In this video, I discuss horse riding positions tips for your Arms & Hands. This is the final Part 4 of my rider position series. I created this to help you avoid the same frustration I faced as a beginner looking for ways to improve my rider position.
Arm & Hand position is the last area I am covering because it is reliant on the other 3 Parts I covered. Having a great pelvic, leg, shoulder, & neck position will be a big help, but your hand & arm position can take your position a step further. We use our hands a lot during riding, and just a minor adjustment could be all the difference! In this, I discuss some muscle groups involved, common mistakes, and what correct Arm and Hand position looks like. Whether you are a beginner or advanced in your riding, these tips should help towards achieving a great Arm & Hand position :)
Hope this series was helpful 😊

This is a useful one. I struggle keeping a hold on my reins and they often end up slipping through one side or the other. It's interesting to hear that it could be to do with a weaker base so will give those exercises a go. Thank you.

Great teacher 😍❤️ having each video to target a specific part of the riding position along with showing the wrong gestures helped me a lot to correct my mistakes and have a better riding position so thank you 😍😘😘

Thank you for this 4 part series! I am a rookie rider who has some years on him but wanted to learn how to ride before being put out to pasture. LOL. I've been struggling with having a relaxed posting with my trot and I know it is due to not having proper form. You very nicely broke everything down and showed the areas that I need to focus on to improve my form. I also found your exercise tips extremely helpful. So thanks again.

Thanks so much for this - your really clear explanations and pointing out which muscle groups are involved in each section make everything easy to completely understand. Your explanation of ‘forward hands’ has finally helped me to grasp this after never really getting the ‘pushing forward’ concept. Thank you so much!!🙏😍🤩

Thank you for this series! And thank you for the extra images on the muscle groups and the wrists, etc. I took lessons when I was 10 briefly but had to quit bc of family finances. I am now 34 and just took my first lesson as an adult last week. I was highly discouraged to learn that, amazingly, my body has changed drastically since I was 10 haha. I have been working on strengthening and stretching all week and, though I know it will take me years to become proficient, I hope to notice some increase in my physical comfort level at my second lesson tomorrow. I have been devouring your videos, thank you for your encouraging words!

A wonderful series thank you so much. I found all of it helpful and I guess when i feel something is feeling awkward and therefore not doing it correctly I tend to over compensate which I then lean away from doing other positions correctly. What this series did was to show me how that it all goes hand in hand and strengthening as well stretching whilst out of the saddle can go along away. So thank you for that. BTW Happy holiday season and I hope the new year brings good things to you, preferably COVID free

Great channel, I just watched the 4 parts after watching some of your others. I am also now thinking (after watching your other vid) that when I ask my horse to turn, I am using my leg but not really dropping the weight in my seat bone. Thanks for the clear explanations, they are a big help!

I have difficulty with the actual positioning of my arms because they're kind of short. At lessons I'm often told to place my hands more forward (over the withers) at which point my arms feel almost straight. How do you address arm position for different sized people? I do so appreciate your explanation and diagrams of what muscles are being talked about. I can tell you the muscles and ligaments in a horse, but not a human. ;)

Hi😀 I’m so glad you found the video helpful. I often recommend adjusting the reins more through The riders fingers rather than their arms. Doing this can help you to lengthen and shorten your reins without changing your arm position. takes a little practice but I found it to be an effective way to keep a more stable contact🐴

I have a question? I have a horse who recently everytime I tighten the girth attempts to bite me but he dosent try to bite my mom when she tries (I do it slowly) I dont tighten it all the way till I get to the arena then I actually tighten it in the arena and he dosent care at all ? Vet said it wasn't ulcers or anything?

Hi Megan 😊 Thanks for reaching out😀 With out seeing you and your horse it is difficult for me to give you personalized advice. If you like you can submit a video on my website and I could help you come up with a game plan on how to solve this issue 🐴 JShorsemanship.com

May be a silly question but I'm wondering, since my coach always asks me to shorten the reins, how I can shorten the reins without stretching my arm all the way out and thus tilting my body position?

How do you know if you have contact with the bit?
@JSHorsemanship
@JSHorsemanship 4 года назад
Hi 😊 You will know you have good contact when you have a horse who is relaxed and seeking your hands. The most important thing to remember is that contact is all about getting your horse to seek forward to your hands by getting them to engage more over the back. It is achieved through your seat and leg more than through your hands. Every horse has a different feeling and it takes time to develop good contact. Having a knowledgeable instructor watch you ride is an invaluable tool in improving this skill.

why are you sitting so far back in the saddel?
@JSHorsemanship
@JSHorsemanship 3 года назад
Hi😊 The saddle and horse in this video are owned by a student of mine who is much shorter than me and very petite. Being tall I tend to want to sit a little too far back. This is something I will definitely be thoughtful about in the future💕
