I like how he took his time, spoke calmly the whole time, and didn't over-react to the horse's behavior. He was steady and kind. I appreciate the reminder to use one rein at a time.

OMG its a moving black monster and its gonna get me!! I only laugh cause my 13yr qh gelding will sometimes do the same thing....I rather deal with a bolting and spooky horse then a bucking and rearing one....pretty horse btw

My gelding is terrified of pretty much everything but usually will listen to me. The other day though as I was coming up to goat pens(he passes them at least weekly but is always on guard nevertheless) a bird flew out and scared him so badly he dropped to the ground before jumping up and racing forward a few steps. I stopped him gently, reassured him, and continued forward. Unfortunately there was a box by the goat pens(there has never been one before) and after having already been spooked he refused to walk past the box without me on the ground. Normally I'd be a bit more adamant about him continuing despite his fear even if it's at a crawl but I was between barbed wire and an electric fence so I ended up having to lead him past before getting back on. He snorted the entire way and made sure I was between him and the killer box. I'll have to keep this idea in mind for the next time my gelding is threatened by a box.

Love the long rein and focussed but relaxed attitude! Following the herd at the end is something every horse needs to build confidence with anything scary that moves...whether it's cattle, bikes, tractors, or whatever. Nice video! Curious why you chose a huge herd for introduction instead of starting with just a few cows at first.

+Jennifer R. Povey That was the thing he would do 180 at so we did a video on it, other than that he is pretty solid on the trails and now is really good with the cattle

My mare is short, and strong in the neck, and she pulls my arm off trying to get to the grass while riding. I have neck probs and need to get her softer and respecting me. After 7 years of NH, she has a toolbox full of tools, but she is dominant and fearful at the same time. Her latest bugaboo is trying to get her to step down into a ditch that is full of mud or water. She keeps wanting to jump it. It's like she thinks it is full of snakes or quicksand or something. I am working to get her desensitized for her first big trail ride and parade nxt. month. "Parade-ready" would be a great video. "Ditches and creeks" would be another great one, but I am going to look on your site to see if you have one already.
@Marcoeful
@Marcoeful 8 лет назад
+KK Icons So you need to get her super soft in the neck to where if you just think about picking up that rein she is already flexing her neck on the left and right rein, As far as going across the ditches let her jump and keep taking here across as many times as it takes for her to finally take a step into it, It could be 20 or 50 times but she will get tired of jumping the ditch, as far as the parade you can always use Palms ear plugs for horses, it dose not keep them from hearing but it will muffle the sound a lot for parades and stuff like that, I do have good video's on for desensitizing your horses,
@KKIcons
@KKIcons 8 лет назад
She is soft about flexing, until she is making a beeline for where she wants to go. But will work on that. thx, great idea about the ear plugs! I think she is more of a visual spooker, but that will help for things like firecrackers, blanks, sirens, etc. I think I will delegate the ditch-jumping job to the kids, but we will get it done. I got 15 of the jumps done already...then I got off and got her to walk into it from the ground.

I just kept his nose on the cattle, if he went left I would pick up the right rein and if he went right I pick up on the left rein and keep his nose on what it was he was trying to bolt from which in this case was the cattle

Face the fear, a good saying. My horse spooked at large boulders of all things, lol, had a Prarie chicken take off right under his nose, he could have cared less, could shoot off his back, basically do anything or be around anything, but when it came to lrg rocks or boulders, omg, they were out to get him, lol.

My last horse would spin like a reiner, drop her head and go. I got to where I could read her and stop her usually but those sneaky rabbits would sometimes surprise her and in turn I'd miss the cue. Never came off though, I think the worst one was when I was coming home from a trail and out of the corner of her eye she saw a tumble weed being thrown against the barn, that was fun.

my horse bolted off with my mom and she doesnt know much about riding. If he doesnt want to do something, he will start bucking and rearing up, but when its not that bad, he will throw up his head real quick and not listen. He does not listen well to backing up. He takes a lot of preasure to make him go, but i hate spurs. He makes me loose my confidence!

I had an issue on a trail where a riderless,frightened Horse came around a 90 degree turn almost running into my horse and I. My horse reared, spun, and bolted, passing the runaway. I pretty much had to let him run it out, because I wasn't able to slow him until we got within sight of his herd. I did stay on, even though he ran on wet bush trails, as well as a sudden turn onto asphalt for a bit. Thankfully he was barefoot! He slid but never quite went down. What could I have done differently in the case of a surprise "attack"?
@Marcoeful
@Marcoeful 8 лет назад
+Magic-cat Therrien I would teach your horse how to do a one rein stop, in the case you were in you would have to spiral your horse in to a one rein stop and you would have to wait to find a good place to do it, Things you can do so that does not happen again is teach your horse how to control him self when things get out of control, I am going to be doing a video on that type of training here in the next Month

Great video Mike. My welsh section A is blind in one eye and find he is very spooky. Is this common with this problem and is it something that i can work on to overcome the issue? He is fantastic in traffic and tractors but find the problem is when he is in an open field.

Good clip! I have a 4 yr old reining mare who has spent most of her life in arenas. ive just started working cattle on her etc. She is in the bridle and one handed. but sometimes something can give her a scare and she tenses up. she tends to ignore the bit even if I just try and flex one way. i haven't pulled as she is normally really light. She has damage done to her tongue from the breaker so I took her out of the snaffle once she got light and responsive. any ideas on how to calm her when it feels like she isnt use to the curb on the trials? she is normally really laid back. thanks!
@Marcoeful
@Marcoeful 8 лет назад
+Charlotte Fairley As far as getting her calm I would do a lot of desensitizing with her and I would do the one rein flex until she know it better then any other horse so she will flex under any situation

My 17yr old pony, has this little tuck and flip thing she does with her shoulder. When riding her, especially asking her to turn, and when she doesn't get her way, she'll either bolt, or she'll turn but then tuck her shoulder, throwing almost any rider off. She does this mainly near the fences or gates, throwing the rider into them. Got any tips??
@xxsnowbell7346
@xxsnowbell7346 8 лет назад
I suggest doing some flat work on her, keep her trotting for a long time and don't let her stop. Then by no fences do a gentle small Turing round a corner repeat this action for a while soon get closer to the fences. If she bolts , this will sound crazy but it's a good method , keep pushing her on don't let her stop cantering /galloping as she bolts , after a while she will get tired and realise there is no point . Hope I help!

Mike what do you think of doing a 360 . I am still new to riding and maybe my response time is slow so I let the horse turn away and kept turning him to face it a 360 . It's only occurred twice but it seemed to work

I always like to keep there nose on what there scared of. If some horse spin away form what they are scared of then there is chance of them bolting and running away. So I always do my best to keep there nose on what they are scared of
