I love that they are keeping that catspaw dagger as a prominent prop for the story. I would love to read it's origin story. It was passed down from Aenar (the one who left Valyria just before the doom) and found it's way to Aegon the Conqueror who had the premonition of the fight with the Night King. I'm guessing someone told him the story of "The Song of Ice and Fire" and he was convinced he was the prince who was promised. (But it was Jon Snow)
She is for sure but Aegon being dead/maimed and Sunfyre basically dead/handicapped is a huge loss as well. The greens lost so much for a castle that isn’t all that important.
Aegon actually being eager to fight in the battle field without experience shows he is in no way like joffrey, he's just desperate for attention from his mother and everyone else, now more than ever. Also, sunfyre and his bond is just so beautiful 😭 thats his best boy
@@zawa7497 100% I feel like thrones fans want another joffrey to hate but that character really isn't Aegon. For all his faults nobody can ever accuse Aegon of being a coward.
@@zawa7497Funny enough that "joffrey" type of character is actually cole. I Found alicent kinda annoying in their conversation. Girl you put him on a throne he didn't want with no preparation how did you think it was gonna turn out
Aegon got more affection from that headbob from Sunfyre than he ever got from either of his parents. The smile he had on his face when Sunfyre gave him that headbob shows everything.
@@gailf1617 I wish I would have seen that, too. It looked like Sunfyre really loved him, and he really loved Sunfyre. He should have taken his dragon and just left this sh!hole and live happily somewhere else
It's such a great subversion. Daemon is the first to fly out for war and now he ends up stuck fighting hallucinations while everyone else is putting in work on the battlefield.
The way Meleys looked back at Rhaenys as she died. Also, Aegon barely being able to speak Valyrian was hilarious, perfectly exemplifying his lack of work ethic.
I knew what was coming for Rhaenys and Meleys so I was immediately in tears the second Rhaenys rested her forehead on Meleys before leaving for battle. Such beautiful acting by Eve Best and they animated Meleys perfectly to match Eve's acting choices. Meleys and Rhaenys have been together for over 40 years, and they captured their bond so beautifully. That look Meleys gives Rhaenys as she's dying was SO devastating. I will miss them both so much
@@madelinegarber7860 she absolutely COULD have gotten away. She had the fastest dragon. That being said if she retreated to dragonstone Vhagar likely just follows her and gets a easy shot at killing the dragons on dragonstone
@@Splishy27 that’s fair. Though I thoght initially that she was leaving. Also the opportunity to rid the greens of their biggest dragon was too good to miss. She quite literally went out in a blaze of glory.
Imagine if she just cooked the Greens while she had the chance. Rhaenyra would be sitting on the throne and Lucerys would be alive. And then in episode 01 of this season, she refuses to ride with Daemon to kill Vhagar. And now she dies because of it. Rhaenys might be the dumbest character on the show.
These dragon deaths are going to destroy me. The way Meleys and Rhaenys look at each other at the end 😭 Also Sunfyre doing everything in his ability to try and protect Aegon. He tried to shield Aegon from the fire, then turn his body while falling so he didn’t land on his back, and curling himself around Aegon on the ground.
What breaks my heart is the resignation in Rhaenys' voice when she tells Meleys to attack. She was the loudest advocate for peace and yet she was the first to volunteer. A true Targaryen who died an honorable dragon rider's death.
It's been suggested that Rhaenys was somewhat sui*idal because, on top of losing her two kids and a 'grandson', she just found out that Corlys cheated on her and has a illegitimate son. At that point, it's possible that Rhaenys couldn't take the pain of heartbreak and betrayal anymore. But wanted to die in a way that would be considered honorable and worthy of the Targaryen name.
@quanchi3723 it was painful to watch. I was angry when she turned and said, "Attack Maelys" I'm saying no just fly away, hide, it's not worth doing more, just get your dragon out of there. P,ut her life above it all! Then bam, they were at the mercy 🥺 of Vegar and Aemond 😪
Nahh, she shouldn't have been queen. She killed thousands of small folk for no reason because she then didn't kill Aegon at his Coronation. She rocked but the small folk send their regards
@@kittylemeu1373 She wouldn't have killed any smallfolk if the Greens hadn't held her hostage in King's Landing and then held a rushed coronation right above where all the living weapons of mass destruction lived.
@@melissagreye8445 she could have left the normal way? Not through the ground killing thousands of peasants? She's worm food now so we'll never know how good a ruler she would've been
The shot of the boiling hot dragon blood falling onto the soldiers and coating them in their armour was really a nice touch. Not only does it reinforce how magical these beasts truly are but it also shows how the common men fighting on the ground are always caught in the crossfire when these hubristic Gods fight.
Rhaenys is still grieving the loss of two children. Plus, the betrayal of her husband. With all this, she still did her duty. Such a great character, she'll be missed.
