Sadly the horse was killed after they landed. Those horses are treated more like commodities and equipment than living creatures. The owners determined it was better for the insurance coverage to essentially declare it “totaled” to cover the costs of the fuel dump and flight delay than to try and ”repair” it. 😢

I read an article saying that the injured horse was in a stall block locked in behind other stall blocks. The incident horse tried to crawl over the top of it's stall and got hung up with the front legs in a stall of a different stall block, and the hind legs in it's own stall. The other horses had to be removed so the front stall blocks could be removed before the onboard vets could attend to the incident horse.@@burnn3

I guess a 747 can handle nearly a ton of loose unit continually shifting their cg about...? Could that have become an issue if it had got too far aft or would it have been all within limits?
@Elbert_Heather
@Elbert_Heather 10 месяцев назад
I second this question. We all likely recall the catastrophic failure experienced by a 747 performing a high angle take off from Bagram claiming all souls. The issue as I recall was due to a Stryker or Abrams coming loose from the floor lashings and shifting aft consequently stalling and crashing the aircraft. Since I don't know the exact horse conversion ratio I would guess 1 would not do it but 30 would. The 747 had full tanks and the fire cloud was massive.
@n003lb
@n003lb 10 месяцев назад
@@Elbert_Heather a typical horse weighs around half a ton (1000 lbs), while an Abrams weighs close to 70 tons (140,000 lbs). A Stryker weighs about 20 tons (40,000 lbs), so no, a single horse moving about the cabin will not have the same effect. I'm sure it probably made flying the plane a bit interesting, given the trim probably would need adjustment as the horse moved, but also, it's possible the animal was contained in a smaller area of the hold and didn't have access to the rest of the aircraft. 40 horses would equal the effect of a Stryker moving around, but I think 40 horses are a fair bit bigger than a Stryker (though I've never seen one in person, so I may be wrong) and if you've got 40 free horses in an airplane, your in pretty serious ####. Also, pretty sure it was a Stryker or similar AFV that caused the Bagram crash. I don't think a 747 has the capability to load an M1 tank, but again, I could be wrong. I didn't know they could load Strykers honestly, thought they needed a C-17 or similar for that.

Dumped fuel can be sucked in The engine where can could ignite in the compressor stage in the engine, thus causing massive engine damage, or end up in the cabin because cabin air Is bleed out from the compressor stage of engine, thus can be hazardous for passegger health

@janethouse1779 10 месяцев назад
Sadly yes, a CNN article actually described what happened. The horse spooked and in trying to jump out of the stall, got it's front legs over the door but not it's back legs. They couldn't solve the issue in flight due to space, and they tried to save the horse once on the ground, but due to it's injuries it was euthanized. So if that news is indeed true, it's a sad ending.

It would waste more fuel to do so than the occasional dumping by planes that have to dump fuel to make a maximum weight landing due to an in-flight emergency. You would have to carry thousands of extra pounds in beefed up landing gear required to increase the maximum landing weight to the maximum takeoff weight. You pay in fuel for every pound of weight you fly.@@sandordugalin8951

@VASAviation
@VASAviation 9 месяцев назад
What is your knowledge in aviation to state such accusation? Fuel dumping is totally permitted above 6000ft anywhere. Fuel dissipates at high altitudes, sprayed so nozzled that is nearly a gas and fades into the the rest of the gases of the atmosphere. This airplane was doing it at 22,000 feet. Here's your learning for today, and it's free.
@cnvi08
@cnvi08 9 месяцев назад
So much miss information in the media regarding the story. Stupid reporters that don’t understand aviation should not be reporting on aviation. You can’t have a 1000 pound animal running around the cargo hold as it can literally kill the airplane with weight/balance shifting around. Can bring your plane down in a second. That was the serious problem not that a horse got loose so let’s laugh about it. FUBAR.
