Horses that get distracted in new places 

... my wife now takes me to the beach on a lead.. :(

Anyone whining about how this horse was totally calm coming off the trailer is the reason we have "problem horses". If you correct the issue before it becomes a problem, you never see the out of control horse dragging it's handler. Let him do this a few times with no correction and you're well on your way to a problem horse.

I loved it when he said "he stopped and sniffed the poo, she stopped and sniffed the poo" LOL and yes, the lesson is about respecting you and paying attention to you on the lead.

LOL "This is your husband, this is his hand, and there are bikini girls everywhere" LOL I train horses but I am always looking at videos just to see if anyone has a different view that is more effective and I am stealing that line from you. Because I am a girl a lot of women hire me to fix their "problem horses" and that is a perfect line love it!!!

This must be one of my most favorite horse training videos ever. I may not struggle with this with my horses, but maaan I had a good laugh about Warwick's "story" of the couple at the beach 😂😂😂

Half the people who are saying that 'horses aren't children, they shouldn't have to follow your every move' and 'this defeats the horses nature to be curious' have obviously never been to a horse show and had their horse almost topple you over because they're distracted by everything. Horses who get distracted don't perform well and arent focused on the task ahead of them. This was a very helpful and insightful video and I will be using these techniques on my horse when we start going to shows (I don't go to many shows because of this problem, and I didn't know the solution until now) Thankyou!!

That’s exactly how I trained my dog also... she learned to heel really fast and really learned to watch me... make em wrong in order to make em right... fast turns,etc. this is great training! This man is a super horseman!

Perfect... Boy have I made mistakes. Humility City all the way. Watching this makes me feel like I finally have a chance to be born again. You say embrace your mistakes, looking back makes me want to die!!!!!!! lol Ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's interesting to see your approach to this horse in 2013, to the one you'd use in 2020. ;) Your method is effective here but I'd say your current work is even better.

I watched this video for the first time a year ago and it really helped me with my horse. He was distracted, looking at everything around, and I just didn't realised that I made the same mistakes as the girl in the beginning of the video. I applied your advices and now my horse is all calm and peaceful when he arrives in a new place, paying attention to me and not leading me everywhere he wants to go and that's really pleasant.

I have had this issue with my mare at shows, but never really put much thought into the fact that she needs to have her attention on me regardless of being in a new place. I am going to put this method to use next show!

Warwick you gave a fantastic analogy in this video! Loved the owl head syndrome example related to husbands! Additionally, I completely agree with Jacquie Currie (see comment proceeding this one) & horse/dog training, as it can also apply to toddlers as one passes by a playground, toy store or candy shop! Life simplified the Warwick way is making my training sessions more successful (w/the exception of the hot girls on the beach).

I feel like this will be really helpful for me and my horse, can't wait to try it out! She gets nervous when someone watches us lunging or riding, so I hope this will keep her nerves down a bit

Brilliant, thank you. Watching the original handler was so useful - I watched and though '...maybe... she's not being a strong enough leader?'. I wasn't quite right but it was so good to see the before (original handler) and after (with Warwick) to understand better. I have a 'looky' horse so definitely going to adapt this on the ground and possibly under saddle in future, thank you :)

Horses already take in so much information as they walk along, that they don't need to be disrespectful and over-dramatic as they look around the property. They can be polite, paying attention to you and have a pretty amazing read on their surroundings. Teach the horse to have to some confidence from himself and the handler, saying 'This type of stuff doesn't warrant a big reaction' , and he'll learn he can 'multi-task'. Awareness of his handler and his surroundings. A wild horse doesn't walk all over it's lead mare or stallion just because they're seeing something new. Very good video and techniques as always.

How was the horse confused? It wasn't confused, it was uncertain about what was going to happen next, which meant it now had to focus on the handler. Great video as usual Warwick. Not in the least inappropriate!

Thanks for making this video it cleared some things in my mind plus I really enjoy it ;) If it's not to much to ask could you make some suggestion how to work with a truly calm horse? Sound like a silly question but I find it quite a problem. I try to be very accurate about timing with him but I find over time I need more pressure than used to. I'm looking for a way to say "Hey, I'm here. Pay attenuation!" before it escalates. He desensitizes quickly to everything (new objects on trail or while in round pen using a whip, quick movement, jumping) and goes for grass or if no food in sight he just stands preferably next to you. I would love to loose the bit with him as well but riding in halter a horse who is not alert doesn't work well. I find calming nervous horses is actually a lot easier :/

Im the typical back yard horse owner with 2 horses my problem is no one wants to be alone lol I can lead one or the other away and they're perfectly fine with me respectful attention is on me. But the one left behind is pitching a fit so bad I feel they're going to hurt them selves. I was debating getting a third. I have a Hanoverian and a very small mini, poning the mini could be a little rough on the mini lol

What about leading a nervous weanling. I just got a 9 month old and he is nervous about going new places. Either wants to be on top of me or tries running back to his pen. How do I get him over this?

just because a horse is dropped doesn't mean there drugged. My gelding hangs lose often.

I was wondering, my mare can be quite spooky at times. If I am leading her a she hear something (let's say in the bush) and she stops. Should I keep walking or should I let her look at it?

Tried this, my trainer saw me and she said "don't micromanage him, let him look around, he's naturally looky". Yeah, my horse is still a distracted dangerous animal :( now I'm at a new place and I do these drills endlessly and my horse still can't seem to focus on me

This works 4 me after about 15 mins of walking back and forth trying to get my horse's attention, but i have to redo it atleast 1 time every single day, it takes alot of time to get her to walk nice and calm beside/behind me and i have to redo it over and over and over again. Is there a way to ''teach'' her like maybe, i dunno, a cue or something where she know she's suposed to walk somewhere in comparability to me that she can remember for more than 5 minutes?

So, what about a horse that constantly whinnies at the show grounds and is badly buddy sour. Any Warwick video for that?
