That’s a smart horse. He tried to lift it over, couldn’t reach, tried to toss by gently throwing his head to the side, tried to step on the fence to be taller, got it stuck between the top wire and mesh and pulled it back out, then decided to just run a little and launch it. Glad he was able to figure out how to get the ball outside the pen to a buddy. Sorry the elk was being a bit aggressive/curious chasing the horse by the fence when he’s running towards the elk as a fight response, the little make up kiss/sniff was cute. We have wild elk interact with pastured cows and horses and they all act like a herd. I mean, they will divide up separately into groups, but grazing the mingle together. This elk thought she was protecting something, as evidenced by the other elk that weren't bothered and seem used to having the horse near. Bull elk lose their antlers in spring so I don't think it's a bull protecting the cows. It could have shed earlier, tho, so that's possible. Might have been concerned about the ball. Hard to say.

The colt is enjoying the company. Although some comments suggest that the elk wants to fight, I'm not so sure. Elk 'play fight' in this way with each other, with deer, and even with smaller animals. The elk could have easily jumped into the colt's pen if it had wanted to. Their legs are like springs. But . . . no horse should ever have to live alone. They are herd animals and need other equines for companionship and to feel secure. In some countries it's illegal to make a horse live without another horse for companionship. If this colt doesn't have equine companion that are out of view in this video, something should be done about that. Buy another, board one, or even borrow a buddy for it - being sure to not take another horse away from its own buddy in the process.
@Punkini
@Punkini Год назад
They do play fight, but this doesn’t look like play fighting. I don’t usually see herd animals play fight with members of other herds, and especially not with herds of other species (and ones they’ve never seen before). This really just looks like a defensive behavior from the elk. It wouldn’t jump over the fence and put itself in danger if it didn’t need to, it’s just trying to warn the horse not to come any closer or else. Animals typically give warnings and don’t usually just randomly start a fight since fights have a pretty good chance at getting yourself killed.

@@l.dellarovere914 No, he's right the Horse was clearly engaging playfully and indeed sharing! Unfortunately the anti-social uncivilized wild Animal just wanted to fight. That's what living in California feels like. I am loving, accepting, I celebrate and cherish others,. I just want to play. But am surrounded by uncivilized people who just want to fight.

The elk is free. If a horse is in a large pasture it won't play with a ball either.

The horse was trying to be nice by offering the ball to the Elk. Once the ball was flung over the fence, the Elk jumped. Just wanted to square off with the horse instead. Adorable 🙂 video.

That’s a good idea to put a short rope on the Jolly Ball. My horse loves them and has gone through many. The horse and elk are “playing” different games, it would be cool if the elk was interested in the ball too. I have seen elk frolicking, it I’m not exactly sure if there was any frolick in that elk. The horse was definitely having fun.

twice, over the years, we had Shetland foals that played with fawns - the adult horses stood at one side of the field and the adult deer stood on the other side of the field - all of the adults from both species watched without interfering with the play of the little ones - something never to be forgotten - of course the "Experts" claim that there is no interplay between the wild and tame animals of different species - glad you had the chance to enjoy a similar experience

The horse was adorable and wanted to play. The elk didn't seem to understand and was more interested in the horse than the ball. It's a good thing that fence was there because I don't think the horse would have been safe otherwise. I can't tell if the elk was trying to assert dominance or mistook the horse for a weird-looking elk, but it sure wasn't playing. You could see the elk's confusion and hints of fear as it'd back away and keep a constant eye on the horse. It looked a bit tense. At times, it looked like it might be a display of excitement, but the more I watched, the more I realized the elk wasn't playing.

Yep horse is trying to play...Elk either thinks the horse is trying to kill the ball thingy and sees the ball and/or the horse as a threat or it's after the horse thinking the horse is being aggressive to the ball (treating the ball like it's a small baby to be defended). The elk is not playing. The horse certainly is.
