Gimmicks have been "A Thing" in Pokemon Card Collecting for quite some time. While "The Chase" for Pokemon Cards used to exist as a simple Holo Rare, The Pokemon Card Company has had to figure out new and unique ways to keep their fan base happy by releasing new card types throughout the years.
New Ultra Rares, Prime Cards, Legend Cards, Prism Stars, Breaks, and even more Pokemon Card Rarities have been introduced to keep things fresh in the Pokemon Market. Some of these updates hit well. Others, missed the boat. However, Pokemon 151 really changed the game for Pokemon Collectors. The introduction of the Master Ball reverse holo brought a whole new level to limited cards and exclusivity that drew in a ton of Pokemon Fans. The exclusion of this rarity from Scarlet and Violet 151 left many fans disappointed as "the chase" seemed to be lacking.

Pokemon collecting has now become a hobby I share every once in a while with my mom. It’s been awesome that way, and in our first four 151 packs she got the charizard alt art :). In 16 total packs we both shared she also got the normal full art charizard and the full art charmeleon. Luckiest woman alive.

Dude same!!! She lives in Puerto Rico and every once in a while she’ll FaceTime me to ask if she should buy some stuff at Walgreens, Walmart, Costco- whatever and we’ve opened packs together in person and over FaceTime. She hasn’t gotten many pulls but she brings them along. My kid is also working on his collection, first completed set was the Halloween set (earning packs through a sticker/chore chart 😅). I keep his hits from random packs within my collection in specific sleeves(anything found in those sleeves are his) and keeping them safe from being traded with kids 😂

Here is what may be my unpopular opinion. As a former sports card collector I actually don’t want numbered cards to come to the Pokémon card world. The reason why is set building. You basically make it impossible to complete sets when you start making too many variants and serial numbered cards. Will it make those cards worth more? Yes. But will it make the other cards worth less? Absolutely. Short printed variants are good to chase so long as they are attainable.

As for the gimmick, the idea of a randonly seeded Shiny version of regular holo cards theoughout the set is WAY overdue. It would be an incredible way to showcase some of the really good art that shows up on a lot of normal Pokemon cards AND make it valuable and sought-after. It fits the in-game gimmick of shinies as well. Strange that they haven't done it before.

Agreed i can't even keep up with the newer Pokemon sets in scarlet and violet while it would be easy to do so i've been collecting older sets i've missed out on an from black and white and pokemon from the 2000s to pokemon sun and moon there's so much amazing cards it's hard to choose to buy this card 0r that card hehe i rambled a bit

I was so disappointed when English 151 didn't recieve the masterball reverses. They were such a genius idea! Really adds to the chase and they are just reverses, so I think it would go down okay. Japanese gets all the best shit it's so unfair like Japanese Classic Collection is night and day better than English. It's frustrating how much better some cards/sets are.

Just after 151 came out in Japan, a guy at my mall was selling packs and i bought 4 for $7 each. I managed to pull the aerodactyl master ball holo and back then I had no idea how lucky I was lol.

Ive always wanted a set where, in 1/36 packs roughly, theres a shiny version of one random pokemon from the set. All that would change from the base card was that it was holo with an exclusive sparkle holo pattern and the colors were swapped to be shiny from the original card art. For example, if Paldean Fates were to do that and a regular uncommon Wigglytuff was holo *in the reverse holo slot* and was color swapped, that would be like the masterball card.

Loved the Japanese 151 set. Opened two booster boxes and have two stashed for when my son is old enough to rip them with me in several years. Can’t wait (besides it meaning my baby grew up)

@@DannyPhantump yeah, it flies by so fast. Everyone says it but you can’t really comprehend it fully until you’re in it. My little man turns 1 in February. So I’ve got plenty of time to enjoy other stuff with him before his pokemon collecting phase. Although we may only be ripping one of those stashed boxes if the value goes way up by then haha. It will be his first lesson in collecting sealed product.

Sincerely appreciate the awesome video Danny! Man I wish English 151 had the master ball. Could you imagine with how well English 151 has done how much more hype it would have if it had the masterball as well! I've been wanting to buy some Japanese 151 booster boxes to open and keep some sealed because I do think that set will go up in value pretty quickly especially once it's pretty much for sure done being printed. It's just already so expensive so it's a tough pill to swallow spending $200 if you're lucky but usually looks like it's $225 or more here in the U.S and it's not super easy to find

Great video as usual. I have been talking about 151 since it released I still believe despite not knowing every future set in 2024, that 151 will be the staple set of this block. The reverses don’t do it for me I’m sticking with English still. The prices are shocking of Japanese reverses I’ll admit but that sounds like chasing the stonk. I think there’s still a lot of value in English and less risk. Especially with tik tok deals.

One Piece has done a good job with having alt arts in every box but having manga rares or the signed Oda card as the big very rare chase. Keep the SARs the same rate but add 1 or 2 special cards, something like the XY secret rares, make them 1 out of every 5 cases

@@fernandomarroquin8901 but a lot of the artists don’t do signings for that reason, or simply can’t do events for various reasons - so my thought is this could be a digitally-imposed signature on a few of the cards thrown into random packs, featuring the artists own flair, not unlike the stamped promos. I imagine that would be fun for the artists too, as many of them could design their own logo signatures if they wanted for specific sets that their art is featured in specifically for this purpose (consider some of Arita’s cards from Unified Minds, having a super rare alt version emblazoned with his signature in a bold pink and purple metallic foil that compliments the set identity). They wouldn’t have to physically sign, it could be like promo stamps. But I understand where you’re coming from - I’m just thinking of creative things that wouldn’t impact the meta of the game, but could be an awesome opportunity for fans opening the products, making it that much more potentially thrilling while celebrating the artist. For example, pulling the 151 Blastoise embellished with Mitsuhiro Arita’s signature would make me burst into tears. They could even make it more discreet, not so in your face, by formatting it to fit in the space the artist attributions already are. I’m thinking this into being obviously. 😂

