Ive been learning guitar for a year now, my son played this song in the car and I said 'i reakon I could play that!' he challenged me to learn it and thanks to your video I learnt it in 10 minutes and impressed him no end,, so thank you!! :) Xx
Haven't picked up my six string in years until today. Never did learn much about playing it but I found your video's and I can now play this song! Thank You so much Lauren. You are by far the best I've seen teaching this six string thing!
This is the best video I've found so far for this song! I learned essentially the same chords and strumming pattern from multiple other videos but I couldn't figure out why it didn't sound right when I played it. Well, now I know it's because of the swing beat. After just a little bit of trying to strum this way, I can already hear it starting to sound like the actual song! Thank you!
After years of trying to learn on and off, I found this video and made more progress in a half hour than I ever have before. The way you explain everything just makes so much sense. Thank you so much for this!
Your lessons are so incredible and intuitive! You helped me pick up the guitar so fast that my mother bought herself a guitar so we could jam together. 🖤
Just found your channel Yesterday , I been playing for about 5 years for my second go around and have been frustrated with my play and Strumming , you have showed me some moves that Ive been trying for a long time and now they look easier than before . PS I just turned 75. Thanks Bob
I've been trying to learn guitar while in isolation from covid. I love this song and with your tuition I've made more progress than I could ever have imagined. Thank you Lauren absolutely brilliant.
I've been learning the first 7 chords & feel I need to make progress with strumming now, so as to make some better sounds. I a admire your style of teaching, it's very calming & down to earth, you're a great lady who makes it possible to relate to your way of teaching. Thank you very much indeed, I've found it difficult in the past but recently invested in a more expensive guitar, far better sound too.. I just need strum better, then look on your website for songs I know, I feel that will help me improve.. Start safe & happy Lauren
You r AMAZING dear Lauren. I was following numerous 🎸 teachers. Now U replaced everyone. How do U make such complicated lessons so simple. Thank U lady. 🙏🎸🙏.
My first time having a guitar, a gift from my niece. It’s a dream come true to me. Still practicing this video and so happy playing it. Very easy to learn. Thank you so much Lauren. Following all your video. More power!
i wrote new lyrics to city of new orleans by arlo guthrie. very satirical with absolutely no profanity. so a quick lesson on city of new orleans would be wonderful. you are a great teacher and very easy to follow along with. please keep on!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lauren, thank you for teaching me how to play this song so that it sounds close enough to the original that people will recognize it and not say "What was that?". I have no idea how I found your channel, but I am so glad I did. Your lessons are so easy to follow and understand. I finally think I can get to a place in my guitar playing where I will be able to play for friends and they will actually know what I'm playing. I am subscribed and I click the Like button on every video of yours that I watch. In fact, I click it first, and then watch, because I KNOW I'm going to like it. 🙂
Hi just found you here I’m 75 yr and never played before ,I’m just learning chord now but not very fast moving from one to another , l like your vidéo I’m country music fan ,hope you can help
Great lesson and played tonight with the live recording for my wife and she said I nailed it. I palm mute between the upstrokes of the D6/9 which totally is what is going on in the recording.
I learnt this as a beginner from a different tutorial and while knowing the chords and the strumming pattern order, I never had the swing element and that is what felt missing! Glad I came across your tutorial as it made it much easier to implement the "swing". xxxxxx
The reason people can't "'shuffle" as you say is because they don't listen to enough swing. The best rock musicians from the 60s and 70s listened to jazz and the blues.
YAAY... thank you, as a beginner I'm really excited to try this. I've been wanting to play this song! Your explanations and breakdown of strumming patterns is fantastic. 🙏❤️
Make the most of it Susannah. It's surely only a matter of time before someone comes up with a name for the horse. And whist there at it they may even reveal Who Let the Dogs out.
I did it! It is a beginning but hé...Just started 😚. Gave my first show to my husband with this song. My first song on an instrument ever. Thank you, Lauren.
Also my first song. When I learned this song last year I had just watched your strumming video, added the advise and was so impressed I videoed myself playing and put it on my facebook page! Thanks!
Pretty close, but it's more like this: Em goes; bass, down-up, bass, up-down-up. Then the D6/9/F# goes; bass, up-whack, up-whack, up-down-up. The "bass" is just a down strum on the 6th string. The "whack" is when you use the blade of your strumming hand to silence the strings. It's strange at first, but sounds just like the recording, once you have it down. It's the first song I taught myself and the first one I show anybody else how to play. Love your channel!
