We had the wooden conduit in my first house before I rewired it, they were used in the 60's for sure! The lath and plaster ceiling almost certainly won't be repaired, I'd just rip the lot down in the cellar. On the outside lights, use a separate PIR rather than the integrated fittings that are generally terrible. LEDVance floods are probably the best 'low' cost LED floods, don't go for LAP etc.

Gonna have to patch up places temporarily, can't afford to sort the ceilings properly right now. The ceiling in the cellar will go when I get a skip in, not looking forward to all the spiders.

Just finished the bathroom video and this appeared, at least things are moving on! Keep the old switches and strip them of paint, they are bakelite and probably plain brown but sometimes a marbled finish, They look great, just feed them with olive oil to darken the colour and protect them, I would try and source some deeper skirting boards, your builder suggested the new style one because easier for him... An old house with original features deserves more, My current house was built around 1870 and my previous house around 1900...Don't mess with the original stuff, it's like gold dust! You will love the dimmer, I fit one in my lounge and bedroom everywhere I live... They become essential after a while, trust me!

I will keep all the old switches (although I won't use them in the house), the vast majority of them are brass, or at least the dimpled cap is. Good shout on the skirting. I don't actually have a builder so I will likely do the skirting boards myself.

I bought a 130 yr old house five years ago. The knob and tube wiring had to be pulled out before the insurance company would give me coverage. While the electricians were at it, I had them replace the main breaker panel. It didn't cost much more to do so, and ensured I had a good, safe starting point for the house. It's nice to get the wiring and plumbing up to some kind of spec., then you can worry about making it pretty afterwards.

Yeah, really looking forward to having a fresh up to spec starting point. The next couple of days are going to have a lot of changes.

Proper wired Ethernet in all the rooms - I approve. Looks like a sizable job you're getting done. It's interesting to see how a job like this gets done in another country. Thanks for bringing us along for the ride.

Not in all the rooms, I had to cut costs, but in a few important ones. Glad you are enjoying it.

I'm absolutely loving these 'rogue' non-electronic videos - brilliant man! Hope you're well pal!

That is all I have until I have a space for nerd stuff. Day 2 and 3 uploading as a double feature now.

It's really interesting to see this all from a customers point of view! Your electrician will be able to put your flood lights on a three position switch so you can have them On/Off/Sensor. Very cool house you have!
@DavidWatts
@DavidWatts 2 года назад
Thanks Carl, most of these videos will not be very technical, just a customer perspective, one with a tiny bit of knowledge, just enough to make me worry and be critical of everything.

The tiles prob didn’t cover the whole floor the carpet just didn’t go to the wall a lot of the time so that was around the edge

Nice old house! Make a nice mancave/studio in the cellar!
@DavidWatts
@DavidWatts 2 года назад
It would be cool to eventually make the cellar into a usable room. I can't fit that into the budget at the moment, well I say budget, I am fairly sure after the plastering is done it may be just bu---t....

@@DavidWatts True, same with my house. 1929... Lovely house but a lot of work and budget...

I dont know if you mentioned it, but Id suggest also installing a weatherproof socket outside and more double sockets in your main lounge..
@DavidWatts
@DavidWatts 2 года назад
I think my main lounge will likely be my nerd room with the PC and my work bench. Any guests can slum it with 3 double sockets and a telly. The is an outdoor double socket going in, the have drilled the hold and run the cables but yet to install the socket.

I have some spare ethernet cable and a spare 5 port gigabit switch i could send to you if you want. I like the wooden conduit. Much nicer than the modern plastic stuff and it is reusable/recyclable. I also think the outside light should be PIR. It could still be switched off when you don't want it coming on.
@DavidWatts
@DavidWatts 2 года назад
Thanks Simon, I should be ok for a switch, I bought one a while back for the nerd room. Not sure if it is gigabit, but I'll test it when everything is done. The outside lights will be PIR, I just want a way to swatch them off when not needed/wanted. So they are sorting me out with a kinetic switch.

Get them to install a neutral to the switches or even Ethernet cable it makes home automation so much easier. Are your new switches going to be a replica of the old ? Would be a shame to ruin that lovely decor.
@DavidWatts
@DavidWatts 2 года назад
Not sure how they are wiring the switches but I will ask about the neutral, probably too late to change things now. But it would be interesting to learn. I won't be reusing the old switches but I will keeping them for a project I can display in the house, I like small touches of original features but I prefer newer style switches and sockets.
