Since I’m sure the responsibility of care and maintenance will fall on me, I decided to check RU-vid for tips and here we are. Your video has given me the confidence to take an my new duties. Thanks Jeff. I learned a ton from this as a new hot tub owner. i was using Baqua spa a 3 liquid system. My hot tub was covered in a brown substance. I drained it today and scrubbed the entire hot tub and it is very clean. I am switching to chlorine now. I didn't know about bromine until this video. I already put chlorine in the tub so I will see how that works. Do you have any experiences with Baqua spa? I am curious. A ton of people say that it leaves a brown residue and the water is very foamy, which is my experience. Also I did not know about the plumbing. UGH! I just drained the tub and refilled it! Next time I will clean the plumbing with the chemical that you recommended.

@@Pokeman_official1 Yes yes :D finally. I posted the video on my channel of the new setup. Going to finally soak in it this weekend. Also, DO NOT follow the directions about putting two capfuls of Chorine Granduals into the hot tub for the initial setup of chemicals. WAAAAAY too much. Also, my directions said to put in the first chemical and then wait 5 minutes before putting in the next chemical. That is a BIG NO. Wait at least 30 minutes in between chemicals, and DO NOT close the lid after putting in chemicals, let it sit for at least 30 mins or so before closing the lid.

Thank you for this helpful information We just bought a home with a hot tub. The hot tub was on when we lifted the pad cover . We were informed that in our climate (we live in Seattle) we need to leave it on as it keeps away mold. It seems weird to me to leave it running all the time. Can you shed some light on this please? Thanks 👍🏾
@HotTubOwnerHQ
@HotTubOwnerHQ 3 года назад
Hi S3. Yes, unless you'll be gone on vacation more than 3-4 weeks, or don't plan to use it, I would leave it on. It takes a lot more energy to heat the water than it does to maintain a constant temperature. Plus, it can take up to 8 hours or more (depending on weather and the power-rating of your heater) to heat the water so you'd have to decide well in advance when you plan to use it. But most importantly, just leaving the water sitting there is going to create a cesspool of bacteria. And even if you later drained it, you would still have it in the plumbing and would go right into the water the next time you filled it up. If you don't really plan to use it, I would cut the power, drain it, wipe it down, and then keep the lid fully closed. That way it will be ready if you ever do decide to use it.

Hi, Firstly great channel and the first one on RU-vid that is easy to understand and makes me feel like I have a chance to maintain my Hot Tub. A quick question.. I've watched all of your videos as I have an issue with my Hot Tub. I purchased a Mpsa Tuscany hot tub which is not really an inflatable but also not a completely rigid hot tub. When I purchased it (new) I was told by the dealer that all I had to do was thrown in two bromine tablets when I first fill it up and then each week just add a single tablet. Well... A week later the hot tub is slimey, the water is green and honestly I would not get in it! I am currently emptying out all of the water. What I have now is a tub full of Bromine tablets and test strips. I don't have any shock and am unsure what to do... From what I understand I need to clean the tub, fill with fresh water add bromine and then shock.. I don't have any shock so am unsure if I should wait until I buy some before starting the process. I'm pretty sure if I do the same thing again in a weeks time it's going to be the same situation... Any help appreciated.
@xYoungDeezYx
@xYoungDeezYx 3 года назад
there is so much more than just adding bromine tablets. get yourself some test strips and see what the alkalinity and pH levels are. if its too acidic or too alkaline your bromine tablets are not going to work. also you need sanitizer and shock chemicals as well. sounds like you need a new dealer!
@HotTubOwnerHQ
@HotTubOwnerHQ 3 года назад
Hi Miss Poshosho. As Drexl mentioned, unfortunately, they didn't give you enough info. 2 bromine tablets per week in a floater is a good start. But you also want to check alkalinity and pH about once a week and adjust as needed. Then every 7-10 days (depending on how often you use it), you'll want to add shock to reactivate the old sanitizer. You may want to go back and watch some of my other videos, but start with this one - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-emUq8jSIzfU.html

At 8:25, the message is incorrect. If you bring PH up, you are raising alkalinity, not acidity. I know you meant that one must raise the level of the acid to balance excessive alkalinity, but you said PH. As PH rises, so does the alkalinity, the very thing we have agreed is already too high.

Hi Doctor! Yes, just leave it on unless you'll be gone on vacation more than a month. It's much more expensive to constantly reheat than it is to just hold it at a set temp. Plus it will be ready for you instantly every time instead of having to wait for it to heat up (heats 3-6 degrees per hour).

@HotTubOwnerHQ
@HotTubOwnerHQ 4 года назад
Hi Kathryn Great question as ultimately, they do interact with one another. I always start with alkalinity and then pH (the pH will never get correct if the alkalinity is off). That's tricky as they do affect either other. Then I do sanitizer after that. I'm getting ready to try (and do a video on) another similar product to the Basque (Spa Marvel) so I can see for myself how it works, but I haven't tried it yet. But look for that video in about a month (I want to give it a few weeks before making the video so I can report how it works).