Out of contless RU-vid lessons of this song this is the first one that made me make sense of it... I'm finally STARTING to sound a bit like the record. 😅
Astonishing how such an apparently easy two chords song can represent a challenge for beginners like me just because of its accents and pauses... Thank you for this awesome explanation!
I've spent two days with this lesson and making some good progress. I'm still working on nailing down the rhythm but I'm able to shift between chords without looking! And they sound good!
I used to have a Guitar but no longer do so i couldn't play along with the tutorial but still, I enjoyed watching the video till the very end as it's very clear and easy to follow. I'll make sure to re-visit your channel when i buy a guitar. Liked and subscribed for sure! :)
very nice , also my first song but i learned it Em D-DU-DU-DU & D6/9/F# D-U-U-U-DU , so on second part another up strum compared to yours, i guess depends on teacher a bit too. Anyway thanks for sharing as i appreciated all version and hints and your way teaching resonates with me a lot.
Great stuff Lauren, I have been teaching this classic chestnut to total beginners for years, but none of them can ever get into the real America strumming, so I will try showing the more enthusiastic lads this pattern and I will gladly put them onto your video, Ps, I love your enthusiasm for teaching, great to see some one really enjoying their job.Not many do . Ger mooney-guitarman in Galway
Best explanation I've seen on the strumming pattern. I knew how the pattern kind of went but was having trouble putting it and that swing type rhythm together. After your explanation it clicked. Feels so easy now that I feel kinda dumb for not getting it sooner 😄. Been trying to teach myself guitar for a little over a month now. Grateful to people like you who are willing to share their knowledge. Just found your channel today and subbed.
Even better than the first lesson of this song: TWO THUMBS UP for once again simplifying how to play a great tune, you are TRULY THE BEST GUITAR TEACHER I have encountered HANDS DOWN!
Slow beginner (level2), slowly learning to add the shuffle and some "spice" to this song. Sometimes it works, other times, most of times (!) I get confused and lose the rhythm! I know, it will come with practice :-) robert (from Italy)
Thanks Lauren, there are so many video tutorials on You Tube with some certainly better than others. I guess the trap is to try and start playing songs too soon and then you get frustrated when you can't play well enough or change chords quickly enough. I think I was also trying to learn too many chords at once and when I had to use 4 fingers for some chords I almost threw it in! Really glad I found your tutorials which are taught at just the right level for beginners. Small things I guess, but just being able to play and sing along to 'Horse with No Name - wow, very exciting! Need to work hard on my strumming, but liked your easy strumming lesson which has been very helpful. I'll keep tuning in. Regards, Peter from Adelaide, Australia.
Hi Miss Lauren, I see you brought back the TNMT, love it. this is the first song I learned in 12/2020. when I started learning guitar, thank you for all you do.
Hi Lauren , This is by far the best way to learn , have tried in the past a couple of times but but your way is the easiest especially for us old folks , at least i can hear results after a few short lessons , thank you . I just have to overcome one problem , the pick keeps loosening up and flopping around in my fingers , is there any tricks ? thanks Bill C
Bill, there is a balance to holding your pick. You have to hold it firm enough to prevent what you're talking about, but loose enough to not make your strumming sound bad. I do recommend Dunlop Max Grip picks for beginners. 0.60mm or 0.77mm
This doesn't sound *quite* like the version of the song I know. The frustrating thing is I can't figure out what the difference is, either, just that it's a bit off. My best guess is that there's two strums somewhere I'm expecting three. I realized I should add that I'm not being at all negative, I really appreciate your videos. It's just bugging me hahaha.
Probably because I'm a single guitar player in the original song has multiple guitars in it. I also believe the original someone said might have been in drop d-tuning and we are doing this in standard tuning.
Lauren, thanks for putting this together. I've been playing on and off for some years but needed a refresher on strumming patterns. You instruction is clear and concise. :-)
@@LaurenBateman Honestly though, your videos are really the best I've seen. Plus you teach all the great oldies. I'm getting a new guitar kit soon ( Essentially a Gretsch white falcon hollow body) Putting vintage Nashville GFS pickups in it for the that vintage sound. (eventually hope to put TV Jones in it) Its going to get a workout in front of your videos :-)
The ocean is a desert with it's life underground And a perfect disguise above Under the cities lies a heart made of ground But the humans will give no love.... Who writes like this anymore? I love this song, I loved it when I was a kid, we used to put on skits to this song...(kids with hobby horses) 😂 And many others....🎶 Ah, to be young and unembarrassed.👀 Thanks Teach... 🍎
