In this video I'm talking about thinning of the hair and if sisterlocks has anything to do with it. It's a serious issue that many of our are going through. Women and men around the world are either dealing with Alopecia or thinning. I'm speaking about some of the possible causes. And also some remedies that could possibly help.

Hi Faye. It is so interesting that you are talking about this topic... I too am part of several Sisterlocks groups and communities and I noticed that many people are having the same complaints about their hair thinning due to their consultant retightening too tight. I am a retired certified Sisterlocks Consultant and I actually teach how to obtain hydrated, faster-growing, fuller-looking Sisterlocks. For the last 2 years I've been retightening my own hair. When I first started, it was awkward. I did not realize that I was tightening too tight and my hair started thinning, especially in the top and crown area of my head. After I noticed this, I stopped going down too close to my roots by not going around that last rotation. Since then my hair has filled in and my hair has gotten thicker...no more hair loss...I've also incorporated "steaming," massaging and exclusively using my Beautiful Hair Products Moisturizing System. My hair is the healthiest, most hydrated, and fastest growing, it has ever been. Consistency is key! I feel you though. You mentioned that you retie your front and crown of your head; you might need to takeover your own hair care and retightening. It can be difficult to RT the back, but it's doable. And you're right, most often you don't need to RT as often as some people, depending on how fast your hair grows, every 6-8 weeks is a good schedule, while being as gentle as possible. You hit the nail on the head again when you said, some consultants are not concerned about hair care but only the money. All that you've said is so interesting, because I go over all those points in my 5 day, Steaming Your Sisterlocks Challenge! In fact, I teach from my book called, "5 Mistakes That Keep Your Sisterlocks Dry Slow-Growing And Thin: Especially Mistake #3!" It's a free downloadable ebook on my website. If you're interested, go there to get your free copy www.BeautifulHairProducts.com By the way, I am the creator, CEO, and owner of Beautiful Hair Products- A New System For Caring For Your Sisterlocks... Check things out and let me know if I can assist you further. Peace. René Michelle Floyd ❤️

I had thinning to my crown area after having sisterlock installed. I was going to a consultant that was good however the retie was too tight for my sensitive scalp especially at the crown. I found another consultant and mentioned to her to please not retie my locs tightly and since then my hair is growing and have gotten much thicker at the roots. Ladies it's so important to pay attention to these warning signs. Excessive itching/pain after reties my be telling you something

I feel you sis! I currently have small locs. I used to have them retwisted at a salon for natural hair. However I found the stylists way too rough. After a retwist my scalp would feel as though it was on fire, it was even difficult to put my head on the pillow at night. Realisation dawned gradually when I would look at my hair in a magnifying mirror after a retwist and noticed that a lot of the hair at the base of the twists had been pulled out at the roots. I was still going to hair salons but the last straw for me was when the stylist doing my hair did the twists so tightly I actually felt physically sick. Seriously, it was like some kind of torture (and for those who are asking, yes I would ask for the ‘gentlest’ stylist as I have a very sensitive scalp. However they would quickly forget and go back to being ‘rough’. Reminding them frequently seemed to annoy them so I just continued to suffer in silence). From then on I decided I would retwist my hair myself. I am currently going the ‘semi-free form’ route, which I find suits my scalp - and has now become the ‘low-maintenance’ style that I was looking for in the first place. So ladies, be very, very careful whose hands you allow in your hair, my personal experience is that most of them (yes, not 50%, MOST!) are rough (heavy-handed) as heck! PS: I am also very ‘thin on top’ and have been since I was a teenager (I’m now in my late 50s). The salon retwists (especially the last one) gave me a ‘scalpy’ look that I felt really self-conscious about. I still have to arrange my hair for minimum ‘scalpiness’, however it’s been much easier since I’ve been doing it myself.

I find your video the most honest. I noticed my hair was thinning on the crown and edges. My locktician was a licensed beautician and she seemed at a lost or didn’t care. I was recommended to see a trichologists and she recommended tightening every (4) weeks and a very expensive plan. I also do a dermatologist who had Sisterlockes & she said don’t have them tighten so tight. “ Have you thought about taking the class and doing your own hair?” I don’t have the patience for that. I finally had the big chop and went through a depression. My natural hair is so dry and I had a plethora of products in my bathroom cabinet. I really would have liked to have kept my lockes but the rate I was going, I would have been bald. My hair is finally being beat to submission. I have found a beautiful natural stylist which id helping ( although it is growing slowly). I loved my long hair but would be afraid to get the Sisterlockes again because I fear it would kill all my hair follicles.

I am also seeing another dermatologist recommended by a friend who had alopecia and I am getting the steroid injections which are seeming to work. Praying and trying to stick to one recommendation rather than using so many different products. By the way, I had my Lockes for almost 9 years and they grew beautifully initially. I just believe that it is not a style for a long time.

