@MrMusicguyma
@MrMusicguyma 4 года назад
@@11calman Mate, it may be hard to justify that opinion. ;) This was Bill Kirchen's own comic and unique arrangement, honed over decades, of a simpler Charlie Ryan song from 1955. Bill began playing it with Commander Cody in 1970s. Later, as a solo act. Bill added all those tributes to the other guitar players and random folks. I will opine that Redd is the most versatile Tele player that I have ever heard and I have heard quite a few, including the Hellecasters, Albert Lee, James Burton, Danny Gatton, Roy Buchanan and on and on. Leo Fender's simple but innovative guitar is in good hands ;)

@@MrMusicguyma, Yes, at over 80yrs, I must confess that I have followed all those great players that you have mentioned, But I suppose that, because I live in the great Southern Hemisphere of Auckland New Zealand (where we are a day ahead of the rest of the world), Redd Volkaert's rhythm was most probable on NZ time, one step ahead.--- "Bill Kirchen" has always been great

Charlie Ryan wrote and recorded this tune. Charlie wrote this tune in response to Arkie Shibleys song Hot Rod Race in 1950 which the Melody is identicle to Hot Rod Lincoln, just slower. Charlie Ryan wrote Hot Rod Lincoln in 1955 as a single,the album by the same name was released in 1960. That was the first LP I ever bought. My album was signed by Charlie just before his passing in Spokane aprox.10 years ago. He signed the cover and the record multiple times,a character to say the least. A couple facts to get this blurb straight. The Lincoln is a 1955 and built by the railroaders in Livingston Montana. It was a V12 with overdrive, not a V8 as Commander Cody wrote. To fit the Model A's body on the Lincoln frame,the driveshaft had to be shortened two feet. A Minnesota native,he lived in Spokane and Libby Montana. He died in Spokane. If you listen to the late great Arkie Shibleys Hot Rod Race, I think he should be in the ranks of one of the first creators of Rock and Roll and in the Grand Ole Opera. Check him out please. He should be recognized as well as Charlie Ryan.

Bill and Redd were at the Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival in British Columbia last summer and they did this very same song. Bill Kirchen was at another festival that I was at a few years ago. I saw him walking around the festival grounds with his wife and I went up to him and told him that i really enjoyed his show and that he was my favourite performer of the festival. He was quite delighted to hear that and share a moment with a fan, as was his wife.

I saw Bill Kirchen play few years ago at a small venue in Richmond, Virginia. Having loved Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen way back in high school, it was a delight to hear him play. He had a Tele with no finish on the front - the wood was more faded and beat up than an old deck. I wanted to ask him about it and get a closer look at the few pedals he was using, so I tried at intermission. He couldn’t have been more friendly and approachable. He told me the Tele originally was a “burst” and showed me the one small spot on the back that still retained some finish. Funny, humble, and an absolute master of his instrument. Thanks Bill!
