Ryan Condal, Miguel Sapochnik, Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen), and more speak to the timejump in the third episode, Viserys and Rhaenyra's mental states during the hunt, and Daemon's fight at the Stepstones.
He had conflicts in himself and every judgement. That made him more real as a person. As in the first episode, he loved his wife but he need his son enough to do that. I still think he was too weak for being king, he had got the throne because there was only one woman to candidate with, and that’s why the story begin. It was ironic that he finally had a son he always want but still remained his dauther as an heir because of feeling guilty about her mother.
I love his character in the show, I know he's not popular because he's making mistakes after another, but this is why I love him, he's so human and complex as a character.
This was by far his best episode. 👌 Top class. Thanks to rewatching game of thrones iv a good idea what will happen to people in this. And with all the idiots on RU-vid spoiling alot. I still want to be a bit surprised to how and why things happened. Paddy is a top actor 👏
My favorite part was when it was Rhaenyra who encountered the white hart; amazing symbolism I wish her father could’ve seen it; she truly was meant to be queen
Yeah I noticed that also. How he killed the brown one. And the white one shows up for her after she just killed the bore. I think it is a symbol for things to come for Rhaenyra
@@rockytribiani81 I'd like to think the White Hart appearing to Rhaenyra as a foreshadowing that her line is the one who's going to sit on the Iron Throne.
@@mellasius6240 true it's like the boar attacking her are the symbolism of the people who doesn't like her on the throne and then after all that bloodshed her line will sit on it.
@@TacitusKillgore1 I thought it was kinda cool. You know, he's this guy who's riding a dragon to battle for the first time, he's young, it was kind of a carefree moment too.
dude the opening scene where he is yelling for the crab feeder and then all the flaming arrows went flying my mouth had to be scooped up from the floor. he is only in the beginning and end of this episode but goddam every second hes on screen its just heart pumping badassery
He was super badass during his "bait" mission, but what led up to it really hooked me. When Daemon got the letter and he subtly lifted his lips, I was wondering, "Is he relieved? Surprised?" Then he just beat the shit out of the messenger. Lol. That gave him all the motivation he needed to deliver a crushing blow to his enemies.
I'm not sure how many people have caught it, but by episode 3 the last two digits on the king's left hand had rotted off. The attention to detail on this show is incredible.
rhaenyra is not conflicted. she's the rightful ruler right now and should be crowned right now instead of a 2 year old, instead all these bs drama because grrm who is male and a very very too old male at that, still hasn't delivered a canon end to that other canon series decided to write a shitty drama for drama sake backstory. don't matter if he's a huge history buff when this is fantasy instead of future fi and therefore not very introspective nor prophetic
The Stepstone scene was truly garbage and you're the perfect representation of a blind fan. That scene made no sense at all. The plot armour was ridiculous. The dragons could have been used to flush out that position years ago. Weak battle.
He was not as confident in saying it though so this might have been the first time he actually rode sea smoke into battle, if not one of the first times ever.
It would be fantastic, except that they gave Craghas a fairly advanced case of Greyscale and had Daemon drag him while touching his bare skin. The disease is so contagious that Daemon will need to have that hand amputated or risk becoming a stoneman himself.
@@magister343 It is known that Targaryens are not afflicted by diseases like most other men. They just don't get sick. In Dance with Dragons, Dany walks among people dying from the flux outside Mereen and does not catch it. Even though there was an outbreak and it was contagious. Not sure if the same applies to greyscale or not. We shall see I suppose
@@honeybee4016 Well, Viserys got infected wounds from the iron throne. Maybe some Targaryens are more resistant to diseases than others. But the fact that the crab feeder has this disease - this is not something a writer creates for a random fact. He has this disease for a reason and well... Deamon touched him. I guess this is the reason the crab feeder has it.
