Deez, a 24 hour soaking in white vinegar will loosen mill scale to where you can rinse all of most of it off with water. White vinegar will also remove galvanizing and other coatings. I have several different sized plastic containers and lengths of abs black plastic pipe that I keep filled with vinegar so I can soak lengths up to 8 ft. long. It can be used over and over several times, works better than grinding, and is very inexpensive. Do a search on RU-vid there is lots of videos about this.

Great tip. I didn’t think about that. It was a little tough to get off with the wire wheel but got it done. Definitely would try vinegar next time. Thanks.

Deez nice work, but you need a 2" travel indicator next. That will nix the stop. 45 years of machining and never used a stop on a lathe. DRO if you have the money. Love the channel and you are progressing quite well. Find ur shop more interesting than Dave's 😊😊

I do need a travel indicator in lieu of a dro. I thought about installing a dro but I don’t want to invest much more into this lathe. A quality lathe will be in my future and I’ll get it with a dro for sure. I need to research options for a travel indicator. I could adapt this clamp stop to accommodate a dial indicator. Ideas are rolling. Thanks for the feedback and comments. I am glad you like my content. I hope that I keep improving the watchability of the videos as time goes on. Cheers.

@@deezworkshop Iam with you it's a hobby. Like the mill DRO makes sense, but we are not running a business. I like tools, but not a collector. I see many buy tools they may never use. A 2" indicator for the Z axis on that lathe is $35 on Ebay. Will serve you well. Add a stop on the indicator holder so you don't crunch it ! Another video ?? Enjoy your hobby !

What kind of oil did you use for this? I have some old tools that I might try this on.

I have used bar and chain oil in the past. This is standard Sae 30w. I have heard of people using vegetable oil or even used motor oil. Not entirely sure it matters. I have used motor oil that I want to try next time from my mower maintenance video. But to officially answer your question 30 weight oil is what I used in this video.

look like you need a new bench grinder next

Thins very true. I bought this many years ago to sharpen mower blades. It spins but there is no torque. I could improve it by making some better tool rests but the whole thing needs replaced. I’d love a good baldor.

Does the piece need to be red hot when you are blueing it? Have you repaired the noise in the lathe yet?

No. You don’t want to go to red or cherry red, that may affect the temper or hardness. I usually go to the straw color stage or just beyond. First it will go to a blue color then lighten up to straw color. That’s where I like to them dip it in oil. Good luck if you are going to try it. Pretty easy to do. I still haven’t fixed the noise. Some days it’s fine others not good at all. Pretty sure it’s the bearings. I do need to get on With that repair.