I loved the idea of the masterballs, I ended up pulling my masterball pikachu out of a Japanese poster collection, so they weren’t just in booster boxes, so odds are just 1 in 20 packs. Since there’s a 1 in 165 chance that the mb you pull is pikachu, you only have a .06% chance of pulling it out of a booster box. So since in theory your odds of pulling a masterball is 1/20 packs, the true odds of getting a pikachu is .03%. With odds like that, it makes sense it’s going for so much

I'm glad I grabbed a Masterball Rare Vaporeon a while ago. Prices have been steasily rising for all of those cards. I might buy a few more to try get one that'll grab a Black Label 10.

The thing I worry about is the rarity creep. Look at what that has done to holos and ultra rares. Barely any value there and you can open 20+ packs and only pull those rarities. I think adding something like numbered cards or one per case/box just means your average pull value shifts to one card. I think we don't see the extended effects of a rarity like this

Hugely agree. Every card should have a limited option. All the way from a common bulbasaur all the way up to the Erika secret rare. Numbered or starred or master ball, whatever, it needs more.

As ridiculously hard it is to complete the set with the master balls in mind... we also need to remember what TCG's are. They are TRADING card games. You aren't meant to be able to complete the set by opening boxes upon boxes. You are meant to open an amount you are happy with and then trade with others to complete the sets. People also need to remember that it is not a race, completing these sets (especially of this calibre) should be a long term journey that you can enjoy. Go to card events or join online groups for trades! Don't spend your life savings completing these sets!

Got into 151 during a visit to Japan last Summer. Didn’t get a lottery pick to buy them at release, so that fueled my quest to collect. 2 days later, bought some raw 151 singles at a local Japanese second hand store. Now I’m just buying Japanese 151 PSA 10’s for the best price online.

I like the idea of 1 seated hit per box, but trying to collect 153 “hits” in one set is really discouraging. I would rather have a seated SAR/alt art that can only hit on booster boxes.

I think gimmicks in sets are a no-brainer. At best, like Master Balls, they can turn into insane chase cards with several benefits. At worst, like peelable Dittos in Pokémon Go, they add a bit of value and are mostly forgotten in time. I can’t think of too many gimmick applications that would be objectively bad!

Reverse master ball would be too much for mastering a set. It's cool but I couldn't imagine the money spent to get these additional cards. 151 wasn't the best with pull rates but challenging enough to collect. I feel like it mainly comes down to whether or not they print it to the ground. If they stopped printing now, I think prices would appreciate well.

I would like another chase aside from the main hits. Something about the change from yellow to silver is still hitting me the wrong way for English sets. But I was pretty mad when they didn’t have the master ball in the English 151 as well as taking out good chases/hits to use as promos in additional product which Pokémon seems to love to do. I would like to see the premium sets take this approach with the larger main sets staying the same for the most part. Keep the premium sets for the chase/value collectors and the main sets for master sets and competitive players. I would not want the “set” hit rates for what Japanese product has though. It takes away some of the excitement waiting to see what’s in your BB. However I would like to get some of the QC😂. It killed me when that SIR mew and mew 2 were made into a promo. I would also like them to do something with Holos. Make them great again or something. Not just reverse rares getting the upgraded treatment.

I have mixed feelings on the master ball “Uber chase”. I definitely think it’s cool to find the master ball, especially for a Pokemon you like, but I have been more interested in collecting now that getting hits is easier than ever before. Scarlet and Violet improved the hobby, in my opinion, for collectors by having holos in every pack and having 2 reverses in each pack. The number of possible IRs and SIRs also make the chase pretty strong already.

I've got an English 151 Master set 98% completed, and a Japanese 151 99% complete, including 6 Masterballs. I went with cards I thought had good artwork, so went Mewtwo, Arcanine, Electrode, and then Dratini/Dragonair/Dragonite. I swagged the latter 3 for laround £80, so I'm hoping I did ok in the long run!

They need to create set for Blastoise and Venursaur. In addition, they also need to be transparent on pull rate and keep it the same. Last but not least, they need to FIX the quality of the card. Pulling chase cards has less than 50% of a PSA 10 contender these days.. In the 151 set, there are dings on squrtile, bulbsaur, charmander and etc...... The quality for charizard (151) is a nightmare. why are people paying hundred of dollars to pull any PSA 9 or under quality cards when you can buy the single less than 40 dollars in most cases

151 was the first time I bothered collecting modern cards. I mastered it was every stamp variant as well. (English). It was the first time all 151 were in a single set, the return of Kadabra after Uri's grandchildren warmed his heart to the franchise. Also the first time cards have been numbered using dex numbering. It was very good, it could had been a lot better, the trainers and items coulda been more Kanto/ Gen 1 focused. I woulda liked rarity to be more inline with how rare the Pokemon were in the original Red & Blue video games. Theres a few other things I would had liked the set to had done, but I dont want to get too into the weeds, but bringing back 1st editions, would be one.

maybe once a year put out a set with a masterball type of chase, id say dont over do it or its less unique

How would they implement the master ball in English? The Japanese were seeded in booster boxes that don’t exist in English specialty sets and the Japanese booster boxes are much smaller than English booster boxes
