After what happened, or what didn’t happen with blood and cheese, it’s clear we can’t go by what happened “in the books”. They might make them best friends or they might make them lovers, who knows at this point.
It’s also crazy how he mentions serving the wall was an honor, not a sentence. Makes you wonder when it started becoming a sentence rather than an honorable duty.
@@troyb4533 Northerners indeed respect NW a lot more, for everyone South, it's just a banishment place to freeze your balls off and "defend" the realm from grumkins and snarks. House of the Dragon presents the end of the golden age of Westeros, it's all downhill from this point, so it's no surprise that NW also fell on bad times.
Seeing Winterfell and hearing the Stark theme again feels like coming home. The Targaryens really took the Starks and the North for granted throughout their reign, I feel.
They did. The Starks was super loyal to the Targs, never rebelling and always uniting the North. They bent the knee to them, helped Jaehaerys and respected Viserys wish. They took multiple armies south during the Dance, the Dornish wars, and Blackfyre Rebellions. And what did it get them? Pretty much nothing. They were scorned and forgotten. There's a reason why the Starks liked Robert, he's the first and only king that respected the North. Targs deserved the fate They got
I love the line about how King Jaehaerys went to the Wall and saw his dragons refuse to fly over it. As a Targaryen king, he would have known about Aegon’s prophecy but maybe he had doubts as to its validity. But actually going to the Wall and seeing how his dragons reacted to it must have had him thinking “okay, yeah, there really is something bad out there.”
@@HfrizkYeah it was legit only good Queen Alysanne. However it’s not THAT much of a lore change to make it both the old King & his Queen. I’m 95% sure Vermithor would have refused to cross as well.
@@AgeoftheGeek_I actually think he might’ve tried considering alysanne tried she definitely would’ve told jaehareys about it so he did come and it is highly possible both tried together but neither wanted to go this might’ve put some idea in his head that maybe it connects to the song of ice and fire.
@@Mcherri That’s a possibility. Jaehaerys came much later on as he was dealing with issues in Kings Landing. It’s not a stretch to say when he finally flew up to Winterfell that he tried to get Vermithor over the wall after speaking w/ Alysanne.
It felt so good to be back home at Winterfell. The opening scene was just emotional, soo nostalgic and it was so wonderful to see Lord Cregan carrying the Stark ancestry sword Ice.. Cregan stark casting and acting is top notch. Also gotta love Jace and Cregan's dialogue, you can almost feel how they click.. almost like they are bros. The beautiful music and scene gives me so much chills.. truly memorable.
Cregan being the one to deliver the news to Jace would have to be soul crushing. They were best bros. I liked how they open the season with a raven flying into Winterfell then end the scene on The Wall with news from a raven that Luc had been killed. Good writing 😭😖
Jace crawling up ol' Torrhen's buttocks to get on Cregan's good side. "Oh yea he totally knelt because he saw potential in unity, not because there were 3 dragons knocking on his door, ready to bathe the north in fire."
@rainstriderstreamflower5645 I thought that they thought the White Walkers were just a myth at that point? Because according to legend, they hadnt been seen in over 8 thousand years. And when the third horn blew, Sam and the others couldn't remember at first what that meant because the horn never blew three times before.
@@KMDragonS I think Reah did not get a chance to tell her son Ageon the third, the song of ice and fire before she died. With her death the true purpose of the conquest to make the 7 kingdoms into a bulwark was lost to time.
Winterfell, the Wall, House Stark theme, Night's Watch, that northern accent, those boiled leather armor, Starks talking about honor, duty and winter GoT s1 nostalgia has never been so back
It feels like to be finally back home, it's very nostalgic and I am grateful for this masterpiece. It's amazing that the season starts with the memory of Starks. I want to see more from Cregan
1:56 I like how Jace was trying to be a smooth diplomate and Cregan just knocked off that strategy with a harmless joke. After it became more genuine and respectful
@@Mozee854you don’t know what northern sounds like yet make such confident claims otherwise, must be American, or worse, a horse faced home counties posho
Starks are probably the most opposed House to the philosophy of Ends justifying the means, that philosophy drives Arthas and brings his very doom, in the end.
Jace isn't. Jace died without issue. his half-brothers, Daemon's sons Aegon III and Vicerys II reigned and were Rhaegar and Jon's ancestors (at least Vicerys)
Here in this time, the Night's Watch is still strong and well manned. The Starks take their duty to maintain the Wall very seriously and even seem to be well aware of the reason for its existence. It makes me wonder what exactly happened in the next 200 years for this all to completely fall apart.
