Hot Salad Cheesewich (1965) on Sandwiches of History⁣

Not gonna lie, when I saw the name Hot Salad Cheesewich in The 1,000 Fabulous Sandwiches of 1965, my first thought was “oh no.” You might recall that a couple of weeks ago I made the “Something Special” from Williams’ Sandwich Recipes of 1974 which had us put lettuce and tomato on a piece bread (along with other items) and heat the whole thing up. Thankfully, this ain’t that. No, this name is using salad much in the way “potato salad” is a “salad.” And what sounded like it might be a disaster turned out to be kinda tasty. Love it when that happens.

"Hot salad" is most certainly a very cursed phrase.

As you have documented often and well on your channel, historical recipes had severe issues with omitting amounts and measurements. Not as frequently, but still fairly often, there seem to be issues with order of operations. The tomato and pickles being put on the toast prior to going back in to melt the cheese mixture...I guess that's how the sandwich got it's name, but it would make more sense to melt the cheese on first, then top with the tomato and pickles afterwards. Your dedication to the recipe as written is admirable! Keep 'em coming, Barry.

I get something similar on a bagel at a shop in my old hometown. Cream cheese instead of sour cream, and the cheese is a slice melted on top; also no cucumber. My plus up is alfalfa sprouts and hot sauce. (Yes, I come from the 70’s.)

I started at "those words are in the wrong order", then it seemed okay as you mixed them up. A success! I always liked making grilled cheese but with Heinz's sandwich spread under the cheese - so that's what I'm imagining here... Probably wrongly!

Day 58 of asking Barry to make the sandwich I submitted!~~ “Hot salad” and “good” are words I thought I would never hear together. Here I stand corrected! Cheers Barry!

This turned out better than I'd have expected. I'd minus down the pickle, maybe replace the cuke with chopped pickle instead, but the rest sounds pretty decent.

Man, I love your videos. Every day, I can't wait. Here's a question. Do you ever think of, how do I say this? Do you ever think of "plussing something down," like... maybe a sandwich would be better *without* one of its ingredients. "This sandwich would really be better with no nutmeg, so let's plus it down" Minus it up? I know that'd take some extra planning and maybe take away from the spontaneity, though, so I get it.

yeah but once the sandwich is assembled it can be difficult to remove ingredients. From time to time I do Recipe Remixes but that's more of a total overhaul.

Hot Salad does sound terrible, a candidate to toss in the bin. However, the idea of a grilled veg sandwich topped with melty cheese sounds way better. Yea, I think I'd grill the tomato lightly along with some peppers. Top with a seasoned cream cheese with shredded other cheese too, and under the broiler. I'm hungry now, time to start supper

Cumin is truly a wünder-sauce. It lifts up just about everything and is apparently the second most used spice in the world after pepper. So if you were looking for a boring and unnecessary factoid then there ya go! ☮

Once I saw the name VS ingredients, I realized the name on it's own probably causes the sandwich to lose at least half a point.

A toasted “open faced sandwich” is just toast. The League of Nations clearly defined a “sandwich” as being two slices of bread. This happened in the 1950s. Someone should have told you. Memos were sent out!
