• Hotel National Bern. B... Original elevator before modernization in 2012. This elevator was built by Schindler and later modernized by EMCH Bern. Hotel National AG Hirschengraben 24 3011 Bern Switzerland
Such a horrible modernization... There's a huge loss of efficiency. Now the elevator travels slower than it did before and now it also takes forever to start. Also the door-locks are very slow and sound very annoying... Typical modernization, making a good elevator worse :( And what's the point of the metal bars above the doors where there before was free space? Ah, i guess: to make sure people STAY TRAPPED whenever the elevator gets stuck, which i'm sure will happen much more often after this disgraceful CHEAP modernization... Yup, people can't take their own decissions... It's better to let them die in case of fire than hurting themselv from jumping two meters down to the floor. I totally hate that sort of disgusting safety mentality and the "protect-you-from-yourself" idea. Equipping such a beautiful elevator with nothing less than Schaefer BUDGETLINE fixtures.... OH MY GOD i'm speechless! Of all the fixture designs in the world they picked one of the cheapest and dullest of them all... not that the previous Schaefer 28 style buttons were much better... but anyways, this elevator deserves better. That VF steering would also kill me. Its so frustrating to ride an elevator that has weak and slow acceleration. The movement now is so weak and dull and uninteresting. I'm utmost dissapointed... They killed off so much character from this elevator Modernization just can't do anything good. It should be avoided at any cost Anyways, you're doing a good job of filming elevators. This is not a critic of your video, but of the incompetent bureaucrats, lobbyists and greedy modern elevator companies that profits from vandalizing vintage historic elevators and mercilessly killing off their amazing character and outstanding perfomance... not only that. they're also slowly but surely erasing the memories of an awesome historic and GLORIOUS era of industry, design and craftmansship! I mourn at every historic elevator that is ripped out or cheaply modernized like this one.
Yes, unfortunately the elevator was too modernized! I pester me every time to give the modernized! But just bureaucracy and politics are just sucks! Everything has to be safe even for the biggest idiots because the people really do not take more personal responsibility!
+Heritage Elevators Are you familiar with the current elavator regulations in Switzerland? What if the only alternative to this modernization would have been taking it out of oder forever? I remenber I heard something like this about this elevator. I know this Hotel for many years and I am very thankful that this unique heritage elevator is still in order theese days. Despyte the bureaucrazy.
It is a winding drum elevator, I knew when I saw the two hoist ropes anchored to the elevator cab. It often depended on the installation, most winding drums had a counterweight a pair of hoist ropes splayed off the backside of the drum back up the shaft over guide shaves to a counterweight. Non counterweight winding drums were not unheard of and/or some employed an independent weight anchored to the cab.
Unsafe due to the easy access of human members to the shaft and generates disturbing sounds while securing or unlocking the doors, it is still very retro and the combination of classic style and refurbishment makes it a real work of art.
