It didn't do well at the box office but it will earn itself that classic title over time. Like ellie said,a beautifully shot movie. Saw it in the theatre...graphic,bloody, but gorgeous!

I don’t really go by box office anymore as far as what is a classic film. Even Heaven’s Gate which was a massive disaster and brought down a studio is getting a second look as a classic film. 👍🏻

One of the best films of the decade 2010, This crazy magnetism of Christian Bale in one of his best roles. The duo Scott Cooper - Christian Bale is on top, after Out Of The Furnace, Hostiles, they rework together for VALHALLA, soon on Netflix.

One of the things I like the most about this movie is how Joe did not just up and become friends with a guy he was enemies with. It was a gradual process, where you could believe the possibility of this happening. Also, I know you said that you are not sure how historically accurate this is, but I believe this is more accurate than most traditional education of the conflict. I think this depiction gives you a pretty good idea of how wild things were and how almost anyone could be an enemy or a friend as we saw terrible Europeans such as the fur traders who raped the women, the deserter, and the land owner and his sons at the end, and terrible tribes like the Comanche, but also good Europeans such as Joe and Mrs. Quaid, and good Native Americans such as the Chief and his family. Also you see Europeans killing other Europeans and tribes killing other tribes which was reality, it was a brutal place where no one was safe.

The extended edition of "Dances With Wolves" should be on your watch list if you enjoyed this. Wes Studi is in that one as well. But it's one of the better movies that doesn't paint natives as being straight up evil

Others have mentioned the extended cut of Dances With Wolves, and Last Of The Mohicans, but also Woman Walks Ahead, Black Robe and up to Smoke Signals. A sort of overview of how Native Americans dealt with the expansion of white settlers.

It is great that you should deep emotions in this movie. It shows both side of the good and then bad of all people. The part where the soldier SGT place the item at the Chief door of the tent was a cigar (tabaco) which was a high offering to the Chief and was asking as he said to be merciful with them. When any one first sees a movie about Natives-Indians there is a misunderstanding that all Indians were the same. But the fact is that there were several hundred different tribes in just North America (USA) and many of them fought each other's tribe for land/food/water. I will say that the shooting events were pretty close to the real thing. Many of the First People (Natives) were removed of their birth places and some were not allowed to return to die on their home land. Geronimo was another great native of the Apache tribe who was also not allowed to be buried on his home land. But yes, there are many great Western Movies and I welcome you to the adventure. OH--another good movie to watch is "Hidalgo" about a horse that entered a desert race in the Iraqi area in the 1900s or so. The rider was in 400 races, it is a good moive to watch. One more---"Jereimah Johnson" with Robert Redford- Thank you.

I posted this on your Patreon private messages, but you really need to watch "Wind River" Ellie will love it because it has Hawkeye and Wanda from the Avengers in it, but Larry will enjoy it because it is the same director and writer from Sicario. It is a murder/mystery that deals with the modern world combating against ancient native american customs. I do not want to give away more, but I know it will be a great reaction.

Okay, if you two like Hostiles then here are the next two that you would both enjoy. The Searchers Starring John Wayne in one of the most critically acclaimed films the legendary actor ever starred in. It's another really brutal film to watch, but on a somewhat different scale. The main character is played by John Wayne who fought for the Confederacy but lost everything, only to go out to the brutal lands of the west to seek a different life and find more death. Trying to reconcile these relentless events in his life, he also takes under his wing a young man who want to help him on a rescue mission. However, this film is tells of events almost exclusively from the European settlers perspective, and how those who settled the frontier were the combination of the bravest and the broken. Dances with Wolves Starring Kevin Costner in what is probably the most visually dumbfounding scenes of breathtaking beauty ever put to film. The only pauses in this gorgeous movie, are to show the sudden and savage horrors that could be lurking just over the crest of a ridge. Told from the perspective of a white US Calvary soldier who is in love with the frontier's landscape, he encounters the local native tribe and begins a series of interactions that so intricately describe the simple but complex society of the many Native tribes who lived on the Great Plains and how they were fierce in war, but also knew how to live in peace. A slow paced movie that truly allows you to visually investigate with the character the true realities of life in the West.

I'm from the USA. I was in second grade when I found out what we'd done to the Indians. My feelings are inconsequential compared to the reality for the people of the time or those tribes that still exist. Still, I've never gotten over the sense of disillusionment I feel about civilization and how "progress" is built.

Great movie and so real to actual human nature and emotion vs the Hollywood action bs. It seems nowadays the narrative is one side was good and one side was always the bad but the reality is human nature itself is the problem. Native Americans were screwed but 8 miles from where I write this is pigeon roost massacre site in which dozens of my ancestors were murdered including children by local tribes apparently over a bad trade involving horses. Amazing how all human beings decend to madness to protect their material possessions.

I have to recommend watching THUNDERHEART It has a lot of complicated and beautiful characters all in the middle of the United States. Like Hostiles it has a western look but in modern times but you feel like your watching the same old wars and conflicts and the only people who are getting hurt are just regular people trying to live. Take a listen

When the rancher at the end says: "Where we come from, natives have no rights." He possibly refers to Europe (probably Ireland) where many farmers were also more or less without power against higher authority. This movie shows how awful humanity can be to itself. Everybody is looking out for themselves, without looking out for others.
