the only problem I can’t get over: Otto isn’t a dumbass, so of course Daemon is gonna have the dragon option on his hip; the only reason he might have wanted Rhaenyra to show up is to get both rivals to off each other, but really unnecessarily risky scheme with little guarantee
Daemon is pure chaotic energy. Stole an egg for a child he doesn't have, invited people to a wedding he isn't having all to get his brother's attention... 🤣🤣🤣🤣
my father had been working as a waiter in Germany for a number of years when the Kosovo conflict began in 1998. His brother was a soldier who had fought for Kosovo's independence and said he was being held hostage by Serbian soldiers in Montenegro. My father spared no expense and effort and quickly went to Montenegro, where he imagined the worst scenarios of what they would probably do to his brother. when he got down to the address his brother gave. he arrived at a hotel. he went towards the pool when he saw his brother with a cigar in his mouth and a big smile . He said to my father he felt terribly lonely and missed my father because he hadn't seen him for 6 years😂😂
Viserys marrying Allicent hurts Rhaenyra is many angles She accepted her father marrying for duty, but choosing Allicent over Laenna means he is choosing based on feelings, not duty This means he is over her mother With her best friend Which means both him and her were hiding it from her all this time
To be fair I don't think he's 'over' Aemma....he clearly loved her and he told Rhaenyra he could never replace her and it was obvious he didn't *want* to remarry (especially so soon) but the kingdom expects it. Alicent seems more like a case of 'well if I HAVE to remarry to get the council to shut up, I'll at least pick someone who seems to genuinely like *me*, not just because I'm king. The real error was not talking to Rhaenyra about it first (marrying Alicent in particular, not just getting remarried period ).
@@nares2005 yeah I’m not sure why you think he is a coward, he is definitely indecisive but I think he was surprised when his daughter was upset, they spoke and she seemed content that he had to remarry. She is upset because she was not told ahead of time.
@@corvus2512 boy he knew she did not was thinking it would be her best friend, obv bcs there were a better candidate, so? Why would i not tell my doughter i am going to marry her best friend, knowing it would upset her. Bcs he is a coward, he does not know how to talk to her
I'm surprised that people are surprised that Viserys didn't speak with Rhaenyra about Allicent. Daemon said it before, Viserys is weak. He can't handle confrontation. He didn't speak to his wife about the c section and now he didn't speak to Rhaenyra. I believe what Daemon said about wanting to protect Viserys because of that weakness. On another note, we know that the iron throne cutting kings is an omen that they are not worthy to rule, but I personally take it that it also means Viserys is making the wrong decisions. As when he decided to cast his brother away, the throne cut him once more.
The scene with the maggots was my favorite. In that scene we see that King Visyres wound on his hand has only gotten worse and its the wound he got when he sent his brother away, the wound, like their relationship has festered. Also the symbolism there, the King's hand is rotten. It could be physical and a reflection of Otto Hightower, who pretty skillfully manipulates the king into marriage with his daughter.
Otto is playing the Game of Thrones and he is doing it quite well at the moment. I imagine he will be more of a "power behind the throne" type of player as opposed to actually wanting to become king, like how we saw Tywin when he was Hand of the King under Joffrey and Tommen.
@Darkstar yeah, indeed, Otto was a very astute and well read nobleman, very smart, and he failed his duties blinded by ambition, and failed to see the consequences of his "climb"/power play while enjoying how very smart he is
@Darkstar I don't really have anything witty to say at the moment, unfortunately lol. I will say that I already am aware of what happens to Otto Hightower in the future and while his fate was unsurprising in the least, its important to note that it is because of his actions that the Dance of Dragons begins and deals a serious blow House Targaryen and their power in Westeros.
Daemon feels like he just wants his brother's love and respect. The stealing of the egg was an attention seeking attempt. He seems likely an impudent child but his love for his family still remains.
It was a ploy to get Viserys to come to Dragonstone, away from Otto and the council so that he could speak to his brother alone, without their interference. The only person that Daemon will take orders from is his brother. He told Otto as much on the bridge. Daemon was not going to give him the egg under any circumstances. Daemon was steadily needling and provoking Otto to leave or attack. If Otto left, then the next to show up there would be Viserys. Plan complete. If Otto attacked, the next time anyone saw anything of Otto would be when Caraxes took a dump and Daemon would have resolved a large part of the problems surrounding Viserys. Sure, Viserys would be angry, but Otto would no longer be poisoning Viserys ear. Rhaenyra showing up saved Otto's life, and her nut up or shut up speech to Daemon made him proud. She showed spine, while Viserys sent someone else to do his work. Viserys knew good and well Otto and Daemon hate each other. Why he allowed Otto to go and relay orders is beyond me. He should have known it would not work. At least Otto was halfway clever and brought several high profile important knights with him to Dragonstone whose deaths would have turned several major houses against Daemon. It's the only smart thing Otto did there, even if it would have made no difference to Daemon.