She came off as knowing about that and being long over it. He's a sailor, she knows what young sailors are like and doesn't seem to hold it against him.
@@fantasiazplatkamiVhagar is the biggest threat to TB. After the Dragonpit event, she likely felt a sense of duty to stay and do what she could to protect her family and side.
@@ViHa-yh4ed actually meleys was a very fast dragon if not the fastest so she could’ve outrun vhagar cause she also very old the point being I knew Rhaenys would’ve never run from that fight
Losing Rhaenys is devastating both in the story and the show as a whole. Eve Best was one of the greatest parts of this show and I'm truly gonna miss her.
Meleys is considered one of the swiftest dragons alive, she could of easily fled from Vhagar --- "Princess Rhaenys made no attempt to flee. With a glad cry and a crack of her whip, she turned Meleys toward the foe" "Beloved daughter of Lady Jocelyn Baratheon and Prince Aemon Targaryen, faithful wife to Lord Corlys Velaryon, mother and grandmother, the Queen Who Never Was lived fearlessly, and died amidst blood and fire..."
These dragons killing each other is more heartbreaking than the humans. Poor Arrax, Meleys, Sunfyre not you Vhagar, she can retire frfr. RIP to the Queen Who Never Was, you're bravery will be remembered.
He actually did it pretty intelligently. Sunfyre is getting torn to shreds by Meleys so the only way Aegon could be saved is aggressive intervention from another dragon which is exactly what Aemond did. So he can pitch it as would you rather Aegon be dead or wounded?
Alicent "do you think simply wearing the crown imbues you with wisdom?" Did YOU think crowning him would make him responsible?? She spent his whole life forcing him to be heir but didn't bother even once to instruct him He didn't want to challenge Rhaenyra, he wanted to leave, he lost his son, he asked your advice, he was listening the council 90% of the time except ratcatchers - and now after 5 minutes of talking with you he starts drinking and leaves for suicide mission. Damn, I feel bad for Aegon.
She gave him council, sit back and let the smart people take command, he couldnt even do that. I swear to god, people are looking for reason to hate Alicent (yeah shes a bad mother)
@@MrBuzzcake A few days after his son is murdered, she basically tells him he's worthless. That's not her offering council in good faith, that's her taking out her anger/frustration on Aegon.
@@MrBuzzcake I was defending Alicent for 2 years during the break, it's not my fault the writing of her character is do bad that she stopped making sense. She knew his son died a few days ago and he wanted to prove himself. Telling him " do what's is expected from you : nothing" was super harsh and even the reactors were shocked. She didn't do anything except complaining or betraying him ( let Rhaenyra leave). Not once she suggested how to win the war or make peace. I'm not even mad at Alicent but at writers, she was different till episode 8
I just find it insane people compare Aegon with Joffrey, like yeah Aegon isn't worthy and a piece of shit, but man he is better than Joffrey in every sense. And dude atleast has balls and can fight.
Joffrey wasn't a coward, was a vicious and cruel kiddo but had the strenght to rule, the problem was his granpa Tywin, is a problem that Aegon and Joffrey share. For example Tommen was eaten and forced to the suicide by the same religious that Maegor burned like 400 years ago...
Then why does he suck at riding him so badly that TGC seemed like mad they made him have to be so bad. It’s a weird switch because the only reason they bullied Aemond is because the other 3 boys had dragons so they bonded over dragons and aemond was just tagging along to their lessons but apparently Aegon didn’t learn how to ride a dragon properly yet riding white often in the books. I’m not a greens fan in any way but I think they did this to further make Aemond look like the actual Targaryen because they’ve been painting Aegon as Viserys and Aemond as Daemon so they couldn’t have Aegon be better at it than Aemond despite him having the largest dragon and being smarter and the superior warrior. Not the mention luckier… I’m sure the ‘Aemond wives ‘ will be thrilled and blame his sucky skills on Rhaenyra
@@Zarab923I think Aegon legitimately never expected to take a dragon to war bc he grew up in a time of peace when he was a kid. He just never thought it’d ever get to this point. Aemond wasn’t an heir so he knew he needed to prove himself (esp after taking Vhagar) as a dragon rider. Aegon never took anything seriously and they just let him be that way growing up and then they’re shocked he doesn’t know how to do anything.
Me for 8 seasons of GoT and one season of HOTD: man I can't wait to see a dragon battle, this is gonna be sick! Me 5 seconds into an actual dragon battle: I don't like this, make them stop!

Littlefinger didn't have a satisfying death. The writing had gotten so bad by that point and LF was turned so stupid that there was no satisfaction from his death.
Its important to know that when Rhaenys said it was their biggest dragon she meant available right now, Caraxes (Daemons Dragon) is slightly bigger than Melys but hes off at Harenhall having crazy visions.
