your absolutley right, they thought it was a scaled evaporator and changed it. Thats where thoroughness comes in. Other night I was checking a 5 well steam table and it was 8pm and I just wanted to check the heater to the well they were complaining about. But you kept popping up in my head and saying "look at the big picture". I did and I found two other wells with their safety limits bypassed and the unit is not grounded!! You are teaching great attitudes. Thank you sir.
Glad you mentioned the Cube Guide. Customers often don't want to replace that even though it's so cheap compared to a Water Pump. I always tell them "It's up to you, but this Cube Guide is about $40 and your Pump is about $400-$700." That line usually gets their attention xD
Dude. In the last 2 months ive watched your videos ive learned this, WOW are there some half ass guys in HVAC and alot of people who watch this that dont know about HVAC just dont understand the time and intelligence it takes to do what you do my friend. And not just what u do but how you do it. You go above and beyond and the world is lucky for guys like you
I will be going live on RU-vid this evening 8/26/19 @ 5:PM (west coast time) to discuss my most recent uploads and answer questions from emails, RU-vid comments and the Live Chat if you can stop by and check it out ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-78ka0zlkAR4.html
I just shifted from only doing residential AC to working on everything hvac and refrigeration. These videos are great and very informative, I learn something in just about every video because of the tips and tricks you share. Thank you for putting the info out there.
It's always important to make sure the right parts are on the machine to eliminate any problems that might arise. However it is good to install a water filter system with a water pressure guage to make sure you are getting enough water pressure. Usually when a bin thermostat goes bad either the machine wont come on or the machine wont turn off. It is good to use a volt meter with ohms and continuity to check the bin thermostat. Many times also a defective or dirty float switch can cause a freeze up on the evaporator for Hoshizaki
Good vid ! nice catch on the water valve. ive got a reputation for being thorough , but u take it to the next level & i never even thought there was a next level. people think im too thorough. im just going to laugh the next time someone thinks im being too thorough.
Yeah most of the big bulk ice makers have mold in them and unless they get cleaned on a regular basis. Which with most companies doesn't happen because that would mean you'd have to spend labor dollars on it and the labor at most places is barely enough to keep the doors open much less do thing like clean machines like the are supposed to be. If you think that ice bin is bad you don't want to know what a fountain machine looks like. I started managing a convenience store and got taught how to properly clean the machine I've never drunk fountain drink ever again.
we have these machines at my job... so when it broke and kept running but make a little bit of ice i got curious to check RU-vid... and now im recommended these and im not disappointed
Another superb video. I am trying to learn more about ice machines especially Hoshizaki ice machines & this video offered really good troubleshooting procedures on iced evaporators & general preventative maintenance tips. I learned a lot from this one!
I live in Melbourne Victoria Australia and I love your videos! I'm a club DJ and A/V engineer studio and mixing sound live and some engineers are so lazy! Their work and sound quality is woeful!
If the machine had a history of evaporator freeze up, It could have been why the evaporator went bad. Those evaps are made of stainless steel. the coils are sandwiched between the plates. So, if water gets between those plates it will over time separate the plates from the coil.
Thank you for mentioning this. I was going to say the same thing. Not very often have I seen one leak but many times you see the tubes broken from the evap plate. This causes long freeze issues.
I don't know about the newer machines but 15-20 years ago When I had a bad freeze up on a Hoshi it was normally related to harvest problems. Hoshi is my favorite machine. I heard Hoshi had problems with evap plates separating but I only ever saw it once and I worked on a lot of them. I could work on them all day, though I do not anymore. Over the years 98% of ice machine problems are water side. Replace maybe 2 compressors and one expansion valve and maybe one bin stat. Lots of check valve rebuilds.
Shane Behm ya people clean it and put it back at the wrong level too. End up adding too much water into the machine. Ice cubes are a lot thicker and take longer to harvest.
Wow I learned a lot from this thank you. Now I know all the things I've been overlooking. Great video 👍 I will definitely use this on my next service call.
Those Hoshizaki's are the best imo. I have never serviced one that has had its lines cleaned out though, they get run 24/7 and neglected as far as cleaning goes
thanks for watching, I am going live a little early today 12/24/18 at 12:00pm pacific standard time come on over if you can and check it out ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rDd469JwYww.html
I love Hoshizaki ice machines, you can keep the rest. I also find that water scaling on the evaporator causes ice to stick, requiring a de-scale. Don't know if you have chalk in the water causing scale over there in the States but we do in certain areas of the UK.
In my state of California we have very hard water lots of scaled up evaps thanks for watching! Nope... I'm 200% with you. I work 2 jobs. 1 at a restaurant equipment company and do military dog reaclimation when returning from duty. BTW.... great video. Keep em coming.
chris you got lucky. what i deal with hoshizaki last time was the hardwater runing in to the machine. they do have the water filter but still a lot of lime build up it was a nightmare. thank you for the good video 👍

I'm lucky One of my ex apprentices went on to work for Hoshizaki UK for 16 years Hes an Absolute encyclopedia of information As an aside we just call them SHARKYS AS customers have various ideas as to the name to hilarious levels
Idk if it’s just a Florida water problem but down here the biggest cause of hoshi freeze up is the evap plates separating great videos brother I swear all new hires need to watch your whole library to know what to expect and how to trouble shoot !!!!
Great video once again. Had the same issue on a km2400srh3 cuber from Hoshi. I also found a wrong sized water inlet valve and the bypass spring was weak. Dumping water into the float switch from the top hose. Replaced both those and ran fine for 4 days then all of a sudden froze up again. Tested the float switch but found was intermittent and hanging up. Replaced float switch no more call backs. Excellent info about the water inlet line size. Very common to see 3/8" line to every unit no matter the size. Yea I agree do not touch the board. Well done!

