WE MADE IT TO YOKOSUKA!! Sorry to leave anyone hanging for house tours. In today's video, I thought it would be really beneficial to explain how to find a rental place in Japan as a foreigner. There are cultural nuances that differentiate the process from my previous experiences in the states. Other topics I hope prepare you are renting with a dog or a cat (pet-friendly rentals), discuss foreigner discrimination in the housing market, and… of course, share some hope! We are so excited to move to this area, and I hope you enjoy touring 2 out of the 5 houses we looked at. Stay tuned for the next video where we look a the rest of the 3 homes!

I don't know in Japan but the outdoor shutters here in Europe are also used to keep the sun out in the summer and does wonders with keeping the house cool!

This could not have come at a better time! I have been accepted for work in Japan, and I have been doing lots of research since last week, trying to look for a house in Sapporo. This is a good starting point. Now I have to look for any of your videos that have how-to bring your dog to Japan. Arigatou gozaimasu!

Japan has extremely strict quarantine measures, especially if coming from a country that isn't rabies-free (as Japan is). It's definitely something to be organising/looking into immediately! Most say to start the process 6 months before moving.

If you plan on bringing your pet and don't want them quarantined for long, (basically less headache & money) then you should've started the process months ago. We brought 2 cats and a dog.

So true! 3:00 it is definitely true. When I moved to Fukuoka I shortlisted 3 properties near the subway say about a 2 min walk from the subway. Before moving we were told those properties were no longer available because we did not speak Japanese.

Looking forward to the next episode! So far second home has more potential to me, even that some appliances or cupboards may look outdated (you say the price is way lower, that's attractive!). It has nice layout, not that much of a long corridor, interesting what would be another options :) Renting as a foreigner is always difficult, I moved from Poland to Germany and this is totally different experience (a lot of bureaucracy, most of the flats are with no furniture, good that there are at least bathrooms and wooden/titled floors :D) That was a cultural shock to me. In the end we found a really nice flat which I hope we will stay at for longer before moving to something we will buy in the future :) Good luck Atlas family! :)

I laighed at the "very small" bedroom in the first house. It must be either the camera not showing it how it was or a cultural difference, because it looked perfectly normal-sized to me, haha. I'm lookign forward for more house tours! Also, an Instagrammer from my country has been recently house-hunting in Australia, and I loved that content. Seeing how yours video made me excited I might have found a new favorite genre 😂

The views were amazing on that first house, but I think the one parking spot and the shared walls would be a big con. That second one with the Japanese garden and tatami room I thought was a great family home. Half the budget too?! Can easily upgrade the window treatments and make it more modern.

In Canada, we don't have the monthly rent beforehand to pay, but the rent for what you showed for a house, is actually the price of a small appartement. So it's not perfect anywhere I guess!

Hi from Australia. I have never rented here but in your vlog and one or 2 others I have watched about house hunting in Japan there is never a mention of references from other estate agents. From my perspective wouldn't positive past references greatly reduce fears of accepting foreigners as tenants ? Here I think the estate agents have a online bad tenants register. Given the over the top upfront costs I would ask why the renter is forced to purchase insurance, something I have not heard of before. I have not lived in Japan but if the landlord tried that in Australia there would be so many complaints I don't think it would see the light of day.
@heratlas
@heratlas 8 месяцев назад
Hey Richard! great convo points!! In the states, it's the same. You can ABSOLUTELY have your previous landlord as a reference for your new home, and it's always really beneficial to do so. In Japan, you can have a reference from your landlord, usually you can provide a telephone number if you want it to make you more competitive. the challenge is that as a foreigner living in Japan, and if it's your first place, a reference from a previous landlord is absolutely worthless. The reference won't hold any value since it could be a fake reference. This is another reason it can be a problem for foreigners trying to rent here. Another option you can have is a co-signer, but they have to be a resident or visa holder of some kind in Japan. This co-signer is responsible for anything you (a foreigner) may skip out on. The crazy thing to me about the co-sign is expecting someone new to the country to know anyone who would be willing to sponsor them and sign legally binding paperwork!!??

This rent is considered super expensive in India. Your conversion for India is 116000 and the price here in India is on an average 40000 per month for a 3LDK

I know delusion is strong in white America but this is next level. You can’t really believe Vietnamese, Mexican, Pakistani, Kenyan, Egyptian, etc, etc people arrive in the USA and don’t face discrimination when trying to find a place to live. My family couch surfed for over a year. Sure my non English speaking parents should have just sued, so easy huh? It wasn’t even a case of pay more it was a case of we don’t want to rent to people like you at any price.

Different histories- Japan wasn't a slave society and didn't pass such anti-discrimination laws in response to centuries of oppression.
