I went from "Hot Tents Suck" to "Hot Tents Don't Suck". What made me change my mind? Check out the video. My Luxe Mini Peak XL Hot Tent and 3RG Titanium Wood Stove are great. I take them out for a first trip and give a tour in the video.

Big tip.. cut the wood to fit in stove(three inches shorter than stove) then use a hatchet to split. I use a bowsaw to cut logs. I can process the wood i need for 3 days ,in about 30 mins .

Dude. There was so much blood. Should’ve shown more! Lol glad you found a reason to get a hot tent. Would it be open and honest in this one bro. Not that you aren’t open honest normally… OK I’ll stop now. Cheers.

One possibility to try is to carry a small bag of already cut tinder and small splits from home. That cuts down that much more prep time in camp.

I am probably getting a hot tent for backcountry hunting purposes. Seems like the best way to camp in my opinion. My main purpose on why I am leaning towards a hot tent is to dry clothing out at the end of the day. Clothes, boots and many other things can get wet while hunting and a hot tent can dry that out better than a campfire. Something else I have noticed/heard from other people that do this is your stove pipe for the tent you used in the video could be cut a lot shorter if you wanted to. Higher is better, but I have heard form experienced hunters that the pipe can be about 2 feet higher than the tent and that would be plenty high enough.

I just got my stove and hot tent in! Smokehouse outfitter, it can fit my hammock! I'm very excited to get it out. But listen, practice that wood gnoming skills... As a long time camper who maybe just stuck and axe in his foot at Thanksgiving! Luckily it was at home and I missed everything important!!

Hot tenting is a way of life. I love it. Nothing better than the crackle of the wood stove. May I suggest adding a baffle to your stove, and if you don't a flue damper. By doing so, you're able to cook alot more effectively and efficiently. Also, another wood stove tip. Put your main logs down, criss cross your tinder and light it from the top down with your damper open. It's called the Sweedish Fire lay and works well. Great video as always! I'd love to do an ultralight hot tent set up.

Ya the logs on the bottom trap all goal and really helps if you’re struggling to get the fire going up top.

Welcome to the hot tenting team! haha knew we'd win you over in some capacity. I'm glad you didn't try to keep a fire going all night in there with that small titanium stove. You did it the right way. Enjoy the heat, get sleepy and go to bed. Wake up and start that fire up for a nice hot coffee. My bigger stoves and better tents i can run all night since I can get a good 3 hour burn on them but those titanium ones are not worth the effort at night..... PS remember this video? haha ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CDnggpX2yUw.htmlsi=3OneJTtNM76AU1tH

Been using a Coleman Sportcat catalytic heater for over 20 years. Not sure they are still available. A lot easier than all that. Regular backpacking tent 2-3 person. Start it on high and you are putting it on low within 5 minutes. A half hour or so at bedtime, another half hour or hour in the morning, makes all the difference.

Hell must have froze over, Jeremy got a hot tent!!! Lol!!! We heard all about your slicing of your thumb at the get-together in Iowa, and the pics with all the blood all around looked like a stuck deer bleeding all over. Looks like a nice little set up. Maybe see you new years eve.

Hey man, loved the video! I love my hammock, but I've been looking at hot tents lately since the wife said she'd winter camp with me that way. Lol Please, if it isn't too much trouble, you have to tell me where your friend got that, what looks to be a, wool cloak. Looks like it was gifted to him by the elves of Rivendell. Lol

Bloody fire wood burns way better. I suppose I’ll have to give in and get myself a hot tent setup soon. Winter camping is so much more enjoyable without the people and the bugs.

If that tent had more space and I planned on base camping in it for several days, it might be worth the effort. Backpacking to a new site each night....not a chance.

Uncanny! I've been following you for about a year now and recognized Afton from that overlook before then eagerly waiting to see if you'd mention the location to see if I was right! Love that park! I live right here in Woodbury so I do 8+ overnights there a year through the winter as one of my easy/last minute trip pick of locations. Did you know there was parking on north end of the park? About the same distance to the campsites but much less ridges to climb (through the field) and totally different scenery so I often park there when I have an especially heavy backpack this time of year before the snowcover is enough for a pulk... avoid those stairs if you know what I mean! Though the exercise is great too! Lovely video!

Try a game card for hauling your gear! The one big difference of a wood stove is dry heat and no frost inside the tent soaking everything.

You'll need to get a new chimney. There is a better way to do solo. Leave as small roll (how comes) and start twisting your hands and keep spreading and spacing O-Rings as you go. Quick and does not ruin with crinkles
@MidwestBackpacker

Yeah. I got a new one. User error when rolling the first time on this on. After it is burned in, it isn’t that hard.

I enjoy hot tenting. My tent base-weight setup with a nice/fast fold stove (15" long) is just under 20 lbs. It can be done at reasonable weight. That's with Xtherm pad, tables, saw, fans, etc. All my kit is well thought out though. Need to do it that way to keep weight down and lux high.

MULTIPLE CHOICE QUESTION: A) It's more efficient to axe the logs, then saw the wedges in half... B) The other way around... or C) It doesn't really matter (And I'm like you. I need to practice chopping wood more)
@MidwestBackpacker
@MidwestBackpacker 10 месяцев назад
If you saw in half before spitting, you can use a smaller axe and that part is much easier.

LOL... I literally watched your "Hot tents suck" video yesterday and used it to talk myself out of buying a hot tent. Enjoyed the video very much! I can definitely see the appeal of having a hot tent but the weight and the work do seem like a big detractor. Just wondering if you considered any of the hammock-friendly hot tents? Us Ridgerunner folk definitely have fewer options but it seems doable.
@MidwestBackpacker

I think hammock hot tents are too big to keep warm efficiently and i worry about my underquilt getting burned. Who knows, maybe I’ll change my mind on that too! 😜
