Alicent > Rhaenyra, if you compare their lives it’s hard not to feel bad for Alicent. She was forced to marry a man she didn’t love while watching her best friend live life freely, while also lying and expecting others to accept it with no questions asked, anyone would snap.
This is one of my favorite episodes hands down of how everyone was sort of terrible on my girl laenas funeral lol , everyone misses the hint of the reason Dameon laughed was because vaemond lord Corlys brother who was doing the speech was acting shitty to use his dead nieces speech to talk shit about rhaenrya of how their blood is true and deep which is why you see her get uncomfortable which was so messed up for him to do that so daemon was the only one to do something about it by taking the heat of her, alicent and Criston was so obsessed with rhaenrya that they was gawking at her the entire time, I get why Aemond did what he did but he was selfish to use the opportunity on laenas funeral to claim granny vhagar when he was supposed be in bed, he was also wrong for treating the girls like that when they did nothing to him and their feelings are valid since they are children who in their minds thought he stole the only last living thing that was connected to their mom so in a way he did take vhagar from them even though you can’t inherit a dragon but come on like rhaena was grieving their mom who just died so of course she wasn’t trying to claim vhagar right now which is fair but weird people tend to hate those girls which is hella weird, I don’t blame baby luke for protecting his big brother who literally heard their big uncle threatened to kill them or said they will die just like their father which is dark and messed up , no Aemond did not deserve losing his eye but he was talking all that crap and should’ve known better , all the kids were in the wrong of the sort but it got out of hand and I blame the adults who failed to watch them like the guards or criston for some odd reason who never got punished or questioned, I get both mothers but alicent wanted to take another eye from a beat up child that wasn’t going to solve anything so viserys shut her down when she should’ve heard out all the children then asked for a reasonable punishment for all the children , rhaenrya was protecting her children just as alicent was so for people to think rhaenrya was gonna let alicent hurt her children is dulu , alicent was just as in the wrong as she claims rhaenrya was cause let’s not forget alicent literally slapped her son aegon in front of everyone who didn’t deserve even if he is terrible but that’s not ok nor funny cause he didn’t deserve that when he’s not aemonds babysitter and he was where he was supposed be and not his little brother but she blamed him , then she knew the consequences of spreading the rumors that could’ve gotten rhae and her boys killed and was yapping off at the mouth when the king told her many times to stop but didn’t and she kept quiet knowing it all traced back to her so her kids had to pay for it then she and Aemond got on a bandwagon to let her oldest son get thrown under the bus for her mouth! Alicent blames rhaenrya for doing her duty and following the rules instead of blaming the men who put her in this position , I get alicent’s fustration at the king cause viserys literally failed his whole family one by one and just kept sweeping things under the rug when it’s clear the house is divided all because of him and Otto, i would’ve popped the Lucious curls outta alicent if she lunged at my child with a dagger cause it didn’t even look like she was trying to slice him but stab which is even worst then she slices the heir which some said if she would’ve cut rhaenrya near the artery then it would’ve been game over but she never faced the consequences , alicent is a hypocrite with the speech but wanted to keep blaming rhaenrya for the problems that has nothing to do with her , everyone in this show is spoiled , entitled, high noble or royalty people so for people to say rhaenrya is all of those are just nick picking because we are literally watching monarchy and duh she’s a princess lmao rhaenrya and Laenor tried and we can’t say they could’ve tried harder by doing something different if we aren’t in their shoes cause it seems that laenor is infertile and bringing another stranger into the mix would be too risky for rhaenrya but yet she still gets blamed by everyone when everyone knew he was gay including his parents! I find myself disagreeing with all this. First of: Aemond was the wronged child of his family. Always disregarded by his father and bullied by his brother and nephews. Viserys the father of the year never made Rhaenyra or her abusive sons face any form of consequence for their actions. Aemond was the only one of the children to not receive a dragon egg at birth, so he had to claim one (bond with one) if he really wanted to be a dragon rider. And such he did. Vhagar bonded with him. Vhagar chose him. If she hadn't, she would've just burned him, cause that's how it works. If Laena had chances to try and bond with her before and didn't take them, that's on her. Not Aemond. Secondly: Aemond did not start the fight, the Velaryon did. Aemond had all the right to defend himself in a 4 vs 1 situation (fair right?), regardless of his opponents' gender. Let's stop normalizing women hitting men being "oh so cool" and men hitting women being "oh my the blasphemy". He lost his eye cause one of them brought a knife to a fight and he only used a rock and his fists to defend himself. And yet with all that being said, Rhaenyra and her b.... got away with it!!! I'm glad I am seeing more neutral leading fans that you can actually have a conversation about the show without being attacked. It was insane to me when I first watched and saw people saying Aemond was the aggressor when he was the one who was attacked. He picked up a rock while he was lying on the ground with them beating him up and the only time he used it was only AFER Jace tried to slash him with a knife. Also funny how, how a lot of TB say they are progressive yet excuse violence is done on men, because it was Rhaena and Baela who started physical violence first.

