Awesome demo man. This is everything I needed to see about this pedal! I play ridiculous heavy stuff on an 8 string but I really felt the tweakability of this and you sold me on it. Also that metalzone tone was quite good, it's not a bad preamp at all!

Excellent review, Sean - thank you. I want to buy one of these. Would I put guitar into a drive pedal FIRST and then out to the Hotone and then out from Hotone to my VOX amp? Where would a BOSS GE7 eq pedal go? Thanks.
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 3 года назад
I'd recommend placing the GE-7 BEFORE the Hotone...but the problem is that the outputs on the Hotone have the speaker simulation on them and there's no THRU or DRY output. this will cause some phasing issues with the speaker in your VOX amp. If you still want to plug into your amp I recommend the NUX Solid Studio of the ENGL Cab Loader

Are there any of these cab simulator devices that you know of that would be good for clean Hollowbody jazz guitar sound? Running direct is not pleasant. Thanks
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 4 года назад
Hi Pebber, Most of the cab sim devices have cabs that would work well with clean guitar like Twins, Bassmen, Supers, heck even the Voxes if you're it it. I think the trick with jazz guitar is pairing it with a good preamp that can stay clean but still has some "vibe" and life to it. I don't know if you've checked out the Neunaber Neuron at all but I quite like it's clean tones. It's a digital preamp with a built in compressor and lots of extra features that make tone shaping really easy and quick. I do have a demo on the channel but there's quite a bit of distortion playing in it so it may not highlight it for your needs. But I like it and think it's worth a try. Having said that, there's a lot of great preamps on the market that you can use. You may want to check out Shift Line and their TWIN preamp. It has a tube inside and it does well as a clean platform. They have some videos out there so check those out. Hope all that was helpful! Thanks for tuning in

I am using a Boss GT-1 with the "MIld Jazz" patch direct through a Yamaha MG8X mixer into a Focusriyte Scarlett 2i2 into an IMac 27" i7 4.0ghz with 48GB ram and a 2TB Fusion drive. The GT1- and Yamaha mixer setup are "ok" but doesnt have. a lot of depth or naturalness to it. I was thinking a cab simulator would help so I ordered this Hotone after seeing your excellent video. Hi Sean, I don't know if you will see this, but I was wondering... My pedal chain ends with a Ditto Stereo (I run my whole pedalboard in mono) could I use one stereo output to go to the amp and the other to go into the CAB which then would go to an interface or a PA? Thanks to anyone who may answer to my question
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 4 года назад
Alejandro Rangel hey Alejandro, the set up you’re describing would probably work. Since you’re running mono into the Ditto the output will just essentially be “Dual Mono” since you’re not using anything like a stereo delay or reverb. I can’t 100% say with certainty it WILL work but the based on my research, it SHOULD work.

I have the Binary AMP, it's pretty decent. I run into a NU>X Solid Studio (cab em *off* on the AMP) and you can get some okay tones. I'd like to try it with this CAB or a Digitech CabDryVR. Struggling to get a satisfying DI tone. The NU>X on its own or the CAB with a preamp pedal may be my best option. I need a good DI box to balance my input/output, I think that may be part of the problem. My clean tone is almost inaudible then *bam* the gain kicks in. I really hate DI but at, there's no other way. The project I'm playing for isn't mine and he won't allow amps, becuase we're in the city.

Could this be used in front of say, a bog standard combo amp, i.e. treating it in effect as a stomp box just to get some tonal variations out of the amp?
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 5 лет назад
I wouldn’t recommend doing that. This isn’t a preamp/distortion pedal. This is meant to simulate the way a guitar speaker would sound. When you run them into non-FRFR (Full Range, Flat Response) speakers you’ll encounter unwanted phasing problems (at least in my experience. The tone feels and sounds quiet hollow if this is run into an amplifier. Sadly this one doesn’t have a THRU output so you can’t run the THRU to an amp and send the Main Output to the Front of House.