Matt Smith is… fine, but doesn’t feel like he’s presenting “The Rogue Prince”, even though he looks it Just feels like his delivery is very shy compared to what I think he needs
@@hellfish2309 i think you mean he should be more aggressive or something, but imo Matt Smith portray a Dameon not exactly like in the book but his version is more cunning and arrogance which cause Matt to acting like that. He can easily act more agresssive to show how scary Daemon but no, he chose to act more wisely, which I can enjoy it even more than in the book. But everyone has their own opinion, i do not judge yours though.
@@Kei-yb7io honestly, I was expecting him to be Terry Silver at 50%; Terry relishes in the adversary even if he’s cheating… kinda like MCU Loki, but more bro-y and less smarmy
One thing I think more people need to understand is he is NOT a villain... he loves his brother and his niece... you could tell her was proud of her when she confronted him. Idk if it’s spoiler territory but all one needs to do is look at which side of the war he is on... it’s not him who tries to steal Rhaenyra’s throne....
@@corvus2512 sure, but I’m not getting enough from him: everything about the script says he legit loves Mysaria, but I don’t get any of it in his delivery clearly, Rhaenyra presents as a rival to him but I’m not feeling a conflict against genuine affection for his niece He SAYS he looks out for his brother, but the only time I feel it is when he shits on Corlys
Even though he didn't really show it, it was clear that Otto was furious that Rhaenyra ignored his advice in the choice of the king's guard. Viserys has probably never told him "no" in over a decade. He thought her merely a place holder, now he is finding out that she is far more.
100% he thought he could easily place his daughter in the Queen spot and ensure a new linage with his blood. Rhaenyra showing up like that and over shadowing him wasn't in his plans and now he knows he'll have to actively deal with her before placing a grandson on the throne.
You can see him look at her that was in Dragonstone as well like I know he's thinking that he can't control Rhaenyra like he does with Viserys so now he wants her gone and replaced her with Alicent and Viserys kids
And he simply doesn't like that Rhaenyra interfere because he wanted daemon to start something or hit a kingsguard (this is what he wanted when he said "declaring war against the crown), he wanted Daemon gone and he volunteered to go even though he knows daemon had a dragon he still goes because he wants daemon and Viserys to drift away and never fix their brotherhood.
Viserys WAS a dragon rider though, he rode the biggest, baddest dragon of all... Balerion the Black Dread. Aegon the Conqueror's dragon. :> It's not his fault that his dragon was so old it died not long after, but I bet it was scary as all fuck to see him mounted on Balerion while he was alive. Maybe having that immensely terrifying dragon is why he seems so scared of dragons now, his own mount intimidated him. Must be a very different experience to inherit an old one that has gone through several riders before rather than having your own baby dragon that you rise and grow up with.
It wasn’t just his age, at one point the black dread was missing with the at the time princess who tried to tame him. Returned eventually with a horrifying 9ft gaping wound in his side, other lesser but still bad wounds, and the princess was near death with strange blisters all over her face that popped. They also made specific note that Balareon stopped going out, staying inside the dragon pit and ceased growing larger despite dragons growing until death. Viserys only rode him once and was just a casual flying around the city. Then he died the following year
I’m so glad that they are sticking to conversations and political intrigue vs just CGI and special effects. Giving us time to get to know the characters and plot.
George RRM just doesnt miss with his story. This time we actually get a whole vision from him instead of just the first half. With a solid team as well
@@latinkingzgl Does the book actually have a story like Song of Ice and Fire? I started reading Fire & Blood but I felt like I was reading Silmarillion and gave up.
@@L3GIQN it's a history book. George and Ryan Condal wrote the rest to make this script. Fire and Blood has a summarization of the events that take place
ye bro i hope ppl dont complain so we get bad simple writing. i dont mind if we only get like 1 battle/2 seasons if they keep this writing. maybe the occassional 1v1 or small groups vs small groups is okay aswell
@@Mike_Dark I thought it only really looked off during the funeral scene. It feels pretty different than thrones to me since the pace is so fast and the single plot focus... but hey to each their own.
In GoT the dragons were too similar in appearance, half the time i was unsure which one i was looking at. I love that the 2 we have seen in this show are distinctly different from eachother
Daemon really faked a wedding announcement, faked a pregnancy and stole a dragon's egg just to get his brother's attention. I love jow chaotic his character is. He is easily one of my favorites in the show 😂 Can't wait for the war of the stepstones. Sundays just can't come faster enough
Daemon is a magnificent troll. Antagonized the king and hand. Conquered his niece’s seat. Stole his dead nephew’s crib egg for the baby his wife isn’t actually pregnant with. But oh btw you’re all invited to the wedding. Already more interesting than half the original show’s characters
@@CommanderOfRussia1 Joffrey with a dragon would absolutely mean the death of Westeros, LITERALLY. That slimy weasel would burn the whole country down.
