@@catsdotcom It literally doesn't. It's "The Priest" in credits and in the script. Andrew and Phoebe talked a lot about this and they always emphasize that it's not what his character's actually called.

Fleabag breaks the fourth wall to talk to the imaginary audience because she is lonely but wont admit it and when the priest enters her secret space (the fourth wall), both the audience and fleabag are shocked. Fleabag after this scene immediately runs away from the fourth wall because she deems the fourth wall is no longer private and personal where she can criticise and be herself. She felt attacked and hence breaks off with the priest at that point in the story.

I don't know if this idea comes from the idea that gay people are hypersexual or what but in most media, the gay couples, even canon ones, I'm ignoring queerbaiting and coding here, aren't allowed to even kiss due to censorship and fear of alienating homophobic audience members. Secondly, straight relationships are considered the default and this does a huge disservice to the movies and tv shows portraying them. A male and female lead are obviously going to end up together so why would they need any build up? As opposed to gay relationships that require a lot of buildup as very few audience members expect them to end up together. Sorry for the essay, hope I made sense

That is the point, though. She is a fleabag and he is not the innocent victim. He uses alcohol as his coping mechanism. When he believes he fucked up with her and realizes that he fell for her more than he thought, he drinks. In a way, the fact that she send him away would be great, she even calls him 'father' and likely means it as it was intended, and she even later comes to church without any intention to meet him. He basically suceeded in his goal, not to make her catholic, but to try to reach god. He could have later meet her, apologise and go about his day. But it is too late. Yes, he wanted to help her, but he was not hanging with her for this reason. He is lonely, and he likes her, so he spends time with her. He was falling hard and his intentions were selfish - he could be with her, and he could drink and swear and maybe seem like the 'morally good person'. In one way, they both open themselves to another - her with her confession, with things she never admitted and feels ashamed for (not Boo incident, though) and him sexually, as his profession forbids - the profession he likely chose for this reason. When she points out that celibacy is horrible, he says that romantic relationships are worse. This was his escape from pain. Fleabag says she does not enjoy sex that much, she likes the tension, the build up, and uses sex (as well as breaking the fourth wall) to deflect. Priest deflects with religion, but he enjoys to flirt. He openly flirts with her from the first moment. He gave up sex, not flirting. And it allows him to play with fire without getting burned. The same can be said about alcohol, though. He likely was an addict as well. I believe that he wanted her to confess, and manipulated her. We can be quite certain that he did not plan the kneel thing, but the truth is he made a decision then. If you look closely, you see him close his eyes (am I this person?), and then open them (guess I am now).
