Thanks for watching everyone, let me know in the comments below how you feel about this combination and also leave a comment below if you have any personal favorite sets. I wanted to provide all the measurements of piece weight and height as I did in the video about the library grandmaster set, but I figured I wont bore everyone with information that perhaps only some would be interested in. So with that being said, here are the measurements: Weight (Ounces/Grams): Dark Pieces: King: 4.4/126 Queen: 3.1/88 Knight: 3.0/85 Bishop: 2.7/79 Rook: 2.9/84 Pawn: 1.1/32 Light Pieces: King: 4.1/118 Queen: 3.4/98 Knight: 2.6/76 Bishop: 2.5/73 Rook: 3.1/90 Pawn: 1.1/33 Height (Inches/mm) King: 4.355/110.63 Queen: 3.464/88 Knight (Measured to the top of the maine): 2.72/69 Bishop: 3.147/79.74 Rook: 2.488/63.19 Pawn: 2.015/51.18 Base Diameter (Inches/mm) King: 1.966/49.93 Queen: 1.812/46.03 Knight: 1.638/41.58 Bishop: 1.550/39.36 Rook: 1.674/42.52 Pawn: 1.307/33.20 If this is of any use to anyone, especially for picking a proper board, then leave a like and subscribe. Thanks for watching.
The bishops are gorgeous - a massive improvement over designs which feature a simple slit representing the mitre. Not sure about the toffee coloured "white" pieces.
These is a very nice set. I would probably recommend if the version you are looking is out of stock, see if you can contact HOS and find out when it will be back in stock, sometimes they can let you know how soon to expect it.
What's going on my good chess friends! Found a moment to sit down and catch up on all the great comments you guys leave! These comments, people watching is what it's all about, if it wasn't for social media, I don't think I would be surrounded by so many great people such as yourself with similar interest to mine, out to build a true chess community. If you happen to come across this comment, I wanted to update you guys as to the recent changes I see happening with RU-vid. If you have started to see ads run prior to my videos, it means that RU-vid started to run ads for my channel, however, not until I hit the 1000 subscriber mark and 4000 hours of viewing time, can I monetize. Some of the more elegant and cooler chess set I so much wish to show you are outside of my budget so my intention is when I finally hit those numbers and youtube starts to pay me for the ads, then I can use those funds to get better chess sets, and show you guys so much more, find time to travel and even perhaps go to some chess events. Before I hit those marks though, you will see ads on my channel but the funding from ads is going to RU-vid only, which is fine, they need to be able to justify the HUGE amount of space that they have to make for all of my videos. With that being said, lets all make an effort to get subscribing and watching so we can get to the point where the ads you guys have to skip would translate to pennies for newer and better chess merchandise instead of just going only to RU-vid! If you like this channel, share it with your friends if they also enjoy chess, if they don't enjoy chess don't share otherwise I'll be swarmed with dislikes lol. Have a wonderful day everyone! Stay safe and enjoy being in the moment! P.S. I'll drop this same comment in some of my other chess videos so more people have a chance to see it! Cheers!!
With such a beautiful collection set it would be inappropriate to talk about felt. But I agree with you, Alex! All chess sets should be equipped with felt like the 1852 Paulsen set. You think Christmas 2020 was very generous to you. :) We all enjoy your review here. Thank You.
Thanks a lot! You are right, I agree with you, but felt is still important consideration with every set. Actually will want to reconsolidated my collection, maybe sell a couple of sets, will need room to buy new sets, wonder where's a good place to sell if any.
@@AlSuChess Correct! Feeling is actually the most important choice and purchase. I would do the same. Alex, you know - most people use eBay for private sales. You can organize this sale and make it interesting by leaving the chess sets up for auction. Good or less good prices can be obtained. You definitely don't have to sell at any price.
Thank you! I feel like getting a set you like is subjective, it's not really about the price, it's all about finding the right color combination! Hope you find what you are looking for!
I'm trying to sculpt my own pieces and I want to be inspired by your videos. Could you do a video comparing and showing the details of various knights?
