One appreciates the quiet and solemn dignity of a beloved ceremony that is a centuries-old tradition in the world's oldest parliament. One also appreciates that nothing says "quiet and solemn dignity" quite like "put on a cape and bow three times to the Quaker Oats guy."
Why such a shortage of old parliamentary footage out there? The Lords have been regularly televised from the 80's, I think - have most of the tapes been wiped? @coljax Parliament
The Lords has been televised since January 1985, all the tapes of the proceedings are in the Parliamentary broadcasting archives - very little is available online.
