This episode hurt me. You can see House's frustration at the end, that feeling when you do everything you should and still don't get what you need or want. All he want is happiness. That's all anyone wants.

House upset that the psychologist is going through his symptoms to find the core of House's problem, inadvertently hurting him, is very interesting when you remember that House does that with basically ALL his patients. Puts treatments for the surface level theories, patient gets worse, trial and error until he figures it out. He can dish it out, but he sure as hell can't take it.

House has, on multiple occasions, called himself a hypocrite and has said, perhaps not directly, that he is an awful patient. In the favorite episode Three Stories he outright calls himself a moron. Just because he thinks something is how it SHOULD be and what does the MOST good doesn't mean he'd actually go through it himself.

That wasn't the only reason. As another post points out; House was also frustrated. He did everything he was supposed to do - he made sacrifices; he put others first - and ended up even more alone than he was before. The only woman other than Stacy he'd ever loved was about to slip through his fingers for good, Wilson was gone, the members of his original team hated him, and the pain from his medical condition was the worst it had ever been. It seemed to House that nothing he did worked; all his sacrifices, all his suffering gave everything to others while at the same time robbing him of the very things he wanted.
@Kat-xy7fm
@Kat-xy7fm 4 года назад
@@tek512 That's true, but if that was his reason to leave, he would have left at a different point and not hidden the fact that Cuddy was with someone else. He specifically blew up right when he and his therapist were about to address a source of pain for him. He ran away because he couldn't confront it. One of House's biggest psychological issues is that he is constantly afraid that everyone is going to abandon him, and this presents itself in obscene jealousy and constantly "testing" the people he cares about by hurting them to see if they'll abandon him for it. His fear of abandonment is the elephant in the room and the second his therapist tried to talk about it he noped out of there.

What's fantastic is that Andre's character did everything right, and acted the part perfectly. It was still too premature for House to face his ineptitudes against someone as intelligent as him, even if it wasn't the same kind of intelligence. House gave up on himself in this moment, not the therapist. He didn't have the strength yet to escape the cycle that had ruined him for decades.

Well, from what I understand a psychologist's job isn't to make you happy. It's just to get you from negative whatever to point zero and then help you move up from there. “Whatever the answer is, you don’t have it.” In a way, he’s right. The solution to House’s turmoil is within him, and no one else can solve that for him. House’s mistake is assuming there is an ‘answer’ in the first place, since he’s used to solving puzzles, rather than understanding the delicate unraveling of his true feelings. From a therapeutic perspective, there’s just so much going on here that I never noticed initially.

Sadly, this is an all too common issue in therapy. Right when the patient really starts to uncover some heavy trauma, or painful dynamic, or whatever it is that really causes them distress, they run for the hills. Doesn’t mean they can’t try again, or find a measure of healing, but it takes a lot of time, effort, and trust. House lacks the trust part, which is understandable.

It's meant to be a way for YOU to give yourself the answer you want. House's lack of trust in anyone but himself is a clear hinderance, along with his mindset and also horrid actions to others. It's why he's in therapy in the first place and he even aid so himself that he's seeing everyone else have better lives. But rather than reflect on his own actions and want to have that same effect, he lashes out and runs away. @ideologybot4592
@ideologybot4592 3 месяца назад
Not exactly. House is looking for the answer, they just hit on a big part of the answer, and it's clear what it means. House wants Cuddy, and I think that was obvious. So what does he have to do? Either blow up her relationship, the one that's taking the next step, or find a way to come to terms with the fact that he will never be with her. He dislikes either option, because in a way, they both require him to bury his pride and be vulnerable. He would have to be pathetic and he doesn't want to. He's right in the sense that what therapy has done so far is make everyone else happy. Whatever he's done hasn't made him happy, and he's not on a trajectory to be happy. What could the therapist tell him at this point? Let his relationships fall away as everyone else moves on from him? Completely reengineer his personality, becoming the kind of person that knows how to be vulnerable? That would require... faith. A conversion. He doesn't want to change like that. It's much more in line with House's personality to, say, drive a car into someone's dining room. The therapy had done all it could do.

The conclusion of this scene and this episode is so harsh and blunt, the way House suddenly casts his judgment of the psychiatrist before walking away. It isn't mere insults, like calling someone fat or lazy or something juvenile. House makes a much more serious accusation against this man: he accuses him of being a fraud. That's why it is such a punch in the gut. Because on some level, this assessment COULD be true. Perhaps he did suggest that he could help House find happiness without knowing if he could. Perhaps he misled House, in the hopes that his desire might come true eventually, even if there was a chance it might not. Maybe he even had himself fooled into believing he could make House happy, when only House could see the cold, brutal reality of the situation. It is possible and that possibility is sobering. I think deep down he WANTED this therapy to be House's salvation because he genuinely wanted House to be happy, but as a result he couldn't be logical. House needed to believe he could be happy and the psychiatrist needed to believe it too.