@@LevelFear daemon doesn't contract it and getting cuts from the throne is not a diseases. The Targaryens are immune to greyscale also known as the curse of valyria
Jason Lannister basically reminded me of what would happen if Tywin had the mannerisms and behavior of Tyrion. Also, it is interesting to see how Rhaenyra isn’t so fond of her father anymore, constantly quarreling, while acting bitter and hostile towards Alicent, her former best friend now stepmother
Well both her father and best friend Went behind her back and manipulated her a bit (Not counting the tension of a different type with Alicent) and then had a male child together in a world where Male Heirs are far more Valued, with what her nearest female family member (who was passed over herself) Said, ringing in her ear.... I can see why she may be feeling a little Miffed and out of sorts lol 😀
best episode yet! Paddy is playing such a relatable yet troubled Viserys, greatly improved from his book character. Matt Smith gives a truly epic Daemon performance without a single word.
@@rouskeycarpel1436 That's stupid. How can you plan for that? It definitely is plot armour. He gets hit twice out of hundreds of arrows, luckily none of the hits are fatal. He somehow 1v1s his way through every single soldier that attacks him, and then when he's surrounded, somehow his army arrives and a dragon save him at the last second, when no plan was discussed (that we know of, we just say him sail way angrily). It was all deus ex machina and lazy writing. All style and very little substance.
I feel Rhnaerya's frustration. After naming her heir, Daddy has effectively pushed her aside rather than supporting her in council meetings. He dismissed her and now wonders why she's hostile? If Alicente had told her privately of Otto'a machinations I think the friendship between the girls would have survived the King's marriage.. Pity Alicente didn't have more of a backbone. Trying 2-3 years after the wedding is kinda late.
@@rozz1864 these days a woman at her position would make the same choice and even trap her friend into a false claim to jail her. Options don't imply better. Alicent is a girl who plays by the rules and it payed off for her. Both Alicent and Rhaynyra are great well written strong female caracters. Unlike the cringy femenist mcu or disney caracters.
@@rozz1864 True, women at that time had not much choice, but Alicent chose to not tell Rhaenyra what was going on that she was slowly working her way into the King's heart the last 6 months after Rhaenyra's mother passing. From the first episode, Alicent was showed to be attuned with the working of the court and cares about positions. She chided Rhaenyra (who pretended) when Rhaenyra acted as if it didn't bother her. Alicent was also aware the implication when her father insisted that she made her self look more mature (she was 14, after all LOL) by wearing her mother's dress while comforting the King. She knows where the whole persuasion can go if she succeeds in working Viserys, it'll be against Rhaenyra. This is why Rhaenyra felt very bertrayed by Alicent...Alicent was the person she thought was fully on her corner (her supporter), but it turned out she was politicking alongside her family all along... Not saying that Alicent was not conflicted about doing that to her friend but we all know she chose to do it to elevate her standing and her family's standing.
I wish they talked more about the stark difference between rhaenyra and Viserys during the hunt. The king goes off and struggles to kill a captured stag, and then you have rhaenyra walk in after leaving in anger, covered in blood with a dead boar in tow. That difference in presence is a representation of the varying strengths of the Targaryen house. It’s a shame they didn’t bring it up
yep, such a missed opportunity in the writing and even editing to show the contrast and the reactions of those around it to each. the two ppl who react to her walking into camp are not very clear what their reaction even is.
to be fair; viserys was WASTED. But yea i get your point. Im also not sure if I was just imagining things but did viserys put on weight? he seems puffier and softer
I love how the showrunners added so much layers, details and personalities to characters that were just "there" in the book. This show is shaping up to be amazing, looking forward to more!
Matt and Paddy’s acting really sell their characters for me, and when they’re both on screen interacting I’m glued. Can’t wait to see the confrontation next episode !
and wtf does it mean that he has to doubt naming her heir? why is that wrong? the wrong thing is not rescinding right fucking now instead of waiting to die and leave a clusterfuck behind
This episode was awesome. I love seeing the vultures circle Viserys. They know/think he's so weak and easily manipulated. I loved seeing him stand up to some of them yet dealing with his own internal struggle. If only he gave Rhaeneyra the passionate speech about her being the heir.
He's named her Heir to the throne and has given her talks in the first 2 episodes. He even tells her she wont be replaced. Also he let's her pick her own husband... Viserys has kinda spoiled her if you ask me.