@@tashaglam4824 Even Maegor, who was known as the worst King to ever sit the Iron Throne, wasn’t an idiot. Joffery is in fact, a moron and has 0 clue how to be king. He’d be the worst if he was a Targaryen, literally a younger Mad King.
The opening is the Targaryen family tree. Sync the time stamps with the episode: 0:04 - Doom of Valyria and Aegon's crown 0:13 - Rhaenys and Visenya 0:20 - Aenys 0:27 - Jaehaery and Alysane 0:35 - Baelon and Alyssa 0:43 - Daemon 0:50 - Viserys and Aemma (Arryn sigil) 1:00 - Dead Baelon 1:10 - Rhaenyra
This episode had me gripped, you could cut the tension with a Valyrian steel dagger. Milly Alcock's acting, in particular her facial acting was phenomenal. Her reaction to Alicent being chosen as the Kings new wife hit hard.
Worth remembering re: the shots of Maesters giving Otto the eye, that House Hightower rules over Oldtown, where the Maesters all train, and have immense power. So you bet they’re conscious of what the Hightower in the room has to say…
I think Daemon wasn't just proud of Rhaenyra, he also cares very deeply for his family. He is ambitious and currently seeking the respect he thinks he deserves after being denied his position as heir to a female for the first time in their history. But he loves Rhaenyra and they have a close bond which we saw in ep 1, so when she challenged him to kill her, he could not do it. Edit: it's funny how Dragonstone looks more like winter has come now then it did in seasons 7&8 when winter has actually arrived.
I disagree entirely so as Dragonstone looks VERY wintery in season 7 and 8 than what has shown in this show. Dragonstone looks smoggy and damp because of it's weather while dragonstone in season 7 and 8 REALLY does look freezing cold due to the weather. Overal the set design for both shows has been fantastic as a whole.
I loved the "lack of action" in this episode cause it meant more character development and HotD(amn) aren't most of these charachters interesting so far..Honestly I might like the first 2 episodes better than their Game of thrones counterparts, and the diallogue is so good so far :D Love the ractions guys keep it up!
LOL What? 2 episodes and MOST of these characters are VERY compelling and VERY interesting so far! There is no "aRen'T mOst" at all as the show is fantastic so far with it's fantastic cast of characters it's shown already. BRILLIANT show already!
Yep. If Viserys wanted to oust Daemon, he could have done right by Rhaenys and named her heir. After all, she already has a son and daughter to succeed her that Rhaenyra and even Daemon could have married (after somehow secretly or not so secretly disposing of his wife once the girl was of age). Think of all the war that could have been averted.
@@reebasrants2636 What cuts especially deep is that Rhaenys probably would've made a good queen compared to the next two rulers we end up having (especially with Corlys, whom we see in later events is a very good advisor, at her back)
Honestly, really impressed with the show so far, this episode was amazing. Even without "real action" it was a great episode. A clear showcase of the writing talent they have now, only matched by the earlier seasons of Game of Thrones, with a limited budget, Game of Thrones had to stand out without flashy action so there was a real need write smart and engaging dialogue. House of the Dragon did not have that need, but takes after it's predecessor when it comes to it's writing. Pacing feels just right, not too fast, not too slow. Characters are built upon in a clever and meaningful way, even though the book lacked concrete details on this, the writers manage to add something that feels natural. This is why I feel confident this series will redeem the legacy of Game of Thrones left behind for the TV world inside Westeros. Looking forward to the rest of the season, along with your reactions and so far so good.
agreed, you feel like everything is moving forward in every scene, without moving too fast. It's hard to say after only two episodes but it does feel like the writers learned from GoT mistakes and came back to the "basics" that made the franchise so great.
27:28 actually a big reason viserys was chosen as king was because he was the last rider of balerion the black dread, the dragon that belonged to aegon the conqueror. when balerion died, viserys never bonded with another dragon. you have to bond with them in order to ride them. they choose you, not the other way around.
I think Balerion was just old and tired, and did it so people would leave him alone to die in peace for the most part. "Hmm, here's this coward that avoids confrontation and fights, and tries to make everyone happy. I got ten years left before I die, might as well live fat, lazy, and well fed. Damn Targs never give me a moment of peace."