Caraxes is flying spaghetti noodle though so probably breaks even with Melys when strengths and weaknesses are assessed. But I think they needed both to take down Vhagar in a 2:1.
Vermithor is the next biggest dragon to Vhagar. Vermithor was the dragon Daemon was singing to last season. He was King Jaehaerys dragon and is currently unclaimed/riderless. @trottheblackdog I think it's sad. They have these incredible creatures, and they use them for war and total destruction, which in the end don't the dragons become extinct? And so does the full/pure blooded Targaryen family line once Jon Snow (half-blooded Targaryen) kills Daenerys?
That's exactly the reason... experience. Vhagar is ancient, and killed countless dragons. Look at large birds of prey, they often attack by surprise, even on smaller prey.
@@GreenFalcon926 exactly! Meleys had a good shot at atleast disabling Vhagar, but considering she'd just been grappling with Sunfyre and got caught unaware by Vhagar the first time it is no surprise this happened. Alicemt did NOT have any patience with Aegon with episode after firing Otto and her cramping after the tea. Though I find it funny how she & Otto are responisble for not preparing Aegon for the throne at all but still wanting him on it. They didn't care about him actually being king, they just wanted his butt to warm it while they rule.
@@Ashbrash1998 Otto and Alicent are the most dangerous people to the Targarean family. Otto using his daughter Alicent for his own needs and greed for power. The Dance is a tragedy, especially for the dragon's. Caraxes and Vhagar have a deep and closely nit history. Vhagar and Caraxes were ridden together by brothers, then lovers, then enemies.
It was sad to see Rhaenys and her Meleys die, but it was clear that she knew this was a kamikaze mission. THIS is the "Dance of Dragons" of prophecy. She watched (and advised) Rhaenyra do EVERYTHING to avoid it. But when Rhae came back, Rhaenys knew it was on. Hers was the only war dragon present and she did not want her granddaughter to be the one to start the "Dance". The point of this whole thing is that war sucks. Everybody loses - even the winner.
She thought she likely would die, but in no way did she think it was a kamikaze mission. 30 seconds before she and Meyles took Vhagar down and likely would have won if not for Vhagar being crazy stealthy for some reason
My thoughts: Rhaeny’s had to protect that castle at all costs because of the strategic location it holds thus the Queen’s decision to send their strongest piece available in absence of Daemon. If Cole controlled it means they would have (correct me if I’m wrong) Dragonstone surrounded, strengthening Green’s position and weakining Black’s; possible checkmate scenario. If she fled, she would have lost the castle plus her chance of killing Aemond/Vhagar and Cole (removing the 2 strongest pieces on the board). From chess standpoint, it was a calculated risky move but considering the options, I would have taken it since the payoff is ending Cole and Aemond in one move and ending the war.
The castle holds little strategic value, Rhaenyra even does a double take when they discuss it at the council. She died there simply because the story is written that way (you could argue that she thought she was done for or that she thought she could take out Vheagar)
Another thing: Rhaenyra sending a dragon was necessary. Assuming Aemond was not there, a dragon from the Black's could have secured the castle almost effortlessly. Not only that, but this was a pivotal moment to show the rest of Rhaenyra's supporters, declared or indecisive, that she will back them up. If the support was not there, neither would morale, and that would make the rest of the realm bend the knee to the Greens so much more easily. Rhaenys knew she had to fully commit to this effort. The moment she saw Sunfire, she knew she had to end its rider and destroy as much as Cole's forces as possible before leaving. Then, seeing Aemond and Vhagar, she realized that there was no leaving this fight. This was her final stand.
@MrBuzzcake I don't think it's stupid. Rook's castle (or whatever it's called) is small and easily vulnerable to seige by Cole's army alone. I don't think it's wise to send one of Green's dragons when the army can win already. Not to mention, specifically, Vhagar being there would be so out of question to the Black's. Vhagar out of King's Landing would leave Aegon vulnerable as well as the rest of the Royal family, the council, and many lords who support and aid the war effort in King Aegon's name. Not to mention, it's the capital of the realm. Conquering King's Landing, the Green's home base, is essentially winning the war for the Black's. You'd have control of their smith's, trade routes, laborers, and you'd have many lords at your mercy. It is not stupid to assume Vhagar should not be with Cole's army, considering all they could lose. It just so happened that Aemond considered that risk trade off and still went with it. This was to mitigate army losses. Baiting one of Black's dragons is just a possibility after that. One, heavily in the Green's favor, but if Vhagar had come out mortally wounded, then war over. Aemond and Cole banked off the probabilities. They happened to win. Though we do not know the extent to which Vhagar is hurt because of this fight. One final thought. If you're going to go about this war, you'd have to assume around every corner and every moment that you wish to go about, Vhagar will be there to combat you. We agree on that. But just because there is always the possibility of Vhagar being there, that doesn't mean you allow her and her rider to paralyze you from participating in this war effort.
