The best Summer Flounder (Fluke) fishing of the season continued as we loaded the cooler ahead of a storm. Color choice definitely made a difference this trip. I tried some 4-year-old Gulp in discolored juice. There were some netting incidents!

John i tape a downrigger release to the net handle & clip the net into the release . It pulls the net tight to the handle & when the weight of fish gets into the net it pops off .We used that for salmon and it works great.

That is an interesting observation in regards to the shelf life of the gulp. I always wondered looking at my 'brownish' gulp juice if it would have a negative effect on the fish's response to the bait...pretty cool. Wonder if the gulp's 'action' or color is more important. I'm sure the scent has really changed over four years.
@brendanwoerner3352
@brendanwoerner3352 4 года назад
I spoke to a Pure fishing rep back in 2006 who own a Berkley. He said the shelf life of gulp is 3 to 4 years without changing the scent. I change out the scent and leave it in the Plano liquid bait containers and they perform exactly the same! I have gulp from 4 years plus and they still work.

No. If I say where I was, it's where I was. Usually I don't say. As for the slow drift, anything less than 0.5mph is usually tough because you don't cover enough ground and these fish are not usually very concentrated.

Thanks for the video I certainly learned a bunch. What is your rod and reel setup? It looks like you have a 2oz bucktail tied directly to the line and then a 2oz bucktail on a dropper loop about 18-24 inches above? I assume these are tied on fluro? To a barrel swivel? I really like your set up. I normally fish a hook on the lower with meat and then gulp on the top bucktail. White on white put the smack down on them!!!
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 4 года назад
Thanks for saying your learned something. If you check out the video description you'll find links to all of the gear, and a rig tying video. I'm using 30# Seaguar fluorocarbon for the rig here because it's rocky in places. I used the same rig the entire trip. That says a lot about Seguar Fluoro Blue.

@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 4 года назад
Congrats on your PB! Party boats cover a large area on every drift with 20-40+ rigs of all sorts out. They also attract other boats. In this video ours are the only rigs available to the fluke, as opposed to hundreds of rigs passing through the spot a mile or so in. Yes - those partyboat captains really know their stuff and likely know their areas as well as anyone. It's a big ocean though with lots of spots to fish. Sometimes by coincidence we end up by the partyboats, but we rather avoid them like on this trip.

Thanks for all the useful info John. I have a question about teasers. I've noticed you use a variety of teaser set ups. Not sure why and when you choose each. What factors do you consider and take into account when deciding whether to you use just a bare hook with your gulp vs a halo teaser skirt vs the glass minnow ? Thanks John.
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 4 года назад
When I'm fishing the ocean or deep bay for larger fish it's always the silicone skirt glass minnow. In the shallow south shore bay I prefer a plain hook. I'll use a plain hook or a tinsel tsunami glass minnow in Long Island Sound. I haven't used the holo teaser in years.
@dennismartin4523
@dennismartin4523 4 года назад
John Skinner Fishing Thank you for the reply. Does drift speed factor in teaser choice also ? Since the glass minnows weigh 3/8-1/2 oz do you use them to assist in really dialing in necessary weight for a particular spot ? Why the tinsel glass minnow ? Does it match a specific bait profile ? Is it because of clearer water and will reflect more effectively ? Do you use the larger swimming mullets or just the larger grubs ? What do you use if the drift is just too fast for even a 5 or 6 oz jig and you're already using 15# line but moving to a different spot is not an option ? Thank you

Hi john. I recently went fluking on a party boat. Caught one fluke in 4 hrs. Hardly any taps the whole trip. Because of the current I had to use 5 and 6 oz bucktails tipped with a gulp grub. As a teaser I used 5” grubs. I’ve had these results before out on deeper water when I’ve had to switch to heavy bucktails. I just keep wondering if the fluke are either afraid of it or it’s just too big for them. I eventually switched to a sinker and bait rig and started getting taps. And suggestions on improvising or adjusting my presentation when I’m forced to use more weight to hold bottom?