@@a.a677 it didn't matter that balerion had already died before the great council. the fact that balerion, the largest, most significant dragon in the history targaeryen, let viserys and not any other person, ride him was what matter in the eyes of the great council, as it was a testament of strength in their views. that was one of the reason the great council needed to back up their reason for choosing viserys
King Viserys actually had a dragon, he was the last rider of Balerion who was the dragon that belonged to Aegon the conqueror, the biggest dragon to ever fly in Westeros.
Viserys should've told Rhaenyra in advance that he was seeing her best friend for 6 months before announcing their marriage. Now there is this cold war between them.
He probably was shocked she didn't know. 'I've been with her privately for 6 months, people have seen us together... wouldn't that be a huge rumor everyone knows by now?'
I'm actually excited to dive into the Crabfeeder arc. Myr, Lys, and Tyrosh are 3 major parts of Essos we've never seen or really heard of, on screen, as well as the Stepstones. Fun fact the current big dragon Vhagar was Visenya Targaryen's dragon when she aided her brother Aegon in conquering the 7 kingdoms. Arya also talks of Vhagar n Visenya destroying the towers in Harrenhal to Tywin in GoT.
My eyes are glued to the screen whenever Otto Hightower pops up, he's like a deadly combination of Littlefinger and Tywin Lannister. He really puts me on edge without doing anything.
1. That bridge scene. The bridge in the sky, among the clouds. They are using the new Volume tech they used in Mandalorian. They are large LED walls that replaces old green screens. They then feed everything through the Unreal game engine, so they can see all the sfx in the camera as they film and change lighting, scenery sun/moon and objects wherever they like. The practical sets are much larger and deeper than they were in GoT as well. 2. Dreamfyre. The electric blue lady dragon who's eggs it is implied in the books that Dany ended up with in the GoT timeline 3. Now Alicent is going to die a horrible death simply because that king is weak and did not put the realm first.
I was thinking the same thing, Hightower completely dropped his stoic mask and didn’t even attempt to hide that he caused this outcome. Everyone in that council meeting including Rhaenyra and the King should know he was responsible purely from his facial expressions alone.
Man I LOVED this episode. This episode was a prime example of what makes A Song of Ice and Fire so damn great. It's so much more than bloodshed and sex (those are fun too). So much tension and uncomfortable cringing from the political scheming. The scene on Dragonstone in particular was perfection. I loved the subtle camera movement and feeling of instant dread that came across everyone as Caraxes announced his presence. The build up to the Crabfeeder was also fantastic and ominous. Can't wait for next week.
Sir Ryam Redwyne the previous Lord Commander was one of the most renowned and storied warriors of his time, people in later times will give examples of his loyalty and examplary conduct. He was also from a great and wealthy House Redwyne of the Reach like the Hightowers. His hayday was during the old King Jaehaerys' time he even served as Hand of the King for a year, by now he was really old and he passed away peacefully in his sleep.
Yes. Jaehaerys' oldest sister, Rhaena, had a sister-in-law (rumoured to be consort) who stole three dragon eggs from her and fled Dragonstone. She sailed so far west that the books suggest she ended up back in the far east, in Asshai. Presumably the eggs were passed around Essos until they eventually returned to Targaryen hands through Daenerys.
I just remembered that the Citadel is in Oldtown where House Hightower's seat is, so who wants to bet that the Grand Maester is in Otto's pocket, and is not healing the King as best as he could be?
Alicent is 14/15 in this show, the same age as Rhaenyra, so really, Viserys saying he doesn’t want to marry a 12 year old and then turning around to marry a 14/15 year old is not exactly “better”, it’s really the same level of terrible because they’re both kids. But Viserys marrying Laena would have signaled to Rhaenyra that it was for duty. Him choosing Alicent means there’s feelings involved and I think that is the thing that hits Rhaenyra.
Some. But really, he can immediately start breeding Alicent for a chance at another male heir. Otherwise, he'd have to wait several more years with more whining about needing more heirs to ensure stability other than Rhaenyra.
Not quite, Alicent is a little bit older than Rhaenyra. She's in the 16 to 18 range. In the book she was betrothed to the king at 18. And the actress is 19. You can't really compare that to Laena who is 12. It's a prepubescent child vs a young adult. Alicent is much more mature in every way compared with Laena. So while it's still gross by modern standards, especially since these girls all have no choice, I still think it would have been way worse to marry Laena.
I really hate that the show changed Alicent's age. Viserys is 29 when he marries 18 year old Alicent Hightower. I can only imagine it was a decision to make Viserys look worse.
I love how princess Laena is so curious about Vhagar not knowing she will be the one to ride Vhagar in the future. Also, isn’t Viserys a dragon rider too? He rode Balerion and never bonded with any dragon after Balerion’s death.
