The displacer is steel wool wrapped around central tube? How did you get the bakers paper to stick to the inside of the tube? I'm using pvc water pipe for outside vent tube.
Frenchie steel wool is wrapped around the aluminum pipe ( central power piston) you can get baking oven paper and aluminium foil from the gross markets and building markets..(ironmonger)... piston surface to be slippery , it will work if the plastic pipe surface is smooth and slippery .

Monson engine works like a two-stroke engine; --Cold air enters the cylinder --expansion pushes the piston --Take out hot air --vacuum pulls the piston that's it..........