I think Aegon the conqueror told Torren Stark about his dream of the white walker invasion which convinced him the legends of his families ancient past was true and the Nights Watch was there for an important reason. With the civil war the custom of passing down the conquerors dream to the heir of the Iron Throne was stopped and over time forgotten about and made the white Walkers fade back into bed time stories
this was right before he learned of his baby brother's death. i thought i recovered from his death, but boy i was wrong. seeing cregan receiving the letter was all i needed to get emotional all over again. jace learning of luke's death... 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Damn, I was really hoping they were gonna show how close Cregan and Jacaerys had become. The two had become fast friends and had even become close enough where Jacaerys even agreed to wed his children with Cregan’s.
Love the use of the lot system to ensure the Knight's Watch is properly manned. Would be interesting to see if a later spin off covers the reasoning behing ending the practice.
Possibly because of too many losses among the population; the Dance is followed by a harsh fibe-year winter which brought mass starvation. The south send their scum and unwanted to the Wall, of course, but when they're still recovering and when the holds and villages of the North have no men to spare, the Watch goes without.
Jacaerys is a loyal man and worthy heir to the iron throne. He is more of a handsome and respectable prince. I hope to see more of him in this new season. He is my favorite of the black team..
@@markbrown8533 I don't think they forgot about it, more that the Stark household shrunk in size so there was little need to keep it going. Imagine the lord only has the one son and a bunch of daughters, or that there are few cousins that could inherit the lordship of Winterfell should some tragedy befall the family. At the beginning of GoT, the only Starks in the main branch are Ned and his family and Benjen. Should Brandon have survived and had sons, and Ned and Benjen done the same, then I believe the tradition would have returned considering there's a high likelihood of all three brothers having enough sons between them that they could have brought it back.
"What does it keep out?" "Death" "Ok pretty cool line and all but that doesn't really tell me anything. Is it wights? If it's wights you can just say wights, dude."
They better not ruin Cregan in the live action show. In the books hes not only a badass but the only reason why the Targaryen exist. The only reason the realm didnt crumble.
I wonder if Jace knows about Aegon's dream. If he does, then his great great grandparents not being able to convince their dragons to cross the wall would make more sense
OK WE NEED a Series focused on the Starks of the Past. Give me House Stark before the Wall was built v the First Night King in the Long night. I guarantee you that would sell a lot.
Is it just me or does jace fit so much better in this environment than at dragonstone? When i saw this scene it instantly brought me back to the good ol early GOT days
3:32-4:06 I love how you can faintly hear the theme used for the White Walkers in the background. Not only is it beautiful but it just adds a new level of foreboding for what to come in the future.
A friend of mine who also watched both GOT and HOTD made a good point about how with HOTD it’s a little surreal to see families as factions that were really prominent in GOT take a backseat in this series. Starks, Lannisters, Baratheons etc. have a completely different vibe compared to their counterparts in GOT but we still get some similarities and parallels as well.
@Nameless0061 How so? Executive producer, full creator credit, lawyered up to the fucking gills unlike last time when he was a struggling writer hoodwinked by some Hollywood big shots and the last last few season of Got were the result. He now fully controls the world he created. If you have some alternative facts please tell me.
An army of middle-aged and elderly may not seem like much but they've got a lifetime of experience and hardening, and nothing much to lose so late in the game.
It is also a kinder end for them. It's known during harsh winters ( or the last long night) northern men would go in the winter so that their families can survive on the supplies. This gives them a way . A ) provide more money to their families ( assuming they are paid to fight) B) gives them a honorable death fighting to save the crown ( hero tales) C) allows them able for reward , imagine the crown thanking the northen soilders by offering spoils/ lands D) honors them as soidlers and his oath to the north and south. AAAND like many have pointed out they might be older, but that comes with batttle and life experaince not to mention their standard kit might be better consdiering they had more time to get gear over time.
I wish they did a show of young ned and robert at rebellion. And hope they give some important role to cregan in hotd with his head kept until the end.
That's why everyone respects The Starks. No flaying like Boltons,no invest like Lannisters and Targaryens, no murdering of guests like Freys. They all are people of honor and duty and are pure badasses.