I love your review. Especially I find the boards really interesting. There is a similar board like this at house of staunton. One being from Italy and the other from Spain. Have you thought about doing more board reviews? Where you review boards from Chess Bazaar too! Your reviews are the best online. Thanks!
That's great to hear! I definitely will be doing more reviews and if money wasn't an issue I already have my eye on several very attractive board and chess set options that I'd be pretty excited to review. I haven't looked much at chess bazaar but I know they have good deals too! Thanks for watching!
I think you could just return the set afterwards? You give an honest price/value, much appreciated. Also your camera really pops the picture off my screen. Thanks!
@@AlSuChess they do and said they expect to have many back in April. But try Chess Bazaar for now? They seem to make good boards in terms of quality but I'm a little hesitant of their staunton pieces because all the rook have angled crowns that no one else notices, disproportionate queen crowns. Lots to review still, you are the best for us chess piece nerds
Beautifull set...i loved the diffetence in height between the king and queen... looks fabulous elegant on the board.. the way the pieces' base kind like melt before touching the squares, beautifull base shape and the way they connect with the board, planted, secure.. and ofcourse the "box" the suitecase. but almost always I have this issue witj the "horses" (cause there are no actual knitghs) wiçh is their eyes, like if thet were in the brink of death or lkie8they have seen a ghostbut this set it is not so bad... enjoy it... luxory chess set. Excelent choise Pleasent review thx!
@@AlSuChess for me it ts.. with no eyes and less details.. i mean, dont you belive that the horses are the only one piece different from the rest? Like they dont belong? No other piece have details, no king with a robe or beard or any queen with a dress 9r any hair style... just a hint, a reminder, a ltlle crown, a shape of a mitral hat (bishop) etc.. many times the horses are way reallistic.. thats why i kind of like a lot the set of the championship match of 2013.. well thx 4 the replie. Greetings
@@AlSuChess yeah you’re giving me big time chess envy. I have the Grandmaster II set from HOS and before I bought it I couldn’t find much documentation about chess sets on RU-vid strangely enough- so I’m glad your channel is here (and such good quality it’s fantastic). Anyway you’re fueling my chess addiction and I have this exact set bookmarked on my HOS wish list 😎
Please review the official FIDE world chess championship set, amazing video. Thanks, whats your opinion? should i get that one or maybe this 1852 Paulsen
Thanks for watching, I think this is a very nice set also. As far as the pricing goes, HOS sells this for $295 for less expensive wood varieties and this one was about $695. I think around Christmas they had this set as one of their deals so I was able to get this set for a little bit less. That board is 2.5 inch squares so the footprint is 23.75 inches x 23.75 inches, and you can get it around $399, I lucked out and got mine used for around $200, but it had some minor scuff on two of the edges. Hope this helps!
For situations where you would promote pawn to queen with a queen still being on the board. My good friend from Europe also asked me why the Cambridge Spring Set I sent him had 4 queens, as I know it is customary to just flip the rook upside down to indicate a second queen! Thanks for watching!
"Emil Kemacny 1892-93 Reproduction Staunton Chess Set". Can you give me a review for this set? I see many sets have same shape and style with the others. What is a difference between them?
For sure, if I get my hands on that set, I'll be sure to make a review video! And yeah I agree, quite a bit of similarity between sets, it's also because familiarity is preferred sometimes to avoid confusion. Thank you for watching!
@@AlSuChess I'm really exciting with this antique preproduction set series haha, Emil Kemacny, Jaques set or Walter Grimshall 1854 which you've just uploaded on your channel, the Horse pieces seem similar between these concepts, It's so cool.
The large board in this video it the Elm Burl Birds Eye Maple Superior Traditional Chess Board, 2.5 inch square size, from House of Staunton, to this day, it's one of my favorite boards!
Depending on the wood, the price of the set can vary between $350 for ebonized boxwood all the way up to $550 roughly for genuine ebony! I bought mine with the case and I think it set me back approximately $700 and change!
I now have an addiction. I am thinking about buying these but they are pretty similar to my morphy pieces. How do you rank these with your Turin and Modena pieces?