The wound on his hand happened as he was stripping Daemon of being the heir, which was manipulated by...the Hand of the King, Otto Hightower. When the maester was talking about the wound, he suggesting doing everything possible to hold onto the digit, instead of cutting it away. I wonder if the King will have to decide whether to keep Otto as hand of the king, or to amputate him, like he should his finger.
It's such an interesting thing that even after everything that's happened, up to this point, that Daemon still cares deeply about his brother and Rhaenyra especially. The line about only him getting to talk smack about his brother is such a "a family may cut each other the deepest, but they will also defend each other the hardest." And the scene on the bridge was just amazing.
As soon as I saw the Princess arriving at Dragonstone, I immediately thought of the "Lion King" "you deliberately disobey me" scene, and they did it pretty much the same way too.
I think Daemon was trying to provoke the king, so he could hand him an easy win, which would make the king look strong, in the hopes of getting his approval. But since Viserys staunchly refuses to make any politicaly smart decisions and lets himself be played by Otto Hightower, any attempt to help him is twisted into a threat to the crown. Despite Daemons ambition I think he is very intelligent and well intentioned towards his family, Viserys is just to dense to realize that Otto is trying to split the Targaryens so that he can fill the power vacuum.
Take note of *Laena* *Velaryon.* She's talking about *Vhagar.* Laena will be an important ally to two of the main characters for the future wars to come. She's only 12 but she'll grow up and marry... 🤐 Three different actresses will portray her in this series. The oldest one, Nanna Blondell, appeared in Black Widow (2021). I became Team Daemon/Black the moment Matt Smith uttered the words "pack of hounds" and "squalor". But I do enjoy the sleaziness coming from Otto "Middlefinger" Hightower. I believe I'll remain on Team Rhaenyra/Daemon even after Blood and Cheese happens because I think the Hightowers screwed this all up by not honoring Viserys' will that Rhaenyra should be Queen. It doesn't make sense to be pressured to marry someone else after 6 months so the king can produce male heirs when Viserys just named Rhaenyra as his heir in Ep 1! 🤣 Hello? Then what the hell was all that talk about you messing up by always ignoring your daughter for succession? Viserys chose "friend" over family. He chose poorly. All Daemon is trying to tell Viserys is he needs protection. He needs a REAL MAN by his side. Daemon can wipe out leeches and infiltrators like the Hightowers. But Viserys is too weak to be a king. A grown-up Tommen. He's easily influenced by outside his bloodline. He didn't listen. By listening to Otto, this will be House Targaryen's downfall. Otto is a parasite. He's already entered Viserys' bloodstream by having her daughter be Viserys' next Queen. Marrying Alicent means a civil war between Targaryens. 🤦🏻♂️ Viserys should've chose Laena. She's a sound pick. It doesn't look right at that moment because she's just a child, but Laena will grow up to be a bad*ss character. VHAGAR, baby. VHAGAR. And Laena happens to be Viserys' favorite cousin's daughter. Or Viserys should've just listened to Daemon and let Daemon cut Otto's throat. Laena is only 12 but Daenerys was 13 in the books when she marries Khal Drogo. The writers aged her up to 17 in the show. If you close your eyes, Daemon does sound like Ramsay Bolton when he's speaking. Find a Ramsay scene on RU-vid where he's talking. They do sound alike. So Daemon is a mixture of a lot of characters: Tyrion's intelligence, wit, and whore-mongering. Jaime's nobility, brotherly love, swordmanship, and physical attractiveness. Oberyn's wild temperament. Hints of Bronn and Euron in there. And Ramsay's voice and touch of sadism. Complex indeed. It's all Viserys' fault. Or maybe Jaehaerys' for passing on Rhaenys because she wasn't born with a penis. 🤦🏻♂️ At least Rhaenys even as a salty, bitter old woman she became is still a dragonrider. I'd be bitter too if my title is "The Queen Who Never Was". That sounds way more insulting than Kingslayer. Viserys lost his dragon before his ascension to the throne.
Daemon should call in House Celtigar, the other Valyrian house under the Targaryeans. Their sigls are a bunch of red crabs and they have a valyrian steel battle-axe.
This is why GOT/HOT D talk is awesome. It's like sporting events. You have these fav characters. You want them to survive. Then you can do fantasy matchups like MJ vs. Kobe vs. LeBron.
Is Daemon really that shitty (for Westoros)? He's not like Joffrey or Ramsay at all. He does seem to have a moral code. He doesn't kill or torture just for the fun of it. He won't let anyone speak ill of his brother even when he is mad at him. I think he is more like a Jaime Lannister where we have to first know what his POV is.
Not really. I think the council are just scared that they wouldn't be able to control him like they can manipulate and control Viserys, so they start scare tactics, claiming that Daemon would be a violent lunatic like Maegor the Cruel.