ANSWERS to why locks are falling out, or hair at the scalp is thinning, or spaces are getting wider: Very simple 1) TWISTING: The twisting or retighten of the hair at the scalp. I haven’t seen many people with locks ( of any kind of locks) who don’t have thinning. 2) FREQUENCY: the frequency of twisting and re-tying the hair, 3) FRICTION: the friction of the tool pushing through and then pulling back through the hair POPS the hair WITHIN each lock not just around each lock. If it was AROUND each lock, then the lock wouldn’t fall out, 4) DRYNESS: To my knowledge sister locks can not have much product so therefore the hair is dry which is a big No No when adding friction like pushing and pulling that tool through at the root every 6-8 weeks. 5) DIET: Poor diet such as Sugar and excessive fatty food causes inflammation in The body which can cause lack of blood circulating to the scalp and balding/hair falling out. 6) HEAVINESS/LENGTH: As the hair grows the weight of the hair on each already THINED lock strand is excessive. It’s not the same as having loose long hair. We want long hair but if your hair is fine and low density then you SHOULD keep your locks shorter to prevent excessive weight on each square grid. Keep them cut to just past shoulder length to decrease weight and heaviness pulling on the scalp. The LONGER the lock, the heavier it is. 7) REATTACHING: I don’t recommend Reattaching fallen locks to broken strands as it is only adding more weight and tension on the scalp. I work in healthcare with people who have a had strokes. When that arm is weak or paralyzed it ultimately becomes a heavy like a weight to the shoulder and pulls on muscles/tendons/ligaments resulting in a space called subluxation. This is what happens to each lock as it grows and pulls. 8) LENGTH: once again the longer the hair being pulled through at the retighten appointment the more friction on the scalp hair. For instance, if you are pulling 6 inches of hair through there is less friction than pulling 20 or 30 inches of hair through that tiny space and the more chance of hairs popping at the root. So keep your hair cut to just below shoulder length. Try these suggestions and I pray that you all have healing and new growth.

Okay so I have fine/thin hair . On a lot of medications, this is my regimen and it works for me. After installation and yes she is also a licensed Hair Stylist. The first thing is I changed my diet, I’m serious about my water intake, I take 10,000 mcg of Biotin daily, I use powdered collagen specifically Dr.Axe formula daily in whatever I’m drinking that morning. Early on I stopped my stylist from reti s every 6 weeks and I only shampoo my hair twice every 10 weeks once 3, weeks after my reti and once right before I go in for my tenth week. I make sure my locs have not married, so she doesn’t pull them apart ( I hear the ripping too). I also use a daily moisturizer and liquid biotin as well. And I rarely manipulate my hair with styles. I’m a diabetic, I have hypertension as well as heart disease. And I don’t stress Period❤ So knock on wood it’s all still there. Hope some of that helps.

Thank you for this video. I have the same issue with thinning in my crown area. I was actually diagnosed with “cicatricial alopecia” and it has stopped itching once I started sister locks but I am also using 5% topical minoxidil which has helped tremendously with the burning and itching. I totally agree that sisterlocks can potentially thin your hair out if it’s too tight. This is a much needed topic to consider before starting sisterlocks. We tend to believe since it is a natural hair style that it would resolve our hair braking / thinning issues, but in a way it can take on the same issues as tight braids, which will thin your hair over time. Thank you so much for this video. It so important to be transparent. 😍❤️💯

Thanks for sharing. I’m in year 3 of my Sisterlocks journey. I started experiencing hair loss about a year ago. The locs would just grow to a certain point, get thin at the too and then just break off. I’ve been to two different dermatologists and was told they have no idea what’s going on. My Sisterlocks consultant is also at a loss. It’s just very disheartening and you hate to just cut them off and waste that investment. Plus I love the versatility that comes along with them. I’m gonna look at diet changes and see if that helps. Thanks for sharing this video. It’s always good to know you’re not alone in your struggles.

I ended turning my moms locs around who had hers done by a (fake consultant) by the Grace of God I learned how to reti locs very quickly. One of the things I did was didn't reti her locs so tight she was always complaining about the soreness. She has always had a good diet and drink a lot of water. The one tip I would definitely say try is don't let anyone reti your locs so tight there needs to be some slack between your scalp and that last rotation. I think it's a neatness thing with us but this form of loc maintenance can be damaging to the follicles of our hair if pulled to tight .

