispers• movie industry, get past ww II names and ww II knowledge, it's dated But thanks for giving me new possible insights to look at it. Have a nice day :)

Pretty tough to top Poe's tale or the film short with Vincent Price & Peter Lorre & though this doesn't even really come close it was good . Not very original as we know right from the start what will be the final ending . Pales in comparison to the old film & story but hey it's an adaptation of sorts. I'll have to stick with Poe's Cask of Amontillado.