Nah. Considering Otto is hand of the king and Daemon fucking hates him it makes perfect sense him to vilify Daemon and have him replaced as heir. Corlys even backed Daemon as heir before he saw the opportunity to get Rhaenys on the throne. To be fair I don't think he'd be the best peace time king but he's not the monster Otto makes him out to be.
Daemon would Bobby B that throne in a second. He'd appoint Rhaenyra as his Hand, turn Otto into dragonpoo, and clean the crab boys out of the stepstones. Then, he'd cut trade with the closest free cities comprised of the triarchy, blame the danger of the pirates, and only trade with the other free cities while just burning any ships crossing the stepstones from the Essos side, while blaming the pirates for the losses. Eventually, the triarchy would stop their little games. Daemon is quite easy to understand. He loves his family, and if you cross them or try to screw them over, he makes it his life's ambition to embarrass and kill you.
Yes. He has the attention span of a ten year old on a sugar high and a tendency to do rash and violent things when hes bored, frustrated or just because its thursday. He would be a terrible administrator or diplomat, think of all robert Baratheons worst faults with an added tendency to invasions.
He's Jaime, but with a lot more political knowledge. This is why Otto wanted to get Daemon out of the council immediately after Aemma's death. He cannot easily be manipulated. Daemon would NEVER allow his brother to marry those Hightowers. He despises Otto so much. He will push the Velaryons instead. Otto doesn't see Rhaenyra as a threat AT ALL, that's why he considered the matter of succession urgent, and pushed Rhaenyra as heir, so her claim will be shaky once Alicent became Queen and had a son. The one major move Otto always wanted to do is to get rid of Daemon. Episode 2 is already an early testament that Daemon would NEVER usurp his family just to be on the throne. And the council of leeches are just demonizing him as another Maegor, so Viserys would not trust him.
Is he? Seemed to me allicent makes more sense as she can get pregnant and produce an heir faster than corlys’ daughter. But then Again I’m just on episode 2. His scenes so far didn’t read that he’s in “love” with allicent to me
@@jaysax7381 clearly, she’s 5-6 years older but Laena is pure Valerian blood and daughter to the wealthiest man in Westeros. It’s worth the risk. He should’ve married her and waited till she was of age to get her pregnant, as shitty as it sounds but we’re speaking in context here.
Daemon trolling the shit out of Otto and Crispen, lol. Looking forward to whatever Corlys and Daemon are cooking up. Viserys seems unable to make any good decisions - his council are preying on him exactly as Daemon said. Oh, and Caraxes is the goodest boi.
Did you see Otto's face when Rhaenyra took back the egg and was leaving Dragonstone? This is the moment when Otto realizes that Rhaenyra is going to be a problem to his plans. The only reason he wanted her named as heir was to oust Deamon from the line of succession. As soon as his daughter gave the king a son Rhaenyra would be out of the succession as well. Now he sees that she is not going to be just a pawn he can use now and discard later. She is a player of the game, a strong and dangerous one and she is going to be even more dangerous to him when she teams up (I am not saying how - no spoiler) with Deamon.
Yes, the Crabfeeder is a Myrish prince named Craghas Drahar who is infected with Greyscale which is why he wears a mask. The Triarchy is Myr, Lys and Tyrosh. Three city states who invaded the step stone islands which separate Essos and Westeros. They did it to rid the Step Stones of pirates which have been pirate strongholds for decades - ------- and eventually Craghas became a dictator and abused Westerosi vessels and would stake sailors out in the tide to be drowned and be eaten by the crabs.
I actually enjoyed this episode way more than the first one even though not a lot of actiony stuff happened. There was so much tension. I'm enjoying Daemon a lot more than I thought. When I read about him I was kind of not into his character but he is so fun.
Not a spoiler for the show but we know that the Dragon eggs that daenerys targaryen has are heavily implied to be the eggs stolen be Elissa Farmen 50 years before the events of this show. She sold them in the free cities to raise funds to build a ship to sail around the world in. The eggs were also laid by dreamfyre ( the dragon who laid the egg in this episode)
In theory, if something were to happen to Viserys now, Rhaenyra would sit in the same chair and preside over the same men that she was serving food to the day before. I think, considering what Rhaenys said, "you're still there serving those men their cups", that the position of cupbearer is supposed to show that no one takes seriously Rhaenyra as the heir to the throne. This is reinforced by how they dismiss her when she speaks.
An important thing to remember regarding Otto and the maesters: both house Hightower and the maesters are centered in Oldtown, so they might have similar interests.