I know everyone is talking about "Matt Daemon" and how he rocks the show. Which is true, he's awesome! But I have to say that Paddy Considine's portrayal of Viserys is damn near perfect! I really enjoy the show so far, dragon scenes were badass, the fighting sequence in the end amazing and its just exciting and fun to watch! Kingsguards armor looks perfect btw...
Paddy Considine is the MVP actor in this season; he's been the anchor, in actions and feelings and all the consequences his choices have caused. It was a fairly thankless role that he imbued with humanity and credibility. He deserves an Emmy in my opinion.
@@TihetrisWeathersby depends on your space I only have a small room however I’m very into tech like that have the maxed out Sonos system with w 2 sub gen 3s
What I loved the most about the episode was seeing Daemon ride Caraxes, and seeing him fight as a warlock in the battle of the stone steps, in fact, it reminded me of Geralt of Rivia.
Ok so that was the Queen who never was’s son and his dragon? Who’s name is sea smoke? Awesome looking dragon, same breed as Drogon from what it appeared
@@kennethgiorgi7178 We all know that. But I meant he doesn't have the Targaryen name. Which is something new. Dany, Rhaenyra, Daemon, Jon(Aegon) all riders we have seen so far has a Targaryen name.
@@thiagobarbosa7905 the reality he is in is the growth of house hightower , selfish causes alicent doesn't wanna replace Rhaenyra bt he will make her do it and therefore condemn her and her sons to a terrible fate
Such an amazing episode man. Seeing him walk out of the cave with half of crabfeeder 🦀 was badarse. Can't wait to see what the rest of the season has is store for Daemon.
I love the show-don’t-tell style that the show is going for like with Viserys’ missing fingers in this episode due to the rot mentioned in previous episodes. A good metaphor for slowly breaking down due to the stress of the crown and matter of succession
Daemon might be a complicated character but we've seen him more as a charismatic bad*ss in this show. I think this series is showing more about how complex Viserys, Rhaenyra, and Alicent really are. I really enjoyed that scene between Alicent and her father. We finally got to hear what's really her inner thoughts and feelings. I believe Alicent will be just as complex as Rhaenyra as the series progresses. Because I actually think she has a good heart. She's practically a Targaryen since she grew up next to them. I believe Alicent really does love Viserys and still deeply cares about Rhaenyra. But then she wants to also please her father. It's a tough balancing act for her while still being a mother while loving and supporting her children. By making Alicent more likeable, it can make us torn when she and Rhaenyra become bitter rivals. It's really a terrific show so far. I thought maybe the battle scene at the end would piss off book fans who preferred earlier seasons of GOT that was slow-burning and thought it got too Hollywood blockbuster by S4. But I guess not because they seem to love it. Didn't bother them. One of the greatest shows I have ever seen with great character development is still Mad Men. I think HOT D is reaching their level. For me, the dragon scenes are cool but I'd rather have great character development and this series has at least 4 characters with so many layers. I don't mind the quieter scenes like Rhaenyra talking to her father or Criston or Alicent talking to Viserys or her father. Those are the scenes that makes GOT/HOT D great. The dragons and battle scenes are the superficial stuff.
I agree Alicent is as complex as Rhaenyra although she is her opposite in manner and personality. While I think that Alicent does care about Viserys and Rhaenyra but to what extent, I'm still conflicted on that. What the episode shows me is a young woman so attuned with the court, who's so good at politicking. She gently moved Viserys to do things for her, without pushing him to do so. The 'assist' she suggested for the Step Stones, worked as a slight toward Daemon and worked to elevate her reputation of kindness in front of her husband. ::Chef's kiss:: She knew also when to gently wield her position against Rhaenyra (in private), reminding her that she is indeed queen, since Rhaenyra has been acting very rebellious/abrasive. But in public, Alicent shows unity and generosity when she defends Rhaenyra amongst the court ladies. I was so just impressed by her. I was half-expecting, Cersei 2.0, a subtle as a dump truck LOL, honestly after reading the novel, but the show made her more complex than that. She moves the pieces gently and subtly. She proves to be a very effective game player indeed at a very young age.