The feeling is like no other. True loneliness and we try so hard to give off the vibe that humans are dispensable (just Incase) so that they know our worth... But when they leave, we realize their worth and in the back of our head we didn’t want them to use it against us.

I prefer the earlier seasons when Cuddy and others didn't give House such a hard time about his Vicodin addiction. At least he was functional on Vicodin - he wouldn't be on alcohol. Cuddy breaking up with him because he took Vicodin in a moment of weakness (OMG) really angered me. That seemed so hypocritical of her.
@WiGgYof09
@WiGgYof09 5 лет назад
Not really hypocritical. Its one thing to have a drug addicted friend, its another to have a drug addicted romantic partner that is around your child. House showed a lot of improvement, but in the end when Cuddy needed him he couldn't be there. Maybe he could have done better if given another chance, but what if the next crisis was real? She couldn't take that chance. The real issue is her getting involved in the first place. That was selfish of her. Was selfish of him too, but he's always selfish.

People in the comments think that House either was just frustrated about being unhappy while everyone prospered or that he just ran away because Dr Nolan was about to hit his emotional core. I think its both. Revealing himself to others and having his emotional core exposed is highly uncomfortable for House. And if he feels that he doesn't get any reward for it, he naturally isn't gonna let it happen.

Yeah that's exactly what happens with Cuddy and other people, House can do everything right so at the end not get any reward for it and end up more hurt than at the beginning, literally in the next episode he did everything right to save a patient but still dies anyway

Expecting a Psychiatrist to treat you fully is like asking a meteorologist to make a Weather PREDICTION. Not a forecast. Impossible. People have to accept that there ARE fields of study that are complex and beyond the point of studying. Unlike Math, Science (Hard) or Business. That we have to live with change and planning for the future instead of living in the present is make believe Dr. Nolan did what he could. From the very beginning, he showed that he was human too and can make errors. It's not as if House did not make mistakes. House was not a saint. Because of him, House got his sanity back enough to be out of the facility. Without Dr. Nolan, he would've been in jail earlier than he did. Or worse dead. The Hallucinations of House before the admission WERE real. And Dr. Nolan DID treat it.

iv experienced the exact same thing several times years ago i still suffer from mental illness(s) still am undiagnosed still unhappy and still dont have answers, iv been to several counselors and therapists and it felt so redundant to pour out your soul to someone and do everything you're supposed to bc youre at your final straw of desperation just to get nothing and go no where it's like chasing your own tail or being groomed bc when u realize it and and start to leave theyll say anything to make u stay but no real answers and seeing house (a character who is obviously smarter than me) have the same outcome is validating which is priceless

@birdiewolf3497
@birdiewolf3497 4 года назад
Not to take away from your experience, but that isn't what happened here. I mean look at how much shit the doctor had to go through to get to the truth, and once he gets there House literally nopes his way out of there. He wants to claim that he is walking out because he's not happy, but he wasn't happy yesterday, he wasn't happy the week prior, wasn't happy last month, he wasn't happy five minutes ago, but as soon as the therapist touches a nerve, now the whole thing is bullshit and he is over it. He left because the therapist was actually getting somewhere, and that brings up a lot of negative emotions House has spent so long trying to avoid. I mean a lot of mental illness comes from trying so hard to numb themselves from feeling negative emotions(I mean they still find away to leak out of you). And so therapy becomes confronting all those emotions and that isn't pleasant for anyone and it is especially not gonna be pleasant for people who've spent so long running from it. And House totally fits that category. And for someone has damaged as House and has foster all these negative habits for decades, to unpack all that is gonna take way longer than a year. It took YEARS for him to become the person sitting in the therapist office. And House thinks all that can be unlearned and undone in a year? That is just not realistic at all. House making the point of therapy about his "happiness" also showcases how House is trying to avoid feeling negative emotions. Because happiness is fleeting. Even if therapist gave House happiness, literally anything both in his control and out of his control can come in and fuck that up. And then what? He is back where he started because he did not develop any skills to deal with the negative and he will fall back into his self destructive behaviors. That is the only way he knows how to handle it. Therapy for him would be to first identify these patterns, get him to be comfortable experiencing all the painful crap he wants to avoid, and how to properly manage them in a healthy way. He needs to realize that he isn't happy because of his self destructive behaviors and he has a lot of emotional baggage/trauma that is just sitting there. Sidenote: No shade to House, but just because your friends hit relationship milestones does not mean they are "happy." I mean they really can't be that happy if they are still friends with you. You're not happy if you have someone like House actively involved in your life. You just aren't.