One thing to note about Coles plan is that he wasn’t sacrificing many of his own men. The very first wave that were sent out as cannon fodder were all sporting the sigils of the other houses he had added to his ranks. There were at least enough Targaryen forces at the end there to rally behind Gwayne to continue assaulting the castle.
Meleys looking at Rhaenys as she s dying absolutely killed me. So devasted about the turn of events in this episode even though we knew it was just a matter of time. ughhh really liked her!!
That guy who saved Corly's life, who Rhaenys was acting all weird about, that's Corlys' bastard son. That's why she said "your mother must have been beautiful" so sorrowfully.
It’s specially heartbreaking when you know the lore behind Meleys and Vhagar… their previous riders were Baelon and Alyssa Targaryen, parents of Viserys and Daemon Targaryen. They were “inseparable” and whenever they weren’t in the bedroom they were in the skies flying. So they spent YEARS together to only end up going against each other in the end.
Steven's facial expressions as the dragon's claws tear into the other dragon's is EXACTLY everyone else's reaction. OH... SHIT... it's hard to watch, so visceral.
23:35 I‘m sorry how is he supposed to take that as a learning experience? It’s his own mother basically saying "You‘re a useless piece of shit.“ This is literally why he is the way he is.
It’s true he is so neglected both by his father and his mother shows no emotional support ever, i know she loves her kids but she’s still not there for them, only ever has been for Aemond and he’s still a shitbag. (Talking bout the sons and not Heleana cuz i love her and Alicent has actually shown her much support)
em, just sit there and listen? Ask questions? I mean this is war, there is a lot to be learned from the most experienced politicians and strategists in the realm. Instead he just constantly whines that nobody consults him on matters he doesn't know the first thing about, and throws temper tantrums at people who are actually trying to do their job and keep his sorry ass on that throne he has no right for.
The most constructive criticism is usually going to seem harsh, especially if true. You can take it as “you’re a useless piece of shit” or your can take it as “you’re young and you have a group of people here to support you who have lots of experience, use it”. Aegon literally sits there playing with a ball and calls his entire council boring. If he cared he’d be more engaged and willing to learn because he is young and has lots to learn.
Vhagar is the biggest dragon, the second is Vermithor and then the third is Silverwing. Meleys is the fourth biggest and then Caraxes is the fifth largest.
Was waiting for for your reaction and it came so quick! The scene where Meleys turns her head to look at Rhaenys one more time was heartbreaking, I knew it would make Nikki cry. These episodes are getting better and better.

I read the books, still could not watch the dragon fight. I'll try again but when I heard Sunfyre scream in pain, I was out. I did see Rhaenys fall to her death, she was a true Targyrean Queen.
I was like Nikki, I hated seeing the dragons hurt. That's going to be the toughest part about all of this. I loved Rhaenys a lot too and I also felt so bad for Sunfyre too.

Daemon would absolutely kill his brother if he were like aegon. He had no issue killing his own dang wife, and he never even brought it up again lmao. Getting very strong "well you've all been complaining about there not being enough action, destruction and death yet, happy now? Because this is how it's gonna be from now on" vibes from the writers right now. Brilliantly done, pretty sure that by the time the dance is over we'll all have been oversaturated with action, destruction and death, both amongst the dragons in the air and the armies and navies on the ground.
It won't be just that. GOTs was always at its best when they had quiter character building moments that led to the action (which is what was missing from the last 4 seasons). HOTD will have lots of those moments still
@@ben1ben2ben1 Tbh I'm the opposite with this show. The dragon stuff is way more fulfilling to watch than the "quiet character-building" moments, because I don't feel these characters actually have that much going on, unlike with GoT. While I didn't care for the dragons in GoT, unlike here... they have so much more personality. They should go full Birdman and just give us straight-forward action, if the budget can take it

The more the season goes on, I do actually feel a little bad for Aegon. He knew he wouldn’t be a good king. He’s said this since he was a child - everyone else pushed him into ruling. He even tried to run away and they dragged him back…and now they won’t let him actually be king. They ridicule him for being a bad ruler when he’s been saying he’s not cut out to be king for YEARS. He’s not a good person but he’s DEFINITELY not evil the way Joffrey was.
Alyn is: Rhaenys, "Face so comely." "Your mother must of been beautiful," with a pained look. "I know who he is Corlys." "He should be raised up for saving his Lord's life." Alyn is a bastard of house Velaryon. Raised up could mean legitimized as a Velaryon. Based on the pained look Rhaenys had, the father is probably... Corlys has also been mentioning how the various Heirs of Driftmark know nothing of the sea for 2 seasons.
"Please don't be blood" With her talking about Weirwood trees that have 'bloody' sap, that's probably what she gave Daemon to cause such strong hallucinations.
