Horus Heresy: How to Build a Legion - Raven Guard 

Very welcome! Seemed only fair.

Those both are my second and third favorite legions (the first is OBVS the III’rd…)

1/3rd of the Carcharodons make up. We’re not allowed to talk about the other 2/3rds with the inquisition around lol

So I don't 100% know what's happening with the pdf units so I'm leaving them out of my analysis for now. Also. I imagine they'll still get the heavy subtype. But not 100% sure. Hence the leaving 😊

@@blackbriargaming5483 they're an odd bunch, they had been made for 2.0 and then retroactively placed in 1.0 as a thing to keep people happy for new content. Each of them will be going back to their 2.0 versions at some point in the near future.

If they're a very close port of the 1.0 version (big shrug), they'll be deep striking Cataphractii with WS5 and Battle Hardened(1). I dunno for sure, but that seems good to me.

So far so good. But I want them done early in the new releases for 2nd edition. They are pretty thin on the ground.

You can't go wrong with the special weapon upgrade box for tactical support squads. That kit is pure gold. Kratos and rhinos don't seem needed or useable in most Raven Guard armies. And while there is certainly instances of Raven Guard having heavy weapons squads, even post Istvaan V, the Rites of War don't really support it. So you can skip the heavy weapons upgrades coming. The plastic leviathan and sicaran that are coming both fit happily in a Raven Guard army though!

I hadn't thought to split the box across two armies. This is probably a good idea - Death Guard or Horus were going to possibly be another group I would have planned on starting anyway. Thanks for the idea!

Definitely! Once I've got the core rule book I'll be able to dive into those generic rites of war (which I only mentioned briefly in this vid) with more confidence. But the recon company SCREAMS Raven Guard and gives you a build that Mor Deythan really want to be on. I don't LOVE missiles in the new edition, as they're going to fall SO flat again Dreadnoughts. But this will need plenty of playtesting. Depends how much 2 wound 3+ saves are kicking around with elite infantry that don't have artificer armour.

@@blackbriargaming5483 yes and no on the missile launchers, and depending on the specific one used. At S6 AP4, Deathstorm missiles are of limited use against heavy vehicles and dreadnoughts, but they can be used to glance out rhinos and other light vehicles. If your opponent is running a mechanized army (and they're likely not going to be using land raiders or spartans as dedicated transports across their entire list), denying them movement by forcing them to permanently dismount early can be really valuable. On top of that, on the off-chance that you do blow up that transport while it's still occupied, each occupant and each model within d6" of it is now taking a S8 hit instead of S4 as it was last edition. Not particularly concerning with no AP, but it will mean you don't want your light vehicles huddle together if you can help it. As for Heavy Support squads, missile launchers are very versatile for what they are at +5 points per model over the heavy bolter, since you're paying for frag, krak, and flakk missiles in that bundle. In addition, unless you really need that HQ slot filled with something else, attaching a siege breaker consul to a 10-man missile squad is sufficient enough to make up for the krak missile's lack of Sunder compared to the 10pt/model lascannon.

@@anthonyrochet6858 check out some of the Raven Guard HH novels. Corax got creative and accidentally (alpha legion got involved) created monsters. Such a cool theme underlying the XIXth.

In fact. Yes! When I originally planned this video series I had examples of narrative lists. Here's what I wrote for a Caliban traitor list!! "I want to build a Traitor Force of Dark Angels, from the lore we understand that the traitorous Dark Angels have come fresh from Caliban, having not recently participated in the Great Crusade or recent Heresy events. So we’re likely not including veteran units, terminators, dreadnoughts or certain characters. Overlapping with characters, I’d choose a consul with some kind of strategic buffs to represent Luther, and a librarian to represent Zahariel. I’d then go with units that would be fresh from training. Tactical Squads, Tactical and Heavy Support Squads (so you’ll need those great new weapon packs from GW), Assault Squads (I’d recommend 3D printing for jump packs) and a nice compliment of Armoured support (your predators, whirlwinds and vindicators, more standard designs), focusing on the Dark Angels’s penchant for plasma weapony."

This was so long ago 😅 Did I day they could? Also, interesting, rule book ref.? Cause it's not in the Heavy description. I wonder if Alpharius giving three units Infiltrate over-rides this?

@@blackbriargaming5483 its in the Raven guard rule, Heavy, Jump pack and Tartarus units etc. cannot infiltrate, also mean Heavy weapons support squads cannot either.

The meta changes very often so how strong a army is right now won’t matter in a few months just stick to rule of cool
