This is the Solid Studio I.R. & Power Amp Simulator pedal from Nu-X Effects (or NUX if you prefer). The Solid Studio is a guitar speaker simulator in a pedal. It has Eight speaker cabinet emulations, Eight microphone emulations and can emulate the response of Three different power amp tubes: EL34, 6v6 and EL84.
The Solid Studio is perfect for direct guitar recording, songwriting, or for use on a pedalboard where putting a microphone on a speaker cabinet isn't possible. In this demo and review, we'll take a look at the tones produced and see how quickly YOU can dial in your own speaker simulation sound.

@@mariobrala6850 hey Mario. I can't confidently say that the NUX would be a good headphone amp, as I've not used it for that purpose. The Output does indicate it can be used with Headphones via a TRS cable. So you COULD use headphones but I can't say whether or not it will work well with headphones as I haven't tried it. Hope that helps.

Thank you Sean for a practical and thorough review of certain (for me, the most important) aspects of the pedal. I hope your viewers have an idea of what it means (time, patience, energy ...) to crawl with (eg just one) microphone in front of the speaker in search of the "desired" sound and how much only mic-simulation speeds up the recording (for us bedroom musicians, anyway). Or simply speed up the time to enjoy the guitar/jamming...

Thanks for this thorough review. I have a Two Notes Torpedo CAB for a while now. It's a great tool tool to make minute changes to mics and cabs, but sometimes I just want something where I can quickly change a parameter with a quick knob turn. I think this might be the pedal for that.

I've recently been running a Vox Valve Energy Silk Drive set to "pre" dialed clean paired with a NU-X Lacerate Fet Boost to liven up amp sims, but I bet this Solid Studio pedal would make that Vox preamp shine on it's own. Nice demo.

Thanks man. Yeah the Solid Studio is great! I think the BIG thing that helps set it apart is the Power Amp stage. It’s just completely different than most other speaker sims and lend a real lifelines to everything.

Hi Sean, GREAT Video! I sure wish someone would make a RU-vid Video showing how the NUX Solid Studio sounds using a clean signal instead of a distorted one like you used. IMHO, a clean, uncolored signal is the best way to judge how ANY Power Amp & IR Simulator truly sounds.
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 2 года назад
Hey J.B. Thanks for checking out the video. I certainly understand where you're coming from. However, in my experience it's best to make the sound change as drastic as possible so that leads me to use distortion pedals to test cab sims. Without that speaker sim or IR it's pretty obvious how bad the distortion makes a guitar signal sound. Clean tone changes are less obvious, still easy to hear, but don't demonstrate the change as drastically IMO. I can definitely tell you that the Solid Studio works great regardless of clean or dirty sounds. It's still one of my favorites.

@@SeanPierceJohnson If you were given, with the understanding that you had to keep it, had to use it, and you couldn't sell it to buy something else you'd rather have, would you choose a NUX Amp Academy, a NUX Solid Studio, or a Strymon Iridium? Once you choose, please tell me why :)

Thanks for this excellent review, best for this unit in YT Now my only question. Do the power amp simulations add some reverb flavor to the tone? I heard some from the beginning and I don't think it came from your preamp. You demonstrated very well the added drive and presence control knobs, but I have read consistent reports in forums and YT of embedded reverb effect on the amp simulation block. Thanks
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 5 лет назад
Hey man! First off, thanks so much for watching and your kind words. Really means a lot! To your question: yeah there is a bit there. BUT I wouldn't call it reverb, instead I look at it as "Room ambiance". The simulations have a distant mic as well as a direct mic on the cabs. But it's not HEAVY just a touch to give a sense of space and realness to the sound. And in all honesty, it doesn't distract from the core purpose/tone of the pedal. Sometimes, you'll forget it's there...I do. Hope I was able to answer your question well. Cheers!
@ErGoyoTV
@ErGoyoTV 5 лет назад
@@SeanPierceJohnson I see, so it obviously has ambience is in the cabs+mic IR, but none additional coming from the Powet Amp Sym modeling algorithm. Thanks again, for me I can take all that for Fender twin reverb type amps. Great videos, nice work, will subscribe and comment.

Is your preamp for doubling with the built-in preamp, or it doesnt have a preamp for signal leveling built-in at all? Thank you for the content!
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson 2 года назад
hey Rafael. the Solid Studio doesn't have a preamp persay...it's more a power amp simulator. it does act as a gain stage but it's not a replacement for an amp sim. so the preamp I'm using it really as my main amp tones. not to say you couldn't use the Power Amp sim in that way...but its not a regular thing i do.

Hi guy! Should this Solid Studio, along with the PreAmp pedal, be placed at the end of the signal chain after the modulations, before the modulations or should the modulations be between them? Thanks!
@SeanPierceJohnson
@SeanPierceJohnson Год назад
Hey Alexandre! Thanks for watching. To answer your questions: I place the SS at the END of the signal chain. I do this for two reasons; 1) the SS has an XLR/DI Output on the side of the enclosure. It’s an easy way to go direct without needing a separate DI box. And 2) based on the logic that you’re hearing ALL your guitar effects through a speaker of some kind (including time based and modulation) it makes sense to place it at the end. It would still work if you didn’t, but you’d need more inputs/another DI box to go to front of house or your DAW. Hope this helps!

Worth noting that the Solid State needs 9v at 500mA, which means some power supply bricks won't have enough juice. I should fess up. MY power supply had only 300mA. The results were... interesting. The pedal is a beast, but how accurate the sims are is beyond me. But it sounds good, and that's all that matters, eh? But if you really want to hear what it sounds like when digital elves dissolve all your amps, mics and cabs with their toxic bits then try 300mA.

Does the XLR carry the affected signal from the pedal as a whole or is it an unaffected guitar signal DI?

The DI Output sends the Speaker Sim & Power Amp Sim...not a true direct guitar sound. It simply eliminates the need to use a separate DI box to send to FOH.