I just completely my first self retightening. It took me forever but I'm so glad I did it myself. As I was going through I noticed multiple smooth spots on my scalp. Thanks for your transparency in this vid!!!! I have the same issue with thinness that you have. I’ve been sisterlock’d for 5 1/2 years…I ended up getting a 2nd opinion and that’s when the topic of traction alopecia came up and going to a dermatologist. I was in shock b/c I’d been going to my initial loctician for years even when I was a loose natural AND she held a cosmetology license too! I was disappointed that she didn’t take accountability (she mentioned that trimming locs twice a year would help the thinness issue as well as a change in diet) but the real issue was her retightening my locs too tight and wanting me to stick to a rigid 4-6 week retightening schedule which was too frequent for my hair (which I learned after getting the 2nd opinion and going to my dermatologist) I am thankful that I switched locticians when I did. I currently get scalp injections, use a rosemary spray and also use Qhemet Biologics Castor & Amla Nourishing Pomade on the thin areas. I also take Nutrafol hair supplements. This has all helped me and I’m slowly seeing some growth in my thin areas! However, I’ve also made the decision to big chop my Sisterlocks for the health of my hair. I’ve loved my locs journey but I feel that the health of my hair is most important. I had thick kinky hair before I made the decision to get loc’d, and have faith my thin areas will return back to its glory state.

I have traditional pencil sized locs and thinning and can happen on sister locs or traditional locs so we have to be especially careful when retwisting too tight or too often (traditional locs) or re-ting too tight for those w/ sister locs. IMO I think it depends on our general health as well as meds we take and the care of our hair that will determine whether or not you experience thinning.

When I was younger they did all kind of blood test but they never did a sonogram it was only when I was an adult maybe about 12 years ago that the doctor I had at that time she added a ultrasound on my thyroid and it was found out that I had two large quarters on both lobes. So every year I get a ultrasound or sonogram and every other year I get a biopsy just to make sure it's not cancerous. But I'm on medication and my sister likes helped my hair because I'm going to be locked for life

Sure those things can cause Hair thinning- however you are saying this to say what ???? 80% of SL heads I have seen post 5 years are thinning !!!! Traction alopecia isn't just due to tightness of a re-tie - it's hair being pulled via tool ( the size of it) going thru such a small base - thus pulling hairs weakening and damaging the follicles- period

I recently installed micro loca a month ago because I literally wore scarfs for 10 years because of thinning in the front. It’s been a month and I can see thin spots filling in! I am so hopeful that this going to work for me! My hair is long in the back and not enough to even make a bang in the front! Just see through with 10 different lengths! @@fayeslocdlife5071 Hey Faye! thanks for the reply. I think a good show would be talking about how committed you need to be to your hair once you decide to get locks and understanding that locks look different on everybody and no two people are going to look the same with them. Also, some tips for those awkward in between stages and things you can do to ease the shock of that plucked chicken faze. I saw a YTuber state that you shouldn’t wash your new locks for the first 6 weeks or you may get slippage, after 3 days my hair felt like tree bark! My tip that has worked wonders for me is instead of spraying my hair with a water bottle everyday I use my clothes steamer and hold it back from my head and let the steam travel to my locks an they become so soft and moisturized and afterwards I take some very lite oil like grape seed and go over them and my hair stays soft and doesn’t get dry or brittle the whole week!

I have alopecia on one of my edges so when I chose my consultant I chose one who was a certified trichologist.. she’s extra gentle around that area and even offers treatments for the spots. She will talk to you about going to dermatologist for hair loss which I do. It has been amazing. My first re-tie was too tight for me so my scalp was inflamed and broke out she had me come in unscheduled so she could look at my scalp to make sure nothing else was going on and did my next re-tie looser. She said this is a conversation if something is hurting me let her know or she would just keep going because if she doesn’t visibly see anything wrong she is not going to stop. So my whole experience has been amazing

@@fayeslocdlife5071 Greetings from the U.K. I know you said you’re hair thinning could be hereditary but I still recommend Floradix iron pills and not the ones from the doctors because the ones from the doctors are not for us . ( our bodies don’t absorb them ) and high does of D3 combined with K2 . I’m not. a doctor but I’ve had thinning temples for literally decades and stress causes thinning for me in general along with the menopause. I tried so many things to use topically. Castor oil , hair growth oil, pumpkin seed oil, ect and nothing worked so I thought maybe it’s a health thing I know one thing for sure, I was heavily anaemic. This is just a suggestion.

@fayeslocdlife5071 5 месяцев назад
I know they are tiny, and you do have to be careful with them. Too much pulling can litterally pull them off. That is why I took over my retightening because some of the locticians don't care about what is going on in your hair. One time a loctician actually pull one of my lock's off while retighenting my hair. She tried to hide it, then when I asked her did she pull a lock off she tried to blame me for it! ha smh I love this hair style but it's a journey.

Did they say why? It does depend on what's going on in your hair, though. If your hair is thinning, I wouldn't tell you to get locks that will get heavier over time. I would suggest that you have a dermatologist or tricologist look at your head before you decide on anything. Then discuss with them the type of style you want to get. Then see what they recommend.