I’m a first time owner, well will be as soon as Master spa delivers it. I purchased a Taylor k-2006 testing kit. It checks free chlorine and total chlorine. Which chlorine do we test for the hot tub? Chlorine, PH, Alkalinity, and Calcium Hardness are the main items we test? Thanks and I enjoy your vids.
@HotTubOwnerHQ
@HotTubOwnerHQ 3 года назад
Great question. Free chlorine is basically what the chlorine is shortly after you add it to the water when it combines with the water. Total chlorine is what happens to it after it starts attacking the contaminants in the water. I only use test strips, and have never found a test kit necessary, but I would think if you're checking the water after a few days of the last adjustments, you probably want to be looking at the total chlorine. If the levels of total and free are different from one another, that means you have some chloramines present (what total chlorine turns into after absorbing contaminants), and shocking the hot tub is in order to get rid of those (which are not good). But yes, chlorine, pH, alkalinity, and hardness are the primary things to check for. Glad you like the videos!

Jeff, I have well water with 60ish grains of hardness. I have a soft water piped to one of my faucets outside for washing my car. I also use this to for about 40% of the water in my hot tub. I am getting some white residue (looks like salt) on my control panel screen. Reminds me of white residue from softened water inside. This residue concerns me that I am using too much softened water and that it will corrode my HT parts. Do you have any thoughts on what people with well water should use (or do) when filling up their HT? Will Defender work on super hard well water?

We just got our first hot tub and I have a question for you, our floater keeps getting sucked into where the filter is. Is that ok or should we keep it out of there? And I’m having a hard time keeping my free chlorine up should I just add more shock? I use bromine tablets and chlorine free shock. Thank you so much for your videos
@HotTubOwnerHQ
@HotTubOwnerHQ 4 года назад
I don't see an issue with the floater being in the filter area unless it seems like it's preventing the water flow through the filter. The door to my filter area isn't large enough for my floater, so you could also look at getting a larger floater and then just taking it out temporarily when you soak. If the chlorine drop is a recent issue, you may have biofilm buildup which tends to increase the need to add sanitizer and shock. But overall, I have always had the best luck with bromine sanitizer and chlorine shock rather than non-chlorine shock. If you want to learn more about biofilm and how to get rid of it, I do have a video on that - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8VxcrdIHtQo.html

You should change the water when switching your sanitizer from bromine to chlorine or vice versa. So if you're not in a hurry, waiting until the next official water change time is a great idea!

It's not necessary but if your changing your water every 3 or 4 months then it shouldn't be a big deal. It just wait til you use up your old chems, wait a week for the levels in the water to drop them throw in the new stuff.

After speaking with the Clorox people, I'm told chlorine is gas. They use salt to capture the gas. Upon encountering Heat, the gas is released from the salt. The chlorine passes through the water, disinfecting, until it rejoins the atmosphere. The hot tub is left with salt, so basically both systems are bromine

So dont use chlorine and bromine at the same time?
@HotTubOwnerHQ
@HotTubOwnerHQ 3 года назад
Hi Zachary. I do use bromine sanitizer (tablets in a floater) and chlorine shock. I would not, however, switch back and forth between chlorine and bromine sanitizer. If you do want to switch from one to the other, either do it the next time you drain it, or let it go several days from the last time you added anything, and then switch.

Chlorine is a gas bound to salt. Once heat touches chlorine, the gas rejoins the atmosphere, disinfecting our water as it goes. Bromine and chlorine wind up to be the same thing in a hot tub

Aside paying so much for a spa, the ongoing running cost + electricity make me not want one!
@HotTubOwnerHQ

Well it depends on how much you enjoy soaking and how often you'll use it. For me it's well worth it, and for a hard-wired hot tub, you're not likely to spend more than $20-30/month on electricity.

OMG...this is so confusing...I am 6 minutes in and all you are talking about is WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO TALK ABOUT OR 'LINK TO' in the comments. Why can't you just get to it??

Hi Sharky. Sorry you feel that way. I did definitely spend too much time in my earlier videos introducing myself, etc and I don't do that in any of my more recent videos (and have actually edited that out of many of my older ones). As for the links, I just mention that I'm putting links in the description if I'm demonstrating something. That way if someone wants to check it out, it's easy to do. And yes, Amazon pays me a 3-4% commission if someone buys something from my link. But I put a lot of time and effort into my videos and I don't see anything wrong with that. But I am sorry you feel annoyed by that.

Seems like a nice guy but super annoying how instead of providing ANY useful information whatsoever in the first 8 mins of watching he's just advertising all his links below. Just give us the name of the dang product, don't make me click a freaking amazon link for it Dude this is the 21st century, if you can't get all the important stuff out in 10 mins or less, then we'll just move on to the other guy who can spit it out faster.

@@HotTubOwnerHQ all good. Just I watched 5 mins of it and it was just introducing all the videos and products linked without showing anything useful until after the 5 min mark. That's just too long for a payoff, but all good, your presentation is clear and you seem like a nice enough guy
