Horseshoeing a Reining Horse

This horse's hooves had grown and needed trimmed but the shoes were still good to be used for another shoeing cycle (normally 6 to 8 weeks). Which is why I decided to reuse the shoes (aka "resetting"). The shoes being used on this horse are called "sliders." They are applied to the back feet of horses of certain disciplines and their basic function is to reduce traction to allow the horse to perform different maneuvers. This particular horse is a reining horse. I also put front shoes on this horse which I did not include in this video. Putting shoes on a horse does not hurt the animal when done properly.

Damn that horse is so used to this that he just lifted his big ol foot up when you got near. Shows how much he trusts and likes the whole process.

Never intended to find your videos, but your work is very nice to watch. Hard to find good, wholesome content on RU-vid these days. Also I like how you wear the camera upside-down on your head to give the viewers the perspective of watching from in front of you. Very cool, subscribed!👍

Very interesting to watch indeed. I have never seen shoes being re-used on regular changing intervals but if it works then great, saves the owner some money. Ours are worn down to less than half of their thickness after 8 weeks in winter (or around 6 in summer) and there is no way we could use them again.

They’re a step behind stacking pads on walking horses in terms of being terrible. Look how they lay over the frog? Pretty hard to clean out the frog properly with that kind of fit? I’ve seen a lot of elongated toes with these shoes too. They’re trash..

Huh i never knew the nails came out the sides and are then bent up. Makes sense tho cos when you clip the hoof back i guess it comes off andddd you dont risk jamming the nail into the horses feet 😅

I noticed a lot of hay on the ground underneath you while you are grinding horseshoes. It's probably not going to light on fire when the embers strike it. They will probably go out before they hit the ground. The hay is probably damp enough. Then one day it isn't and you burn the entire barn down, well, because dry hay moves fire a lot faster than you can move water. So, for everyone's safety, grind that shoe away from the hay. Just a suggestion from a guy who knows a guy who burned down a barn shoeing horses.

Now that I learned that thrush can be evident without black goo or smell now I'm noticing frogs and this horse is free of thrush and has a super healthy frog looks like. Question: to you bring in the heel branches on the medial sides to prevent them pulling a shoe or does it depend. For instance if a horse has a sheered heel on the medial side would you tight fit on the medial or give it a little expansion room?

Reining is a particular horse sport. I’m not sure why the slider shoes either, since I’m not really familiar with reining.
@questfire3028
@questfire3028 3 года назад
@@julesthecat9404 one of the showiest stunts for reining horses seems to be galloping fast as they can, then suddenly stopping. They have their weight on their back legs and slide to a stop. YT has videos if you want to see. I presume there’s less risk of injury if the shoes keep the sliding smooth, by being smooth and balancing the weight properly

Do you use the same nail holes when putting on the shoes? If so how would that hold the shoe firmly, especially for reining? Thanks!

As someone who will probably never touch a horse shoe i have a question. How many times can you refit a shoe on a horse?
@erica031012
@erica031012 4 года назад
Depends on wear of the shoe. Some horses need shoes for medical (hoof problems) and are on grass can use the same shoe at least twice (6 to 8 weeks between trims) or you can get a buggy horse that works on hard surfaces every day and has a hard time making it to 6 weeks.

Where's your steel plug for the pipe stand? That open pipe end looks like it could cause a bruise or etc somewhat easily. But I did enjoy watching your work. My dad always twisted the nail ends but I've seen many others use nippers just like you did. Preference? Or habit? Or "because my teacher did it that way?" 👍

Why do some horses get horseshoes and others don’t
@sophiejohnston2338
@sophiejohnston2338 4 года назад
Skip Baeless purpose of a horseshoe is to often protect the hoof wall, some disciplines require them for the horses safety. As an example if your horse has a harder landing the shoe prevents cracks. There is different types of shoes to fit your horses discipline.

If a horse is getting a lot of exercise they require them to not wear down their natural hoof too much or cause damage to them. Pet horses that aren’t ridden are less likely to have them. Where horses used for showing and riding get lots of exercise are more likely to have them
@ashlieghsmithson8232
@ashlieghsmithson8232 4 года назад
Well some people prefer horse shoes which I don’t. Other horses might need them for medical issues. Or if they do a certain type of riding then they might need them. Hope this helps even though I’m late.

Its like a pedicure, Ranch horses will develop lots of problems if they dont get their hooves well treated, Because the dont run in hard terrain as much as they do in the wild, And they dont feel any pain, its like a big toenail.

Also they can tell when someone knows what they are doing and so they feel secure and trust the farrier. Plus they have a good memory so i think they remember it felt better after the last time.

That horse wont slide. You should have put e head nails so the nail head is flush with the shoe. It defeats the point if the heads stick out. Causing the horse not to slide. The nail heads act as traction device's
@maverick_vet
@maverick_vet 5 лет назад
These sliders are not punched for an E head nail, so for these shoes E head nails would stick out way further that just a normal city head nail. But for sliders I use a race nail (which has a very small head) so when nailed into these sliding plates they are very low profile. I agree, I could probably grind off the little bit that does stick up, but I don't see it necessary and it doesn't affect their slide. Good discussion, thanks for the comment.
