With a name like the Watercress, Lettuce, Sardines, Shrimps, and Oysters Sandwich, there’s not a lot of mystery as to what is in this sandwich from 1914’s Neighborhood Cook Book. There is one ingredient, aside from bread, that isn’t listed but there’s no recipe for that. So I had to dig one up from another 1914 cookbook. Good times. And yes, I wear shorts when it’s summer. Just sayin’.

At some point, we're gonna run out of sandwich recipes. I'm not looking forward to that day. I've become addicted to these.

Nah. That's like saying because there's only 12 notes, we're going to run out of songs to write. Imo.

I thought that too when I started, then I came across 1,001 Sandwiches of 1936 and The Fabulous 1,000 Sandwiches of 1964. With little to no overlap. And that's just two books. Add in international sandwiches, sandwiches of our history, and sandwiches of recent history and well, it may well out live me! Glad you like em!

One day, I want a tour of Barry's cabinets and refrigerator to see where all of these condiments and plus-ups come from. How do you have room for all of these?

Probably correct in using canned. Think canned seafoods were popular, partly due to the lack of decent refrigeration (both delivery and home) at the time. Canneries were all along the coast. Re-visit would be nice tho'.

Toasted French bread and freshly grated lemon zest would make this a very yummy seafood sandwich!

Honestly, I could see making that as a Po'Boy, turn that vinaigrette into an aioli and serve it on a crusty roll

A few grains of cayenne? Is Chef John a time traveller? I really just came here to say that I love tinned seafood, especially the ones in this sandwich, and I would hammer this. HAMMER it. I'd probably make it a little differently, but the concept? I'm with it.

Wow, rolls right off the tongue, this one. Probably never caught on as by the time you've finished ordering it, your waiter has moved on to the next table.

Sort of reminds me of putting a local delicacy on bread: West Indies salad as a sandwich. Except I substitute good Sicilian olive oil in the place of vegetable oil

@@DeborahMaufer basically a sort of crab ceviche. It has onions, blue crab meat, cider vinegar, some ice water, salt, pepper, and oil. That’s the basic recipe

I will definitely make a version of this - here in the Southern states, watercress is easy to find.

You should be able to get watercress in asian markets. When i buy it in chinese stores i have to wash it over and over untill all the mini snails are gone. A Korean store also has it, and no snails - definitely a different supplier.

You can get cooked fresh sardines in Monterey. Every restaurant on the wharf. Grilled, usually. Nom. Don't know if you can find fresh sardines in any fish markets there.

Why couldn't the sandwich be called the seafood and greens sandwich? Much easier to say.

Okay, so I know that YOU didn't name the sandwich, Barry. You just read it out of the cookbook - but I really feel obligated to "plus-up" the darned name, before one of your viewers inadvertently sprains their tongue trying to say "Watercress, Lettuce, Sardines, Shrimps, & Oysters Sandwich". I mean, safety first, you know what I'm saying? So, in the interest of public safety might I suggest calling it the "So, your doctor said you needed more sea food sandwich". Or, possibly, "The empty-your-cupboard sandwich".
