I rewatched the film 10x . 15 years since I’ve watched it for the first time. I still love it. More importantly I love it because I can’t explain why. That’s the best type of cinema. Leaving you with a uneasy feeling that you can’t even explain after 15 years of reflection.

I was a projectionist at Cinemark when this film was released. I'm sad to say almost every showing was empty, I however love this film and it is my favorite film! It was awesome watching this from the projection booth with the film print next to me. This film was playing at the same time as No Country for Old Men which I also love. I could look into one theatre and see this and then turn around and see the other at the same time. It was a great time and I still miss it.

Paul Dano looks traumatized, he has the posture and the behaviour of someone with a really really dark childhood. This adds something more to his acting, TWBB, prisoners or Love and Mercy all share the same troubled character. You see a lot of people trying to understand how you should mimic trauma, maybe with over the top acting but Paul Dano is one of the few that gets it right.

Amazing how the 2 best films made in the first decade of this century (TWBB and No Country for Old Men) were made at the same time in the same area. NCFOM had to stop filming for a day due to the smoke coming from the set of TWBB. The films were shot literally just miles apart in Texas.

Daniel Day-Lewis is rumored to be a bit difficult to work with due to the intensity of his acting and his insistence on staying in character both on and off-set. In this film, Paul Dano was only cast to play Paul Sunday but the actor who was going to play Eli Sunday quit after only a few scenes had been shot, and so they simply cast Dano as Eli and played it off like they were identical twins. The rumor is that the original actor was yet another victim to Day-Lewis’ intensity and difficulty and just couldn’t take it, but both Day-Lewis and Paul Thomas Anderson deny that claim.
@paulhewes7333

Day-Lewis is a true method actor, and considers himself an artist. He is serious about his art and only did like 9 total films because of his dedication to it. If you ever watch "The Last of the Mohicans" and see DDL run and load a musket, know that he practiced running and loading until he could DO IT.

My first reaction of yours, and it’s wonderful. Being just the first, it already places you among the better on RU-vid. Your approach, intelligence, and editing choices are better than most. You mention (rightfully) the unique score, which was composed by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead. He has worked repeatedly with P.T. Anderson. Another I highly recommend is ‘The Master’ (2012), which is based upon Scientology and L. Ron Hubbard, without naming either of them in the telling. Anderson and Greenwood team up again for that one.

With so few movie reactions on your channel, I’m so glad to see that this is one of them! I won’t say that Eli deserved what he got, but I wasn’t heartbroken at his demise by any means. I also wasn’t heartbroken at the thought that Daniel had destroyed his entire empire with his horrible, horrible nature. Those two characters represent all the worst properties of humanity better than any two characters I’ve ever seen. What makes it even worse is that I’m not sure either is an actual sociopath, which would actually give them some kind of excuse for what despicable people they are. Awesome movie, awesome reaction

This movie definitely deserves a rewatch I thought you both did a great job considering how much information and tremendous views there is to take in during this movie. Also, Paul Dano didn’t get a Best Supporting nomination because this happened to be one of the strongest years in movies in recent memory. I’d recommend checking out Drive My Car which is a Best Picture nominee this year. It’s a Japanese film which has a similar quite build.

They were filming this at the same time as "No Country for Old Men," and in the same general area. All filming on No Country had to be halted because the oil derrick fire scene in this film created so much smoke that No Country had to be halted temporarily. In perhaps a karmic gotcha, No Country won the Oscar for Best Picture that year. I personally think that this should have won, but whatever, both films are S-tier. And, as you observed, Daniel uses H.W. as a prop--it shows others that he's a family man and has a "family-owned business," it helps in getting others to trust him in terms of leases.

I actually believed that deep down Daniel did care about H.W. He just doesn’t know how to be a dad. They never explain why Daniel is the way he is but we can definitely see that Daniel always cared about HW. Think back to when they first found Oil, when he carried him off the oil Drill grounds, when he was cuddling with him as a baby on the train, HW told Daniel that Mary was getting beaten(Showing that Daniel is a against beating children, and that HW trusts him with that info), and ESPECIALLY DURING THE BAPTISM. Daniel feels so much guilt for abandoning HW. I

One of the greatest movies ever made! ''No Country For Old Men'' (another one of the greatest movies ever made) won the Oscar for Best Film (and Daniel Day-Lewis as Best Actor, of course), they're both imo on the same highest level. I just subscribed, cool reaction. Greetings From The Netherlands. If I can recommend btw another incredible Daniel Day-Lewis acting performance, it is ''In The Name Of The Father'' (1993), one of my all time favorite movies.

18:45 not hours. Minutes. It got dark because the oil was burning. It turns day into night, for miles and miles. Look up the pictures and videos of Kuwait when the oil fields were set on fire by Saddam. It turned the whole country into night for weeks. Thick black smoke. I would recommend watching jarhead also it has a great sequence of the oil fields burning. Absolutely wild visuals seeing the absolute pitch black darkness.

I just realized, while watching this, that HW actually thought Daniel was his Dad, and that his mother died in childbirth, till the end. I thought HW knew he was an orphan, and was just playing along with Daniel the whole time, as a ruse. That made the end scene pretty brutal now. Plus, when did they have a falling out? I need more story lol.

I may be wrong, but I believe the only reason this movie was made was so D.D. Lewis would have a chance to win the Oscar for playing Bill the Butcher which he did not win for Gangs of New York, a motion picture which was far superior to There Will Be Blood. The Academy for reasons known only to themselves chose to shower Chicago with Oscar's that year, while Gangs of New York received very modest acclaim. This film gave the Academy an opportunity to correct itself by righting a wrong it committed in 2003 by awarding Adrien Brody the Oscar instead.

@@andrewreisinger6860 There Will be Blood is primarily concerned with the oil boom of the early twentieth century. Daniel Plainview, a fictional character loosely inspired by real life oil man John D. Rockefeller, as the film's main character an immoral anti-hero willing to do anything including committing murder to get his way (The ends justifies the means). Coming from the perspective of an oil family (my grandfather was a vice president of Standard Oil and my father an executive geophysicist with Texaco until his retirement and subsequent death) I can proudly stand up and shout at the top of my lungs"THIS MOVIE GETS THE HISTORY ALL WRONG!" Despite an immaculately written script, stand out performances, and a tour de force by D.D. Lewis in the role of Plainview the story is one of the most factually inaccurate pieces of fiction I have ever encountered. Enjoying it as a piece of fiction or fantasy is one thing, but for crying out loud this has nothing to do with the founding of the oil industry in this country.

@@michaeldavidfigures9842 I wasn't making the argument that it was a great history lesson. I believe that TWBB is a masterpiece in filmmaking. I almost sympathize with Daniel and, honestly, despised Eli. I sympathize with Daniel's lack of trust or love for people because, at least in my experience, most are not worth trusting or loving. I despise Eli because he proved to be a snake in the grass, prancing around as a holy man while so easily succumbing to the very sins he preached against and turning into as much of an egotistical opportunist as Daniel when it suited him to do so. All of that said, I don't agree with murder. Not because it is 'immoral', but, because it is foolish. Even though Eli deserved the rant and even the beating, killing him only ensured that Daniel would get into trouble. It would have been much more effective if Daniel had let Eli live with his folly and irrelevance for having tried to beat Daniel at his own game.