Rhaenyra has better ruler qualities than either Viserys or Daemon. We already saw what a strategist she is in Ep 2 as a 15-year-old. Viserys can't just walk back what he said to her in Ep 1 just because he'll finally have a son. The gist of the first two episodes was mostly parents pimping their children to the king even if they haven't got their first period yet. That's normal back in those medieval times. I think Daemon is better off as an army general. Not a king 👑. But Otto keeps throwing Daemon under the bus whether in front of him or behind his back that it makes Viserys push away his brother. We never even see or hear Daemon say "heir for a day". For all we know, it was taken out of context and Otto made it seem Daemon was mocking the baby's death. Made it sound much worse than what really happened. In the real world, Viserys makes a good king. He's a very good man. But in a world like Game of Thrones full of backstabbing and power-seeking characters like a Littlefinger or Otto, he makes for a weak and vulnerable king. You saw Corlys and Rhaenyra storm out after he chose Alicent. A respected king would not have people turn their back on him like that. That means they don't respect him enough. If I was Viserys, I would ally myself towards my brother. Not a Hand pimping his daughter towards me to marry her. Blood is thicker than water. At least Corlys isn't that gullible. He wants the strength of Daemon on his side to take out the Crabfeeder or any other dangerous threat. Daemon to me is the most unbeatable character in HOT D. He has no weaknesses when it comes to war and he has a huge dragon to ride on. Daemon is the type of ally you need when 💩 hits the fan and 💩 will hit the fan after Viserys dies. Daemon doesn't need to be king. Could put him as your Kingsguard. Or army general. He can command ships while riding Caraxes. Heck, he doesn't need a fleet or army. Just ride Caraxes and burn everything down. All Daemon wanted was affection and attention from his brother. Not be pushed away to do odd jobs. Only his love for his brother and niece is stopping him from taking over the Seven Kingdoms by brute force. Very happy for Matt "Daemon" Smith. He got the role of a lifetime. He's going to shoot a lot of sex scenes with women of color. Women with African descent. Then more people will say it's WOKE from all the race-bending and interracial couples when GOT was blasted for not having a lot of Black characters for years and years. John Boyega even mentioned it. Don't hate the playa (Daemon), hate the game (Otto's chessboard).
Without reading the books and just watching the show I think you might give Daemon too much credit. He definatly wouldn't be fine with just his brothers admiration. He saw himself as rightful heir and will keep doing so. And with Corlys on his side now he is strenghtened in his resolve. I'll start the books soon enough but from just the show alone I don't think Daemon will go down without an excessive show of force.
Did you get the idea that Rhaenyra is a better strategist because she went to talk to her uncle or??? Also I don’t understand where the idea of Daemon being able to take the kingdom by force comes from ? He doesn’t have anyone in the kingdom backing him. that’s the whole purpose as to why they want the king to get remarried so he can produce more heirs because the notion of Daemon being heir is unsettling to the kingdom as clearly stated in the first episode. The only reason why Daemon hasn’t been killed for the things he’s done is because he is the kings brother and the king loves him enough to forgive his childish actions
@@jac_o7 actually it seems common people like him alot which is part of how he got the nickname "the prince of the city" but yeah all the lords dont like him
44:58 rickon stark's face though :))) he was annoyed for sure. "the city's hot, the food's weird, and their gods are wrong. this meeting could've been ravened". for real though, in the book the starks were big supporters of rhaenys' claim 9 years ago so he was probably grumbling all his way down that none of this would be necessary if viserys was not chosen. and he had just made a trip 9 years ago too. for all we know, the starks could've had 60 years of happy reclusion in the north during the old king jaehaerys' rule. until viserys, they never had to come down south, now twice in less than a decade.
0:15 still got it kind of wrong. You're right that Rhaenys and Viserys are cousins, but wrong in the sense that the rule was never in the hands of Rhaenys's father to take away to give to the cousin, which seemed to be implied to me. It would have been much more scandalous if Rhaenys's father were the king, then died, and the crown was passed not to his daughter but to his brother's son. What happened was that Jaehaerys lived so long that he actually outlived all of his male heirs, so he had no direct heir to inherit the throne. But he did have three sons, Aemon and Baelon, who both in turn had children before they died, and Vaegon. Aemon was Jaehaerys's first son and was the heir apparent, and Rhaenys was his daughter. Baelon was the second son and had Viserys as a son. Vaegon was his third son, who swore a vow to the Seven and renounced all claims to inherit. Both Aemon and Baelon died before Jaehaerys did. Aemon died in 92 AC. The question of heir came up here: do we go with the daughter of the heir apparent, or his brother? Ultimately Jaehaerys decided to name Balon his new heir, since he already had a son Viserys to ensure the continuity of the throne, while Rhaenys was only 16 and pregnant. If she died in childbirth as the heir or her kid did not survive childhood then it would put the succession in question, so they named Baelon the new heir apparent. Then Baelon died in 98 AC, leaving no direct male heirs. Jaehaerys didn't know how to handle this, so he gave the decision to a Great Council of lords and maesters to decide and that he would honour their decision. Rhaenys, her son Laenor, and Viserys were the final three to debate. Viserys was Jaehaerys's grandson, and was already 24, while Laenor was his great-grandson and was only 7. Ultimately Viserys was chosen as heir since he was the closest adult male heir so he could immediately begin rule without a lengthy stewardship, and Rhaenys' claim was discarded again, as well as her son's.
