Hospital Holds Honor Walk for Organ Donor Who Saved 5 Lives

It was a show of respect for an organ donor as she was taken to perform her last giving act. Gwen Daigle, 51, suffered a brain injury in October, but by the time she could be rushed to the hospital, it was too late. Deborah Carman says her daughter had just 1% brain function and wasn't going to recover. Staff at Tri-City Medical Center in San Diego, California, gave Gwen an Honor Walk to thank her for her sacrifice. InsideEdition.com's Mara Montalbano has more. #InsideEdition

There is no time for dignity for medical stuff behind the closed doors. As a surgical nurse, I have done 53 organ retrieval’s, 12 from children. What I experienced was sometimes so horrible ... I would never do this to someone I love. Giving a dying person a dignified death is just as valuable as providing a seriously ill person with organs. @@dragraceworld710 I would disagree that elimination of pain is the goal here. Qwerty II is saying that they would rather spare their children the pain of mourning a parent by outliving their children and mourning themselves. If I want to spare my spouse the pain of mourning me by living longer myself, then taking the pain on was both my goal and a burden I would gladly bear. The pain of loss via death is inevitable in both scenarios, who has to experience it is not always.

My beautiful sister passed at age 28 almost 2 years ago in a tragic car accident. She was an organ donor. One of the recipients sent us photos and video not long ago. It was of her birthday with her husband and children. It's such a wonderful, beautiful feeling knowing my sister was able to save other families from the loss and devastation we experienced. Being an organ donor is one of the most selfless and kind acts a person can do. My beautiful baby sister helped keep three other humans here with their loved ones. That makes her more than a hero in my book. Someone willing to give as their last act in this world definitely deserves all the respect and admiration we have.

I have worked in the OR for over 20 years and that includes being on transplant teams; I’m always blown away by the generosity and selfless act of allowing patients’ wishes to be fulfilled- as difficult as it is for family members to grasp the importance of that personal decision pledge that was made and somehow find the strength to say ‘yes’, to honour that promise. What an inspirational message!

I’ll tell you how. Before I met my husband he was in a horrific car accident. He hit a car pulled over the side of the road at 55 mph. He had just finished working 2 full time jobs, fell asleep at the wheel. His mother was met at the hospital with a team of doctors wanting his body parts, telling her he would never recover. She said no!!! Here’s the thing, he could hear everything, he couldn’t respond, couldn’t move. Guess what, eventually his brain improved, as well as all the broken bones in his body. He recovered. We married met and married, had 4 children, and now we have 6 grandchildren. The hospital would have made a whole lot of money off my husband. They would have had to disconnect his life support and harvest his organs while he was alive. You do understand you need a beating heart and breathing lungs to take out to transplant. The hospital would have killed him, and he would have been conscious of it. I feel for this woman. No mention how long she was in this state, if she was given time to recover l. A lot of information is missing.

My mother died alone in the hospital after 7+ years of pain and misery. She had congestive heart failure, renal failure, High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Sharko Disorder ( where the bones splinter apart like shale stone does ) in her lower legs and feet. Depression and long term unattended illness caught up with her. She didn't get treatment soon enough and she had a really hard time coping and accepting things. I took comfort in knowing she no longer has pain, no suffering. Her eyes were donated. Somewhere someone is able to see, and live viewing the world threw the eyes that watched me grow up, those eyes saw David Bowie in concert in the 70's through those eyes they have watch the Northern Lights and meteor showers that fall every year in Northern Michigan. I often wondered if I ever came across the Donor would the universe send me a signal or would I notice on my own. I happy to see videos like this. Knowing how a simple gesture can change a person's life forever. God Bless those who give selflessly so others may thrive.
