40K Lion feels like a King Arthur that has woken up in Avalon and has sobered up after witnessing and surviving the Battle of Camlaan against Mordred and then decides he would do better to prevent such a thing from happening again.
If I remember the book correctly, The Lion had just recieved a Vox call from the surface. On the surface the last few imperial defenders remaining were being overwhelmed and going insane from fighting demons. The officer speaking to the lion basically asked him to glass the planet

Lion made the hard call not because he wanted or had the option to fire those torpedoes, he fired them because it Was the last resort, it had to be done if nothing else to save those holding out from falling prey to the corruption plaguing the continent,
Like the Lion ever gave a damn about consent or rules before. He does what he wants, and crushes anyone that gets in his way. How he's still somehow loyal to the Emperor escapes me.
Given the very detailed description of what was happening to the planet, I think he made the right call. Even the Colonel in charge of the planet's defense begged for him to destroy them.

That's the only thing that really bugged me in the book. It's never really explained how his personality mellowed out some what. The only thing I can think of is that the watchers in the dark did something to his mind beyond just knocking him out for 10k years
He sounds like a Damn Inquisitor figures tho as he went around blowing up Traitor planets then go to Terra with Guilimen his heart and mind growing only took a 10K nap and galaxy splitting in half
ngl I semi expected him to take over the inquisition on some level or at the very least make his own branch when he woke up, the way he used to operate was inquisitor to a T. A very means justify the ends mindset.
You're forgetting that the 1st Legion's purpose was extermination of the Emporer's enemies with extreme prejudice, so the Lion and his sons had a pretty extreme mentality from the very beginning. The rebellion of the traitor primarchs has further hardened that mindset, to the point that no tolerance or mercy will be given by them under any circumstance. The Heresy period Lion is basically the bastard child of Torquemada and the T-800.
@@petergray2712yup definitely the Emperors big weapon and easily could’ve been his Executioner instead of Russ but was taking over more planets I guess so much combat and total destruction was not the best teacher when it comes to a reserved approach to loyal forces needing help until he had a change of heart from “All must burn and be destroyed” to “let’s think this through a bit more and protect the people and forgive my sons who were tricked and still loyal”

Typhus thought the DA were trying to go back in time and save the emperor so he opposed them when cypher opened the portal and flew his ship through. Azreal ordered they barrage the portal with void weapons which caused the warp storm and the destruction of Caliban. Whoops!

@@ryansauchuk7290 That finished off thr planet. The crust was beginning to break from the bombardment from the Legion. So even without the warp storm Caliban would have been destroyed. The storm just hoovered up the pieces (minus the Rock)
It’s worth mentioning that it is also in Ruinstorm where the Lion shows the first signs of him changing his ruthenium ways. On another planet, he was considering saving a loyalist planet, but the inhabitants knew they were tainted by chaos and asked the Lion to destroy their planet. The Lion was shook by that request
I mean... the Vong in Star Wars were thowing moons into planets, sometimes because they could, othertimes because either said moon or planet were ecumenopoli, and they view technology as blasphemous
To be fair, the colonel who was handling the crisis requested a full purge while she and her troops were still there, and Lion was initially against it.

I feel like people forget him getting pissed at Guilliman for having the Sothos device while he had the xenos/daemonic Tchulcha Engine and then he got mad Gman didn't tell him about Vulkan while he didn't tell Gman about Konrad. Then he almost attacks Macragge when he finds out about Imperium Secundus, bombs a few worlds on his way there and keeps it secret from Gman until Konrad snitches
In this case the troops, at least the one that was talking with the Darkangels, I think literally asked for it and was under no illusions at all they could be saved, I think they even clarified that themselves.
I mean, he contacted the world, got a reply from the last, loyal Lieutenant on the planet and she begged for mercy of this kind. He was literally asked to blow the planet up.
Apparently the context in the story makes Lion look like far less of a jerkass for this. @Predator-lc6fn has a comment here with the relevant conversation.
It's funny how Lion was the worst Big E could send your way. The Nightlords were bad sure, but realistictly they only did psychological damage. Not nearly as many casualties as others. Russ was his choice to beat you into the ground to force submission. Lion was sent when he just wanted you dead

(Hufton Blackheart, formerly known as Lufgt Hufton) Not to justify morally what he became after the Badab War but, Lion here can say whatever he wants, loyalty itself is NOT reward enough for the common folk whose suffering is far greater than any Space Marine whatsoever. To paraphrase, finally, Christopher Nolan's Batman: people's loyalty (or faith, which somehow is the same), from time to time, NEEDS to be rewarded. And, frankly, the "God-Emperor" himself fails in that with the majority of his faithful servants.
The Lion was loyal to the soldiers on the planet. They WANTED the exterminatus. The commanding officer literally told him to blow up the planet because of the corruption.
The short left out important context. The few surviving soldiers on the planet voxed with Lion and basically begged for this. Daemons we’re overrunning the entire world, and people were mutating. They knew there was no hope beyond dying before they themselves were changed.
He is one of the reasons the Empire is so sick, weak and corrupted itself. Why should humanity fight for an emperor ('god') and leaders who will genocide them EVEN WHEN THEY FOUGHT TO THE DEATH for the Empire! Get a brain! The best Imperial leader is the intelligent one. Roboute Guilliman who bought hope, humanity and order back to the sick Empire!
The first legion was the black helicopters of the imperium. Their job was to not only wipe you out, but make sure non one knew you existed. Also, the last transmission from the planet begged for death, so this was a no brainer.
To be honest if I lived through 200 years of constant war with horrors beyond anything human can think of and treachary on every corner I would do the same as Lion.
I seem to remember another reckoning between Lionel and Rubby Girlyman when they were face-to-face. Rubby snatched Lionel's sword from him and snapped it over his knee before throwing the two pieces at Lionel's feet. Rubby said "Broken, like your honour!"
Actually no he does not RULE, that requires intelligence and wisdom. He is just the post heresy version of the 'World Eaters' and represents all that is wrong with the zombie emperor and his corrupted Empire whose evil becomes more and more indistinguishable from the Hell of Chaos. Gulliman is NOT naive, HE IS INTELLIGENT and a much better leader of HUMANS than the other two and brings hope to the galaxy. Fighting tyrannical evil with tyrannical evil is a LOSING PROPOSITION. What's the point of fighting Chaos then for humanities majority who don't profit from the present regime but only suffer from it's iniquities?
As scary as it is when the Lion says “your silence is consent” it would probably be a little scarier as an imperial citizen hearing one of the Emperor’s Children say it
When the emperor wanted an example made, he sent the wolf and all would know what happened to his target. When the emperor wanted a problem solved he sent the lion and nobody would know there was a problem in the first place.
The guardian of the shield confronted the lion about the ruthless tactics of his past. The Lion showed remorse and pain at the acts but not regret, he stuck by his decisions and the shield was rewarded. No doubt a test by his father to see if he still had it in him to do what was nessisary, therefore worthy of the gift.
The Lion: "This planet is corrupted beyond redemption! Everyone must die here for being in the presence of daemons!" Also the Lion: "This is Tuchulcha, my pet daemon that I keep locked in my basement for when I need advice or help with warp jumps." Gotta love the hypocrisy.