The reason Viserys choose Alicent because she was the only one he could talk to who did not have an ulterior motive to keep him company. Viserys made the first choice for himself and this choice will cause chaos and destruction.
Nope. Still got it wrong. Rhaenys isn't the first born daughter. Her father was the first born son of the previous king. Viserys was the son of the king's second son.
Regarding the correction at the start... To be clear, Rhaenys was the GRANDdaughter of King Jaehaerysi, not his daughter (as Calvin's comment implied). She is the only child of the previous king's eldest son. Also, her mother is a Baratheon. And King Jaehaerysi married his sister.
It's absolutely hilarious how much of a child Daemon is, just lashing out in any way for his brother's attention and approval lmao. I love him so much. Caraxes also looks fucking creepy and badass, truly earning the name "Blood Wyrm" with his unnaturally long neck and body. Next week's gonna be hype with the Conquest of the Stepstones!
He did it to get a reaction out of the king everyone thinks is idle. That is a brother trying to rouse his brother to action, not childishness. Daemon would be willing to kill Otto, but he would never hurt his brother, and never Rahenyra, which the dragons know and so they're not being aggresive.
i don't think the hand was angry after that, he knew before she showed up they were only leaving alive if daemon allowed it. once rhaenyra showed up and there was almost equal power the chance for violence dramatically decreased. to me, he looked like he was looking at a queen, like she was way more powerful and wise than his ego allowed him to see earlier.
I found yall because of your reaction to the HOTD trailer and I have now binged your GOT reactions and am making my way through your mailbag library. I'm so glad I found Blind Wave. Such a great vibe
I was kind of hyped for a new intro theme, so I was a bit disappointed they stuck with the original GoT theme. I think even though HotD is within the same canon and universe, it should be able to stand on its own and establish its own identity, instead of using GoT as a crutch to lean on, because not everyone remembers GoT fondly. The main GoT theme is way too deeply ingrained in pop-culture. Nobody is going to hear this theme and think 'Oh, House of the Dragon, right?'. I mean, if anyone could have done a theme that could stand up to the original, it's Ramin. Hopefully we'll hear something new in Season 2.
Driftwood Throne is a cool name because it implies it was made of whatever the they could find in the sea. May sound like a "poor man's throne" until you consider how Corlys made his fortune and built his castle off of his voyages across the seas Respect it! Badass in its own "by your own bootstraps" kinda way.
Absolutely love this show. As a GOT this is what I needed. Watching so far 3 things I suspect.... 1 - someone is poisoning the throne 2 - The hand is not to be trusted 3 - SHITS ABOUT TO GET REAL
I don’t think it’s too early to say that without Matt Smith in this show, it wouldn’t be nearly as decent as it has been thus far. It’s only been two episodes but man can that man act. All of the acting is excellent but there’s just something about Smiths presentation that makes the Daemon character such a badass. Enjoyed the ep despite being a slower one. These eps are what made GOT so good One critique- you gotta increase the volume of the episode during your reaction! But I love the “reek” “shit!” tee shirts. Lol
Since the Red Witch Melisandre is 209 years old at this timeline in the show, does Blind Wave think we might see her on this show. I think the hand is the bad guy at this point.
Who's the guy on the left with the Reeh shirt? He's my favorite. I love how excited he is when he talks about these things. It's so refreshing to see. ❤
Sorry for being so off topic and it's really not my place so obviously feel free to ignore me, but Aaron absolutely needs to see a doctor about his coughing/throat clearing issues if he hasn't already. Man can barely speak without having to aggressively clear his throat, and it far precedes getting Covid. Could be nothing but could be a problem. My mum was like that for a while but not even as bad and she ended up needing quite intense medical help
Eric is dead on the money about the maester and Otto. The Hightowers are from Oldtown, just as the maesters, and there's a known "theory" (is this accepted as canon?) that the Maesters are working to eradicate the Targaryens.
When the iron throne cuts you it means that it is rejecting you a d that you're not fit to sit the chair, so Viserys sitting the throne and getting cut symbolizes that he isn't cut out to be King
it is so so refreshing watching game of thrones where the writing of the show actually leads to crazy tension. i feel like a lot of the last seasons in game of thrones truly lacked that. like they knew where they wanted the story to go and knew there would be conflict/tension, but absolutely sucked at writing it to get to that point.
