In today's Lore Lesson, Seiben goes over our first story of Amonkhet. The Gatewatch make their way to the Plane of Nicol Bolas, seeking to catch the ancient Dragon Planeswalker off Guard. Unfortunately, the world itself turns against them as Mummies and Sand Wurms attack the group relentlessly. Amonkhet isn't only death however, Gideon discovers the existence of Gods along with a city protected by a magical barrier. Many mysteries still left to uncover on this desert world.

My theory is that all of these trials are made to create warriors for bolas to summon. Since the living can't travel through the blind eternities, maybe the dead can. This is why the 5th and final trial is "Only passed by the worthy dead" Which mean you die when you pass the 5th trial. We know from the first Amonkhet story that when people die they become undead, as it happend to the worm they killed. So that is the curse of this plane. This would allow Bolas to create the army slowly over time of powerful undeads who retain their powers and abilities through the mummification rituals ^^

Sole Servitor Planeswalkers typically draw power from the mana on the plane itself. Since the plane is "dying" they don't have as much access to that mana. Though Zendikar was dying too, Zendikar has extremely vast stores of mana.

It's like the difference between your small very well armed squad taking down an armored vehicle at a distance using heavy anti-tank weaponry in an organized plan of attack and that same elite armed squad stepping on a landmine. They are all glass cannons aside for Gideon and two of the members were basically disarmed. Jace can't use his abilities on the dead and Nissa can't use a dead world's mana to power her nature and life based magic. She was basically stuck without her guns and left fighting an artillery battle with her combat knife. At least she's damn good with a shank, but its never good taking a knife to a rocket launcher fight.

I'd say that Gideon, of all people, should know that gods can- even ones that seem righteous- can serve ignoble causes (see Heliod of Theros), but I think he was so taken aback by the direct intervention of these ones on behalf of complete strangers that he forgot any misgivings he might have towards divine beings. That, or he may secretly have a thing for giant jackal-headed women who could probably beat him in a fight. You do you, man, I won't judge.

Interesting how Hazoret the Fervent saves Gideon and the rest of the Gatewatch and then, as we saw in the trailer, they come to blows later. Maybe the Gods of Amonkhet are controlled somehow by Nicol Bolas and when the Dragon's influence is lessened, they can return, albeit briefly, to their former righteous personalities. I can't wait for Amonkhet, not just for the awesome mechanics but also for the story itself!

I've got a feeling how this all might work for Bolas:1. Get the means to turn every dead into a zombie (preferably with having the choice to control them)2. Terrorize the population with the zombies first - then offer them shelter in protected areas. They are thankful as you 'protect' them from the zombies.3. Become the king everyone looks up to. You saved them, right?4. As every dead turns into a mindless Zombie you are the only one with a solution for that. As proof you have the mummies (aka zombies you tightly control) that serve the population (and ultimately you).5. Establish the game/trials so you have the best candidates to be mummified and serve you (in your army?).With this you have a population that obeys and worships you, wants to become mummified (better than being like the things outside, right?), and you get the best of the best that serve you loyally in life and death.Nefarious, utterly evil, and soooo Nicol Bolas.

Bolas probably made and controls the gods. The gods help him create eternal soldiers and servants from the strongest and most skilled warriors. Bolas is planning something. Probably has to do with the time warps on dominaria and the guy that tricked bolas into killing himself

Orange Rightgold if you look carefully at the red god's monument, it's the only one not facing left. A friend of mine has speculated that it's the only one not under Bolas' direct control. Notice also he was willing to help the gatewatch without knowing anything about them. Slightly suspicious if you ask me

So the wurms fighting once more as undead is supposed to represent the embalm ability I guess, but wouldn't that require a mage (of sorts) to actually embalm them? In this lore it seems more like an Undying or Persist kind of ability, with the creatures coming back without anyone paying mana for their return. I think that's odd.

I think the wurms rising as undead is more like the cursed mindless black zombies we have seen in the set rather than the embalmed white mummies. The dead return on this plane but it seems the process in which they are brought back determines the nature of their undeath. Things that die outside of the city seem to be more classic cursed and mindless undead.

but you need to remember that they killed the 2 titans using mana from the whole (admittedly dying) plane of Zendikar. Same thing against Emrakul and the scroll that Tamiyo used to give them a shit-ton of mana. So a least use another example, to prove how inconsistent the gatewatch's power is

The gatewatch didn't liberate Kaladesh though. They came in, deposed the legitimate government, started a civil war and then up and left while the plane was still burning all around them and the leadership of Kaladesh was in shambles. Thanks for the war and the power vacuum! Jerks.......