That’s why there are two different opinions about the scenario in this video. I literally stated, “well they did bully him, so it makes sense.” And he actually started the fight by antagonizing the girls with the taking of Vhagar… they just swung first 😂

But Aemond led with a clear insult to one of Daemon's daughters (I think it was Rhaena); inferring that she was suited to have a pig. Westerosi nobility frowns on insults to their young ladies, and it would be considered doubly offensive to do so to a little girl who had just lost her mother. Plus, the girls were Aemond's cousins; he hadn't even managed to give them personal condolences over their mother's loss, but he goes for her dragon without even the courtesy of asking (or having his father, the king, ask). Technically, Aemond did not have a 'right' to try to claim any dragon because he is a child, not a man; so it would be his father who would decide whether Aemond could try to claim Vhagar. But the most guilt for the fight falls on all the adults who failed these children - Aemond's mother who dripped contempt for Rhaenyra's sons and their bastardy, Aemond's father who did nothing to stop him being teased and humiliated (mostly by his own brother, Aegon, who led the younger boys), Rhaena & Baela's father who should have been looking after his bereaved and upset daughters so soon after their mother's death (rather than having sex with Rhaenyra on the beach), Rhaenyra who should also have kept a closer eye on her children (instead of fooling around with the supposedly bereaved Daemon), and all the adults who should have been responsible for watching the kids - why didn't Corlys and Rhaenys have guards posted outside the girls' door, or arrange for female attendants? What if one or more of the kids decided to take a swim and was carried away by a wave or a tide and drowned, late at night, or even a walk on the rocks overlooking the sea, at night, tripped and fell into the water and drowned? Jace and Luke had seen their supposed father Laenor standing in the water at the funeral, the sight could have aroused their curiosity or anger and triggered a need to explore the shallows (only at night, it would have been harder to maintain safety)...

You just don't say such a thing to a little girl whose mother's funeral occurred less than 24 hours ago (a funeral that Aemond attended). Rhaena and Baela had never done anything to Aemond, he had no prior grudge against them. And Aemond should have known, he's the son of the King of Westeros, he would have been taught good manners. Aemond was puffed up with pride at having claimed Vhagar, and Daemon's daughters wounded that pride, so he came out with the "pig" insult (which was worse, in terms of insults, especially since it was aimed at a girl growing up in a patriarchal society, it implied that Rhaena was either as slovenly or as unattractive as a pig). He was slightly older than the girls, I believe; he could have tried to speak politely and just remind Rhaena that dragons are not property and that he had had no knowledge that she intended to claim Vhagar.
The comment that said all rhaenyra kids that she could have with daemon isn’t legitimate is wrong simply because they did a Valyrian wedding which allows them to have more than one spouse…Aegon married both of his sisters the same way. Aemond specifically went out late while the girls was mourning to claim the dragon before daemon daughter could smh even his actor and the writer said what he did was dirty and the actor said aemond felt more powerful after gaining a dragon so that’s why he came at them the way he did.

lol im so happy you guys arent loving daemon. I love him as a character but i hate him as a person and cringe every time i see him with the niece he groomed from 14, despite that a lot of people seem to have a blind spot for daemon because of his chin or something 😂 . Also i cant help but root for Aemond this episode, its his only chance to get a dragon while hes on dragonstone and dragons are only claimable by action not inheritance. also in the 4v1 they are already basically childhood enemies and they come up on him and swing first. then when he gets the upper hand with the rock he doesn't hit the dude just calls them bastards (which they are) and gets his eye cut out. he really doesn't deserve that in this scenario imo. and then he gets literally no justice from his dad because Rhaenyra is the favourite child, Viserys has a trial for who is spreading "lies" about the kids. If anyone else had cut a prince they would've probably been killed so just tell everyone to get along is insane. Alicent flies off the handle for sure but i totally understand the frustration thats been building up for a decade

For the grooming you can tell in their earliest scenes together that he flirts with and lavishes gifts on Rhaenyra when shes around 13 or smt, and then around ep 4 when daemon is trying to secure his place on the throne by despoiling Rhaenyra in a public space so no one will marry her and Viserys is forced to marry them together. Shes like max 16 at that point and then Daemon leaves for a while to kill his wife and when they meet up again Rhaenyra confesses that shes been thinking about him the whole time (because she was groomed). For the kid fight, fair enough the girls had no previous beef with Aemon but they are close with the Strong boys so you can imagine the childhood rivalry spreads
Everytime I rewatch Driftmark I feel it's hard to appreciate just how brilliantly shakesperean the dagger scene is without putting into context the mirrored lives of the princess and the queen that has played out for the better part of the season. From mirroring the two contrasting fathers : "she'll obey as you command" vs "I want her to be happy", to the mirroring of the boar hunt vis a vis 'being trapped in the castle and churn out heirs' as Rhaenrya once said, to the mirroring of the depressing sex scene in the fourth episode. "Forever upholding the kingdom, the family, the law..." it's a lifetime of suffering and being slighted boiling over into this climactic moment. Excellent acting by Olivia. Meanwhile Criston contekmplating regicide everytime he stares daggers at Viserys is my favorite subtext of the season. That's How a Father That Stepped Up Looks At A Deadbeat Dad 😭. The "holy mother" as the saving grace of the "soiled knight".
For Alicent to brandish a knife and attack the King's daughter, his declared heir, was very wrong. For her to demand the eye of a child was just as wrong as that child slashing out Aemond's eye; but Alicent didn't have the excuse of being a scared eight-year-old who in the middle of a fight that verged on deadly (Aemond lifting the rock). If Viserys had managed the aftermath better, Alicent might not have felt quite as helpless and enraged. Viserys did not even try to show sympathy for his young son, and he didn't chastise Rhaenyra for the notion of 'sharply questioning' Aemond ('sharply question' is a euphemism for torture) to find where he heard that Rhaenyra's sons were bastards. Viserys should have had each child gently but firmly questioned individually about what happened, perhaps by the Commander of the Kingsguard, and then he should have decided, as head of House Targaryen, on punishments and apologies - both of which were called for. (though the punishments for the children should not have involved torture or mutilation or death, etc., and Aemond should not be punished since he has already been punished enough; and all the children owed apologies)

This is the moment when the old order crumbles into dust. When the real heir looks at his father's face and calmly tells him we know. everyone knows. The sons will remember. You can turn the world upside down to absolve your "only child" from consequences. But you cannot out run the sins of the father. Accountability will have to be learned one way or the other.