Daemon makes this series. He’s a mix of Ramsey’s ruthlessness, Jaime & Jon’s fighting styles and Jaime’s swag. Can’t wait for the episodes to come!!!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Fantastic episode, I really really REALLY loved everything about it! Keep it up guys. My main criticisms so far is the pretty weak and underwhelming action so far (especially in terms of the way it's shot and edited), and the enormous time skips. I can understand the time skips, but I expect better from the action side of things at least... Otherwise, it's been an absolute joy each week
By far the best episode. After watching Game of thrones today and Geoffry telling me what happened to Rheanyra in the end I was pissed. But still I want to see why and how it happened. This was the best episode of the 3 so far
Theres also literally a whole animated story on youtube on fire and blood narrated by Joeffrey, Robert Baratheon and Viserys. The videos are like 5 years old so most of people have the spoilers from there since nobody knew they were gonna make this show back then
Yeah it's sorta funny, even the book this show is based on is just history and lore so there's a lot about what's gonna happen that wasn't considered spoilers at all. It's really exciting though being familiar with the source material to see what they do with it. Very unique sort of adaptation and they've surpassed my expectations so far by quite a bit
OMG, I'm currently re-watching GoT and watched that episode with Joffrey and Margeary yesterday. Was so upset I spoiled myself about rhaenyra!! 😩 I had never registered that part when I fist saw GoT. I'm so mad lol
I really like that with everything else going on (dragons, royal dramas, war) at the heart of this episode is a single dad having trouble connecting with his teenage daughter. I also like that Viserys really loves his daughter and wants her to be happy, but he knows royal traditions wont allow it.
The Targaryens are eating away at one another more and more with every timeskip and it's handled so well! It'll only get more stressful as more time passes, I'm scared but excited for their story at the same time
That last fight though... "uuuuuh we will put him in an impossible situation on purpose to really show how little we care about realism, so that war scenes will be easier to write"
Once again, HBO has proven how unbelievably good they are with the casting. Starting from the costimography (have to point out Steve Toussaint as Corlys Valeryon) to the portrayal itself, every character is dripping with personality. While I was quite worried of having a well-known actor, like Matt Smith, taking me out of the show, his portrayal of Daemon has done quite the opposite and immersed me in the show just that bit more. As much praise this is for the actors, it's even more so for the casting crew who felt that connection.
I loved Alicent in this episode! You could see her trying to reapproach Rhaenyra many times. Alicent is clearly in a difficult position - a place her father led her to - and felt deeply the loss of her friend. Of course, I don't blame Rhaenyra for acting and feeling the way she is 🤷♀️ It would be perfect if Rhaenyra and Alicent could be a couple and live happily ever after 😭
For me she was the least likable character. She may had sympathy but still did what is good for her family only. This type of people can kill you and then say they are sorry, may be have a little cry for you.
In the books, Daemon beat the messenger that brought him the news of Viserys' marriage almost to death. Here, they changed it and put the scene in the Stepstones to show his frustration with his brother.
@@PozoBlue Because Daemons men had already suffered so many losses, and it had been a couple of years. So for the king to only now send a measly number of ships to the cause was kind of pointless. Note how when Daemon walks along the bay after this scene, he makes sure to look down at all the lost men? That's basically telling us that if Viserys had sent troops earlier, all of this death probably wouldn't have happened, or certainly wouldn't have been as bad as it is.
Viserys says in private to Rhaenyra she won't be replaced as heir, but that's not enough. He needs to say it publicly, so the lords can swear fealty again to set aside any doubt of succession.
Rhaenyra says in the wagon on the way to the hunt that she hates the sound the boars make when they're stuck, then she knifes one to death herself. That's an important character moment because she's learning about herself and that she'll do what she finds distasteful if provoked.

you're saying the war didn't go to plan, but what exactly was the plan? in what scenario can a couple of grown dragons not win this war within a couple of days?
Guerrilla tactics. Even Aegon the conqueror couldn’t conquer dorne with his sisters, and he had balerion, and lost one of his sisters and her dragon. All because of dorne simply hiding then appear to attack then escape. Same with these guys hiding in the caves Dragons are not always the solution.
