Another tip is to bring flip flops for the shower. Sometimes the shower is shared with just the room and sometimes it's shared with a lot of rooms like a campground bathroom, so flip flops are always nice to wear in the shower :)
I just met the coolest 77-year-old dude who still stays in hostels! He's been backpacking the world on and off since a trip through Europe and the Middle East in 1962. I thought he was so cool that I basically interrogated him for a 2-hour plane ride all about what hostels and backpacking were like back then 😂
Living On A One Way The main difference that stuck out was that there was some sort of mail order hostel loyalty membership that most backpackers were part of at the time that he mentioned. Sounded kind of like pre-internet hostelworld? He was also going through a lot of places that were major backpacking hubs that aren't anymore, like Kabul. He was definitely one of the most interesting people I've ever met!
I love staying in hostels. My most important thing (besides a padlock) is having flip flops for the shower. You DO NOT want to walk with bare feet on floors or in showers. Also bring earplugs. I always hear people snoring and it's annoying.
Im in my 40s and i stay in hostels. I look young so nobody thinks anything different. I must confess staying in hostels now is not as social as it used to be as everyone is on their mobile phones in the common areas. but the excursions are a good way to meet people.
Hey! I have stayed in hostels more times than I can count but I still watched this video cause I love your vibe haha. I think its really cool that you are making videos still even though you have slowed down your traveling. I'll honestly watch anything you post and would love to know more about how you life has changed recently. Thanks! Lauren
Aww thank you!! And great to know. I want to get out these videos to help people and then we’ll get back to regular programming of story telling! You have no idea how much I appreciate this
I'm surprised you had to mention shampoo etc, as I never travel without that stuff, even if staying in hotels. Those are the must have items in my bag every trip.
i am 42 and just did a hostel .. first time on more than 10+years and loved it! I was the SIR of the room, all young people from my country and we were in AMsterdam... very funny. I will do it again! Love it!
Also, I always lock my wallet and pasport in the locker when I sleep. I have an extra battery and I will charge my phone with that. And if I don't need to set an alarm in the morning, I will put both in the locker as well.
Lol stayed in 2 hostels for the first time in Japan with my "I'm never staying in hostel!" BF and boy has his mind and attitude changed about them. Mind you, we did pay extra to stay in a private room, but now he's okay with it! Now I'm trying to convince him to travel in a van!
The hostel I was staying in, had a range of ages every week. There was one week where a bunch of 50 + year olds randomly checked in together. It was great, we made some pretty rad friends with em
Hey lady! You traveled a lot around South America and the Caribbean right? I’m in Guyana now serving in the Peace Corps (thanks to you) and would like some tips for travel in this particular area. Maybe an idea for next weeks video??
STOP youre there because of me?! and YOU I know the peace corps takes forever to get into you really have to be dedicated! I have traveled mostly in central america! What kind of tips are you looking for? If i dont see this DM me on Instagram!
I learned the hard way that in some places (noticed it in the philippines) that hostels are on booking.com and not on hostelworld. Love the hostelworld app tho. but check both, especially when you can't find what you're looking for in a place.
What able a laptop cable lock? www.amazon.com/laptop-cable-lock/s?k=laptop+cable+lock Run the cable through the zipper holes, then around your purse or backpack (definitely under the straps) then around the bedpost. Also what's up with the cool gold Tribe word on your left bicep?
Is there a reason why you don't put your passport in your locker as well? Also, I'm solo travelling to the philippines in March so this is really helpful!
I do always put my passport away in the locker. In a bag inside a bag in a larger bag with other stuff at the bottom of my bag. I went to the Philippines last month and whenever I needed to show my passport, I just showed them a hard copy and it was fine. (excluding flights of course)
Glad it was helpful! The lockers work well if you trust the locker. Honestly, it's probably safer than keeping it with you but also make sure you have a photo of your passport on your phone! It helps A LOT if you lose it!
There is a Hostel in Montreal it calls Hi Montreal it is anything but hostel rather than very Hostile.! Age yes it does play a very important role. There is another one world hostel scumbags pet friendly means you have to live with the dying dog and crying cat to show your love to an animals being abused by guess who the person in charge after all those were his pets. You don't have to bring one with you it's all included. Hostel yep this was not in Greece but Canada I'm sure you know where that is don't you?
Sorry, but your are speaking *really* fast - a lot of times in your videos - and it is hard to understand you as a person who is not a native English speaker. 🙁
