Still one of the greats trumpetplayers of his era! Who dies lonely with a alcohol problem from frustration of his choices over the way his spends his life/carier. But still GREAT respect for this hero!!!

And that´s what is coming to your mind immediatly if you are listening to Horst´s version. I have listen to Maynards version too - you would never assume that it is about a canary. Maynard can play wildly but not artistically as necessary for this piece.
Zuerst habe ich den Ton gar nicht für eine Trompete gehalten, sondern für eine Flöte, NICHTS gegen Fergusson, wahrhaftig einer der Allerbesten aller Zeiten, aber Horst Fischer trifft das Thema tausendprozentig besser, unglaublich was der Mann auf seinem Instrument konnte!
@PhilGorman1957 Maynard is my personal hero. He's why I play and teach. But I hate to admit it, Maurice Andre plays this piece much better than Maynard. Same register, and no clipped notes.
Dai Kimoto "8va higher than Maynard. Horst Fischer is the greatest!" I hate to break it to you, but this isn't real playing. With work it is possible to get this kind of sound up high. Quite a lot of trumpet players can do this. I think Maynard does this on the Star Trek recording as it fades out. I've been able to do something similar, although not as high. It is very quiet.
@TheBachTrumpet Ich kann Maynard und Horst nicht vergliechen. Ist Horst besser? Nein. Ist Maynard besser? Nein. Maynard kann ueber alles spielen aber kann Horst immer lyrisch spielen. Ich bin Amerikaner und habe ich niemand mit mir Deutsch sprechen. Ich studiere Deutsch zu Uni. Wenn mein Deutsch nicht so gut ist, entschuldigen Sie bitte. :)
Sweeking is not hard to do on a trumpet. Managing the high range with a melodic sound is difficult. This person is a fine trumpet player. Ferguson, he is NOT.
Bringt doch bitte diese Musik mehr im Funk und Fernsehen und weniger nicht Gute Musik.Nur 7 neue Tankte sind gute Musik und keine sog.Billigware.Beispiele dafür gibt es heute genug und zwar in guter und schlechter Hinsicht.Das Niveau entscheidet immer.
This guy isn't bad, but he's no Maynard, that's for sure. His high notes are too tight and compressed, much like a kid in Junior High hitting high notes. Take a listen to Maynard's version (you should see it to the right) and hear the difference. Maynard was the best at not only screaming, but at hitting that high note and then immediately hitting the low note. I sure miss him, God rest his soul!

Tight and compressed? You obviously are failing to realize that he is playing the F's an octave above what Maynard did. Find Maynard doing this chart playing F's above Double C and lets compare them. Horst actually does a better job of imitating a canary sound than Maynard. Horsts sound is pretty full and powerful when he isn't playing the insane F above Double C's. Every bit as full as Maynard sounded in 1953!