Make some golden rules. 2 of mine are , if u get a service call on a machine and float switch or ice thickness probes are suspect/ the problem Allways replace them. They will last much longer and customer will be happier in the long run. ive proven it. clean something and it works for 3 weeks to 6 months or a year. replace the part and customer can be happy for many years.

thank you for the video i am going to recommend your channel to the PM tech on how to clean the machines I tried telling him to just read the instructions its more of an attitude you go into each service call with eyes wide open and desiring to do the best job I possibly can.
Hoshizaki makes a great line if machines. When they first came to the US they were a copy of the Kold Draft machine. I worked on some of those early machines, I think at Denny's Restaurants/ I really love working on ice machines. They are inside, for the most part. So many ways to do the same task. I like Ice O Matic and Manitowoc, beware the use of any cleaner except Nickle Safe.. I appreciate your abilities. I had 22 employees at one time. Only 2 were at your level.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a nice comment. I am still learning everyday.... 22 employees wow, I have 3 and some days I feel like I can't control the 3 I have, i couldn't imagine 22.
@@HVACRVIDEOS I know that feeling. Too many made more money than I did. The worked less hours for it. We had free draft for employees from a keg in a 1938 Servel Gas refrigerator. Couldn't do that now. I once took a weekend off, went to the mountains. Saw one of my trucks 100 miles fro the shop, on a Sunday. "Fixin Mom's Refrigerator." Your at the best size.
I have my own business doing appliance and hvac/r repairs and I get call on ice machines from time to time. Don't know a lot about them but I just look for the obvious what's causing the problem. I would've broke the hard ice tapping it with my little hammer and steamed the rest inside. I try to get tech support when I can but that's not always possible so I just try to figure out what's happening on my own. Good video. Reading the manual definitely helps a lot.
Yes they can, I am going to go live on RU-vid tonight 11/12/18 at 5:00PM pacific time to discuss my most recent uploads and answer questions. Come on over and check it out ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Fhmj8g3Gd2w.html
My biggest problem is that after working on about 40 or so of different ice machines, not 1 of them had their manual available. Doesn't matter if it's a huge place with 20 machines or tiny restaurant with just 1, if it's a 20 year old or 1 year old unit. The book is always missing. Hard to look up correct procedure, parts and sequence.
I realize this is from four years ago, but the number one reason for a hoshizaki freeze up is a plugged inlet screen, first thing to look for. It didn't look too bad, but bad enough when combined with the reduced supply water line & improper water inlet valve(nice catch there). But I'm not sure why you replaced the binstat?? It had nothing to do with anything.

This evap freeze up is typical hoshizaki ice machine problem. I talked to their tech and they guide me through all kind of steps. Problem never solve. I fix this by either adjust the water float level or increase harvest time on some model.

Have you dealt with the new KMS- 2000 MLJ models.i have two units which are at two separate stores about 100 apart and they're both freezing up they got installed 2019. I've tried following hoshis check list and I end up short and baffled.
That was ingenius how the GPM of water was calculated. Your expertise is a thing of beauty to watch. How else could that be done? maybe using an empty gallon jug of milk or something and filling it up while timing it? is that plausible?
We had a Hoshizaki Cube Star in the employee break area. (Removed upon a remodel some years ago.) I can't forget the locally-made sign that was posted on it. "Do not put anything in this drian (sic). No coffee, soda, juice ect (sic)." Misspellings bug me, and so this bugged me every day as I had to see it every day.
God i would love to be your apprentice. I'm a journeyman electrician who also knows home havac. But I learned it over the phone lol. I'm no tech as yourself but, if it has a working compressor, two fans, and two coils I will make it blow cold damn it! I have been seriously thinking about getting into the refrigeration side of things from ice machines to walk in coolers and freezers. To really learn I know its best to start from an install crew but at 40 I'm not sure if i'm up to building coolers and obviously the drop in pay.
I hate the amount of times I've seen issues with hoshi unit that were all caused by improper installation. The first thing I do on any ice machine I'm working on for the first time is check the supply line and the drain line so I can see for myself it's done correctly.
You are a smart man most people don't know how to read the manual before installing them! thanks for watching , I am going to go live on RU-vid tonight 11/12/18 at 5:00PM pacific time to discuss my most recent uploads and answer questions. I know absolutely nothing about ice machines, but I am fascinated how they work. If I did own one, I would love to have you as my serviceman. You seem very knowledgeable, thorough, and concerned to get the machine to operate properly. Excellent video. Is that an EV RE-320 Mic in your studio?? Sounds great, nice EQ set up.
It's the rode procaster mic. Thanks for watching and thanks for the audio comment, I really have no idea what I'm doing and just am winging it with the mixer settings ! :-)
Good learning info, good detail, but deicing, running multiple cycles, looking up all that info. weighin ice and water times adjusting board. must of took 3.5-5hr hr service call. Inless ur company not to busy way to much time spent, normal to have 3-7 calls a day. Also proper water valve, bigger water line, and proper bin extension lots of customers will ask. it been running like that for years why all of the sudden won't work? 95 percent of the time 1 part out or just got to dirty. Good job tho.

Not enough water was my first guess even before reading the description, also check the evap for any bulging between the horizontal ridges. I love Hoshizaki machines, but one bad freeze up can wreck the evaporators. I'm only 4 seconds in, so on to the rest of the video.
I agree. On the other side I get warranty service call plus 2 hours to change them so I am always looking for them. That and bad evaps on the new machines. I dont know what they era using for solder on these new machines but its crap. I have changed 10 evaps in the last month or so all under warranty with machines that are 6 months old or less