Do you -need- a preamp with this sort of thing? Just looking to use it for a quiet practice alternative using the aux in and headphones. I would be running my whole pedalboard into it and I have a Timmy that is "always on".
@Micah_s
@Micah_s 4 года назад
Yes. You should get a preamp. The cab pedal is just the digital power amp section. Not the "pre-amp" section. The Timmy is not really a preamp. The difference between a preamp and a drive pedal is that when a drive pedal's gain is turned up, the circuit inside dirties up as well. With a preamp, when the gain is turned up on that, it is driving your amp, or whatever you are plugged into, but the circuit stays clean. And preamps usually have a three-band EQ. So I would get a preamp. I recommend the preamps from Mooer. They have some good options.

Can I put that Hotone in the end of the effect's chain after tuner, wah, distortion and then put it to the amp?
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 4 года назад
NO...the Binary does not have a THRU output of DRY output. You'll be sending a speaker simulated signal into your amp and playing it back through guitar speakers. This could potential cause phasing issues which make it difficult to record and to have your tone cut through a full mix. This is purely a direct recording/playing solution. No amp needed.

I got one but the output level drops tremendously and all of the differentcas sound as if I have a blanket over them, muffled. When bypassing the pedal everything is back loud and bright. Maybe a got a lemon... great video though!!
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 2 года назад
Hey Ivan! First off, thanks so much for watching. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Let's see if we can dissect the problem here. One question: are you using the Binary CAB to go direct ONLY or are you running it into an amp as well? You aren't the first person to express that the Binary sounds "muffled". If you're running it into an amp, you're most likely hearing a phase cancellation between the speakers in your amp and the speaker sims in the Binary CAB. Phase cancellation can indeed lead to a perceived drop in volume. It can also make things sound muffled.
@ivanphoto44
@ivanphoto44 2 года назад
@@SeanPierceJohnson Now that sounds pretty much like what the situation is. Thanks so much. So essentially (and for simple testing purposes), I plug my guitar into the Binary AMP, then out into the the Binary CAB and into one of my mixer channels. The headphone out of the mixer goes into a Synthtrom Deluge where I do all kinds of fun loopy things. On the Binary AMP, I do turn off the Cab on the top right button so I can use the Binary CAB as my only cab sim. If I bypass the Bin CAB, I get a loud, clear, and crisp (and ugly) sound from the AMP with a cab, then when I engage the Binary AMP, that drops in half, with very little high end info, just all quiet, bassy and muffled). Oh and I am hearing everything on headphones. Trying to find out where the phase cancellation may be taking place. Thanks a million!
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 2 года назад
The phase cancellation would only be happening if you were running ANY of the speaker simulation into a guitar amp/speaker cab. But since tryout setup is entirely DI, I’m guessing that’s not happening. I’m not familiar with your looper but I’m wondering if using the headphone out to feed the looper is POSSIBLY and issue. The reason I say this is because you’re running guitar into a looper but then how are you hearing playback? Is it all through headphones out of the looper? I think first you need to isolate you guitar sound and make sure that’s working. Basically: just hook up the Binary AMP & CAB together, turn OFF the Binary AMP speaker simulator, use the Binary CAB for all speaker sim and monitor THAT through headphones directly. Don’t use the mixer. Keep me posted. WE’RE GONNA FIGURE THIS OUT OR FIND YOU SOMETHING THAT WORKS!
@ivanphoto44
@ivanphoto44 2 года назад
@@SeanPierceJohnson Hey Sean! So the looper (its a synth, sampler, sequencer but I use it for the looping) out goes into a compressor, then goes into a headphone amp and I listen back on headphones, all in stereo. I did do the test you suggested but I will do it again today to make sure I didn't miss anything and will keep you posted. If I remember correctly, the problem was identical. Will let you know soon! Thanks:)
@ivanphoto44
@ivanphoto44 2 года назад
@@SeanPierceJohnson Ok so I just did the test again and the problem is pretty much the same. Interestingly enough, I tried the headphone out for the headphones and also the standard out with the same headphones and noticed that the levels weren't any different (I thought headphones out would be louder...). The regular out also threw the signal to one side only but that was to be expected using a stereo headphone....
