Nice, for a couple of years Mille Lacs has been tough fishing for keepers, hopefully this is a sign of things to come.

Absolutely discouraging ice fishing season! I've held off from getting started ice fishing for years because it is so expensive to get all the gear needed to give you any shot at catching fish and because I have terrible problems with both hands, but I finally decided I wanted to give it a shot. I've watched nearly every ice fishing video on InDepthOutdoorTV and some other channels to try to become a better fisherman. To learn what to use for lures and bates, learning to utilize barometric pressure drops, looking for tips on depths and best positions in the lakes for gills, crappie, perch, and walleye. I did lose a monster walleye(my only walleye), at the beginning of ice season on Ely Lake in Eveleth, right at the hole after fighting for 10 minutes to get him up a hole that was apparently too small and since then I've been out a dozen or more times to be absolutely BLANKED on fish! We've drilled holes on a couple lakes until we can't use our hands and now I'm thinking about selling all me gear and quitting! We've worked far to hard for this to even be enjoyable for me, at this point, and that really really sucks! I'm starting to think that watching others catch fish is far less physically painful for this guy. Truly disheartening. I love your videos though and wishing I could better utilize the information you are giving.

Hang in there lrfixit. Everyone gets in a bad rut now and then, including the crew here at IDO. The trick is to stay positive and fish right through it. You're in a great area up there in Ely but I've heard the bites been tough so you're not the only one having a tough go of it.

***** Thanks James, it is a lot about attitude, I agree. We went out Saturday for nearly 12 hours. I caught 1 tiny perch but thankfully the other guys all got crappie from a nice 30' deep plateau. Really hoping this spot and a couple others are going to yield some nice counts in weeks to come. I have to work on presentation more, I think.

@InDepthOutdoorsTV
@InDepthOutdoorsTV 9 лет назад
Bob kachmarzinski If memory serves it was changed 2, maybe 3, years back. The way James and Will fish those trebles as part of a quick strike rig allows the angler to set the hook as soon as the fish grabs the bait which results in very, very few deeply hooked fish and a very good hooking percentage. Best of both worlds in my book.

I am jealous. I have no ice by me. We had 2 inches a month ago and it went away before I could get out. I got a new ice suit and I'm icing to try it out.

I went to Mille Lacs around the same time as this video and did AWFUL! We fished hard on the south end of the lake and could not locate walleye. However, this video has encouraged me to take another trip to the NE portion of the lake and try to redeem myself. Do you have any additional information about how to locate the specific depths and structures needed to catch fish? Maybe even the access the guys used that day? Thanks! InDepthOutdoorsTV

Will there ever be any ice fishing videos done is the eastern part of the country?
@InDepthOutdoorsTV
@InDepthOutdoorsTV 9 лет назад
How far east you talking? I know James and the guys talk about going out to Erie, the UP and Saginaw Bay all the time. The conditions need to come together for that to happen though. Now if you're talking Maine, that would be tough to do. With the guys filming shows and airing them in the same week the drive time alone would be very problematic.
@Leatherwoodoutdoors
@Leatherwoodoutdoors 9 лет назад
InDepthOutdoorsTV Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio. I understand further east and north would be difficult with drive times. Erie would be good. Even though it might not be out of Pa or Ny, it would still be nice to see a lake fished that at least borders these states. Lots of anglers out east here would enjoy seeing a lake fished closer to home. Thanks for your reply. Keep up the great shows!

I believe RU-vid is still processing the higher resolution versions of the video. 1080 will be available once the video is fully processed. Or at least that's my best guess right now as this video was uploaded using the same file and format we always use.

what rods do you guys use looks like 32 med but what brand and reels
@InDepthOutdoorsTV
@InDepthOutdoorsTV 9 лет назад
I believe both James and Will were using 36" Precision rods from Tuned Up Customs. The reels were Shimanos. Sedonas and Siennas I believer.
@powell3120
@powell3120 9 лет назад
InDepthOutdoorsTV I've watched every episode on your channel multiple times... James pretty much always has a Sedona on the rod, with the exception of baitcasters and such. When is Shimano going to show IDO some love?! I have a Sierra and love it... but I won't push them if they won't do it themselves!

Why do people get butthurt about not being able to keep smallmouth? If you can catch smallmouth you can catch perch, crappie, or gills, all of which are easier to catch, better to eat, and don't hurt the lake as much if kept.
@bighurts1
@bighurts1 9 лет назад
You can keep smallies out there. Six fish with one over 18". The MN DNR's response to the walleye down turn was liberalizing the northern and smallmouth regs, to my dismay.

Yeah, just plain stupid. They opened up spearing this winter too and 30+ inch fish are leaving the lake like crazy.