Go see a physician (GP or psychiatrist) for a real diagnosis since you might have other medical problems exacerbating your condition which could explain why psychotherapy didn't help you. Then they will suggest the best treatment available based on the diagnosis. Going to a therapist as soon as you have psychiatric symptoms is like going to a physiotherapist as soon as your leg hurts, it could be a simple torn muscle that requires therapy but can also be a neurological issue, a cancer, a bone density issue, inflammatory conditions, etc. Same with psychiatric symptoms, it could be depression but could also be hypothyroidism, anemia, Vitamins deficiency, inflammatory conditions, etc.

"For a year, I've done everything you ask, and everybody else is happy." So close to figuring it out, yet so far away from understanding it. He's trying to help house build positive relationships and to be supportive of those around him, eventually hoping that it will click that people don't just respect House's mind and diagnostic brilliance, they also like him as a person. Then the other click would be he's envious of the relationships and fulfillment other people are having; House just actively turns his envy into contempt. As ContraPoints once said... "There's an ancient Greek fable where a fox wants some grapes but he can't reach the vine so he walks away bitterly and says 'Well, the grapes are transphobic anyway!'" The actual name of the Aesop fable is "The Fox and the Grapes" and it's where the concept of "sour grapes" comes from. The Fox really wants the grapes he sees on a nearby vine (happy relationships and joy for House) but he struggles to get them and ultimately fails. As a cope, he then tries to convince himself that the grapes weren't any good to begin with and not worth the effort, rather than admit he just failed to get them.
@nuary120896
@nuary120896 Год назад
Can't you blame the fox? If he cannot change his reality, at least he can change his perception of it. House is right in this one, what's the point of making others happy if that doesn't even bring a little bit of joy into his own life.
@hk1371
@hk1371 Год назад
@@nuary120896 The issue, in this case, is that House isn't accepting responsibility for his actions. The fable shows how one can shift reality to make themselves feel better in the short term by looking at the negative emotions. Rather than saying "I cannot reach the grapes because I failed so, if I want the grapes, I need to try a different method", they place blame onto the grapes themselves. With House, he's placing blame not on his own actions but rather the process of becoming better. And, as we've seen and the reason he had to be committed was due to his actions leading his mind into a dark hallucination. We are able to change our reality but its extremely difficult and painful.
@yevgeniyaleshchenko849
@yevgeniyaleshchenko849 5 месяцев назад
@@hk1371 NO, we are not always able to change our reality. I have clinical depression which I can't treat or cure because noone believed me for ages and now I'm too exhausted to even try doing something (which I did, FOR YEARS). Not my fault. Now I have plethora of other complications and resort to off-counter meds to make it subside at least. There is war in my country, noone will pay attention to people like me. No, I don't enjoy suffering, I'm just resigned to it. Then, people who live under constant shelling, in occupied territories, they CAN NOT change their reality. People who are ill with terminal/chronic disease CAN NOT change it. We can NOT change our DNA and often our circumstances. But please, go on and lecture others that they can win over disease, armed invaders, and unforeseen circumstances.
@yevgeniyaleshchenko849
@yevgeniyaleshchenko849 5 месяцев назад
Well, that's the normal defensive mechanism for many people. Why try if it's constantly out of reach? He doesn't have contempt for others, he has contempt for himself, it's obvious. Also, most people know the fable but I'm sure it made your ego sing to lecture strangers on the Internet when noone even asked.

At the end of the day, mental health care can only help so much. It's not going to give you people who care about you, it's not going to make you feel wanted/needed, it's not going to make you happy. It can't give you that. It's just a way to try and overcome the problems you're facing. And at the end, even if you do overcome them, that might be all you get. You could fix every problem you've ever had and still not be happy.

I've been through psychotherapy, and what House hasn't yet learned here is that the transformation must happen within him. It's not a change in the outer world around him, not even in other people. He has to work to arrive at an emotional place where he is comfortable with himself and what he is. Right now he's still too angry and hurt, and cannot face that much of his unhappiness is his own doing (however unintentionally). He has to stop sabotaging himself.
